Does a Handbag Count as Carry-On in India?

Updated: October 19, 2026

A small handbag can qualify as your personal item on flights in India, allowing you to carry it alongside your main cabin bag. However, its weight is not automatically excluded from your cabin allowance. Some airlines provide a separate personal-item allowance, while others count both bags within the same weight limit.

This difference matters when your cabin trolley already weighs 7 kg. Adding a purse, laptop bag or backpack could put you over the allowance—even if the smaller bag fits under the seat. Before packing, check the airline’s rules for weight, dimensions and number of pieces.

Does a Handbag Count as Carry-On in India?

Your handbag is luggage you carry into the cabin, but it may qualify as a personal item rather than use up your main cabin-bag allowance. A compact purse and a large travel tote should not be treated as interchangeable.

The wording can be confusing. An airline may use “hand baggage” or even “handbag” to mean the main carry-on bag. Passengers often use “handbag” to mean a smaller purse. Look for a separate section headed “personal item” or “personal article” in the airline’s policy.

  • Main cabin bag: Your permitted trolley, duffel or backpack, subject to the airline’s cabin-bag limits.
  • Personal item: A qualifying smaller bag, such as a purse or laptop bag, carried under the airline’s additional-item rules.
  • Extra bag: Another separate item beyond the permitted number of pieces. Being small does not automatically make it exempt.

Check three things: How many bags can you carry? What size can each bag be? Is the weight allowance separate or combined?

For more examples, see what counts as a personal item on Indian flights.

Airline Handbag Allowances Compared

The table below covers standard allowances. Purchased upgrades, special assistance, infant items and flights operated by partner airlines may have different conditions.

Airline Main cabin bag Handbag or personal item
Air India One bag: 7 kg in Economy and Premium Economy; 10 kg in Business and First. Maximum 55 × 40 × 20 cm. One additional qualifying personal item up to 3 kg. Listed bag dimensions: 40 × 30 × 20 cm; must fit under the seat.
IndiGo One bag up to 7 kg; maximum 55 × 35 × 25 cm. One additional personal article, such as a purse or small laptop bag, up to 3 kg. Its policy includes duty-free purchases within this personal-article allowance.
Air India Express Standard allowance: 7 kg covering the cabin bag and personal item together. Main bag: 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Personal item up to 40 × 30 × 10 cm, included in the combined weight allowance.
SpiceJet Standard combined cabin allowance: 7 kg. Main bag: 55 × 35 × 25 cm on Boeing aircraft; 50 × 35 × 23 cm on Q400 aircraft. An additional laptop bag or ladies’ purse is permitted, but total cabin-baggage weight must remain within 7 kg.

Official policies: Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express and SpiceJet.

Flying Akasa Air? Its published baggage table lists one hand bag up to 7 kg and 115 cm in total dimensions. Confirm its additional personal-item conditions directly before relying on a separate 3 kg allowance.

Air India and Air India Express have different baggage policies. Check the operating airline on your ticket rather than assuming the same allowance applies to both.

Does the 7 kg Carry-On Limit Include Your Handbag?

It depends on whether your airline uses separate limits or a combined allowance. Permission to carry a second piece does not necessarily give you extra weight.

Example: Separate weight limits

Where the policy permits a 7 kg main bag plus a separate 3 kg personal item, a 7 kg trolley and a qualifying 2 kg purse meet those weight limits. Both bags must also satisfy the relevant size and piece restrictions.

However, an 8 kg trolley and a 2 kg purse do not automatically comply. You cannot assume that separate allowances can be pooled into any combination totalling 10 kg.

Example: Combined weight limit

Where the standard allowance is 7 kg combined, a 5 kg cabin bag and a 2 kg handbag use the full allowance. A 7 kg trolley plus a 2 kg handbag totals 9 kg and exceeds it.

Security rules and airline allowances serve different purposes. Passing security does not confirm that your bags meet the airline’s commercial baggage allowance. There is no universal entitlement to carry 7 kg plus another 3 kg on every Indian airline.

Can You Carry a Backpack, Handbag and Cabin Trolley?

Do not assume that all three are included. Where the allowance is one main cabin bag plus one personal item, a trolley, backpack and separate purse are three pieces.

What you carry What to check
Cabin trolley + small handbag A possible main-bag and personal-item combination, subject to the airline’s limits.
Backpack + purse, with no trolley The backpack can serve as your main cabin bag and the purse as your personal item.
Trolley + backpack + purse Usually exceeds a one-main-bag-plus-one-personal-item allowance. Consolidate before boarding.
Underseat bag + handbag These are still two separate pieces. Check which allowance each uses.
Laptop bag + handbag + trolley A laptop bag is not automatically exempt from the piece limit.

Does a crossbody bag count?

A crossbody bag, sling bag or waist pouch may count as your personal item. Wearing it across your body does not guarantee an exemption from the bag count.

If you already have your permitted bags, leave enough room to put the smaller purse inside one of them. The resulting packed bag must still comply with its size and weight limits.

What Size Handbag Is Allowed?

There is no single personal-item size that applies to every airline in India. Measure the bag after packing, including bulging pockets and protruding parts. For wheeled luggage, include wheels and handles when checking its external size.

A shop’s “cabin approved” label does not guarantee acceptance on your flight. Check the actual measurements against the airline’s published limits.

Is fitting under the seat enough?

No. Underseat fit is only one requirement. Your handbag must also satisfy the permitted weight, dimensions and number of pieces. A small but very heavy bag can still exceed the allowance.

Follow the crew’s storage instructions. At a bulkhead seat, there may be no seat directly in front of you, so an otherwise compliant personal item may need to be stored overhead for take-off and landing. Its temporary storage location does not, by itself, determine its baggage category.

What does a 7 kg cabin bag look like?

There is no particular shape or size called a “7 kg bag.” Seven kilograms is a weight limit. A small trolley, duffel or backpack can weigh 7 kg once packed.

The empty bag counts too. If your trolley weighs 2.5 kg, a 7 kg limit leaves 4.5 kg for its contents. Books, laptops and chargers can make a compact bag unexpectedly heavy.

See our guide to cabin bag sizes allowed in India.

What Happens If Your Carry-On or Handbag Is Too Heavy?

The airline may ask you to repack, consolidate bags, purchase an available allowance upgrade or check a bag into the hold. Charges and options depend on the airline, your booking and where the problem is identified.

There is no guaranteed tolerance for being slightly over the limit. A previous trip without a weight check does not establish an entitlement for your next flight.

How strict is Air India with hand luggage?

Prepare for the published limits to be checked. Do not rely on a heavy bag being overlooked because it is small or because you completed online check-in. If staff question your allowance, show your booking and the current policy, and request clarification politely.

More generally, a handbag can be weighed as well as a trolley. See whether airlines weigh personal items.

If your cabin bag is taken for checking: remove power banks and spare lithium batteries before handing it over. Keep travel documents, essential medicines, money and valuables with you. Tell staff about any battery-powered devices you cannot remove and follow their instructions.

Read whether gate-checked bags are free and our lithium battery packing guide.

What Should You Pack in Your Handbag?

Use your personal item for essentials you would need if your larger cabin bag became unavailable during the flight.

  • Passport or other required identification and boarding pass.
  • Wallet, payment cards and securely stored valuables.
  • Essential medicines and relevant prescriptions.
  • Phone, charging cable and permitted battery accessories.
  • Glasses, small personal-care items and other immediate necessities.

A personal-item allowance does not exempt the contents from security screening. Check restrictions before packing cosmetics, perfume, sharp objects or other potentially restricted items. Our hand-baggage prohibited-items guide explains common problems.

Leave room to consolidate: a handbag packed completely full leaves no space for a separate small pouch or airport purchase if staff ask you to reduce your bag count.

Before-You-Fly Handbag Checklist

  1. Identify the operating airline for every flight, including domestic connections.
  2. Check the piece allowance: count your trolley, purse, backpack and laptop bag separately.
  3. Check how weight is calculated: separate limits or one combined allowance.
  4. Weigh bags fully packed, including chargers, toiletries and the bags themselves.
  5. Measure external dimensions rather than relying on a retailer’s description.
  6. Save the current policy and any purchased baggage allowance with your booking.
  7. Resolve excess baggage before boarding where possible, leaving time to repack or check a bag.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a handbag included in the 7 kg allowance?

It depends on the airline. Check the comparison table above: some provide a separate personal-item allowance, while others include the handbag in the combined cabin-baggage weight.

Does a handbag count as a personal item?

A qualifying small handbag can count as your personal item. Calling a large tote a handbag does not exempt it from size, weight or piece limits.

Does Air India allow a personal-item bag?

Yes. It publishes an additional personal-item allowance; the current limits are listed in the airline comparison table above.

Can I carry a backpack and a carry-on on Air India?

Check that the backpack qualifies under the personal-item policy. A full-size backpack should not be assumed to qualify simply because your other bag is a trolley.

Can a backpack and purse together count as one personal item?

Two separately carried bags are two pieces. If you place the purse inside the backpack, the packed backpack must still satisfy the applicable personal-item limits.

Can I take a handbag as well as an underseat bag?

Possibly, if those are your only two bags and they fit the airline’s main-bag and personal-item allowances. “Underseat bag” describes a bag’s intended storage, not an automatic additional entitlement.

Is a laptop bag always free in addition to a handbag?

No. A laptop bag may use the same personal-item allowance as your handbag. Carrying both separately alongside a trolley can exceed the permitted piece count.

What if my cabin bag is only slightly over 7 kg?

It is still over a 7 kg limit. Repack within the applicable rules or arrange an available baggage option; do not depend on a free tolerance.

School’s Out, Flight Prices Soar: Are Airlines Taking Advantage of Families Flying to India?

Updated: October 18, 2026

School holidays should make it easier to take children to India—not put the trip beyond the family budget. Yet parents comparing flights can face a painful choice: pay the holiday premium, accept a difficult journey or postpone seeing family.

Airlines call it dynamic pricing. Passengers may call it price gouging. Explaining that demand is high does not answer the question that matters to families: is the price reasonable, or is the airline charging more because it knows you have limited alternatives?

Airline Price Gouging

This article examines that fairness question, the role of pricing algorithms and the costs airlines cite. A lack of proof of illegal conduct does not establish that every fare is fair.

Consumer commentary supported by the sources linked below. Fare examples are explicitly illustrative, not live quotes or a market-wide price survey.

A Higher Fare Hits Four Times Harder When You Travel as a Family

A headline about the price of one ticket can miss the financial impact on parents travelling with children.

Consider this hypothetical example, assuming four seats are charged at the same all-in fare:

Illustrative family cost—not an observed airline fare
Scenario Return fare per person Four passengers
Lower-priced travel dates US$900 US$3,600
Holiday dates at double the fare US$1,800 US$7,200
Holiday dates at triple the fare US$2,700 US$10,800

In the third scenario, the family needs another US$7,200 before paying for accommodation, domestic travel or other trip expenses. Actual child discounts and infant charges vary, but the household-budget problem remains.

For a family visiting grandparents, this can mean a shorter stay, one parent travelling alone or another year without a visit. Calling the journey “leisure travel” does not capture its personal importance.

Why “Just Travel Outside School Holidays” Misses the Point

Flexible dates are useful advice only when the traveller has flexibility.

Parents may have to coordinate school attendance, approved annual leave, childcare, examinations and relatives’ availability. The cheaper week can be the week they cannot travel.

Summer also means different dates in different places. Indian school breaks do not necessarily align with holidays in Britain, Canada or the United States. Christmas and Diwali can create additional travel pressures for particular families and routes.

Our view: passengers should not have to defend wanting their children to see family during the weeks they are allowed to travel. Limited flexibility is a legitimate consumer concern—not a failure to understand how booking works.

High Demand or Airline Price Gouging?

The two ideas are not mutually exclusive in a discussion about fairness. Demand can rise, costs can increase, and passengers can still reasonably question whether an airline is taking excessive advantage of the situation.

Here, price gouging describes the consumer concern that prices exploit limited alternatives. Whether particular conduct violates a law is a separate question requiring evidence and the applicable jurisdiction’s rules.

Question What would help answer it?
Has the fare increased sharply? Comparable, dated quotes for the same route, cabin and inclusions.
Have operating costs increased? Relevant fuel, routing, currency and airline cost information.
Is the increase fair to passengers? An assessment of its scale, transparency, available alternatives and impact.
Have airlines unlawfully coordinated prices? Evidence of prohibited conduct, beyond expensive or similar fares alone.

Passengers do not need to prove a secret agreement before criticising an excessive price. Equally, a large fare increase alone does not reveal the airline’s margin or establish collusion.

The important distinction is between making a forceful consumer argument and claiming to have proved something that the available evidence does not establish.

AI Pricing: Does the Algorithm Know You Have to Travel?

Airlines do not need access to your family calendar to anticipate a busy holiday period. Demand forecasting can identify popular routes and dates from booking patterns and market information.

Industry pricing organisation ATPCO describes dynamic offers as combining pricing and product-bundling decisions. Its explanation of continuous pricing describes selecting prices from a range rather than only a small set of predefined amounts.

Not every pricing algorithm is artificial intelligence, and not every airline uses the same system. But more sophisticated forecasting raises an understandable concern: will technology make tickets easier to compare, or help airlines extract more revenue from passengers with few workable choices?

What has an airline actually said about AI pricing?

In its 2025 response about AI pricing, Delta acknowledged a pilot using AI to support pricing decisions. It said the system used aggregated information and denied setting individual fares from customers’ personal data.

That is the airline’s stated position, not an independent audit. It also does not establish how every carrier serving India sets its prices.

The consumer question remains valid even without personal surveillance: a system can identify strong demand for holiday flights without knowing which passenger is desperate to visit an ageing parent.

“The algorithm set the price” is not an answer to accountability. Airlines choose their commercial objectives and the systems used to pursue them. Software does not remove responsibility for pricing decisions.

Does searching repeatedly make your ticket more expensive?

A higher price on a later search does not, by itself, prove that the airline targeted you. Availability, fare conditions, currency, seller and timing may have changed.

Compare identical itineraries and final prices. A different result in another browser is a reason to investigate the difference—not proof that cookies caused it or that incognito mode guarantees savings.

Do Fuel Costs and Rerouting Explain the Entire Increase?

There are real costs to examine. Fuel prices, longer routes, aircraft availability, airport charges and currency movements can affect the economics of a flight.

In March 2026, Air India announced fuel surcharges, citing higher aviation turbine fuel prices and supply interruptions. Its cancellation-information page also records that it previously covered selected schedule adjustments between June and August 2026.

These are dated developments, not evidence that those same adjustments continue on every route.

The airline trade association IATA’s June 2026 outlook forecast fuel at 31.4% of global airline operating expenses, compared with 25.4% in 2025. That global forecast cannot be applied as the exact cost breakdown of an individual India flight.

A higher fuel bill does not automatically explain a tripled fare

If a ticket triples, that does not mean every input needed to operate the flight tripled. Nor can a passenger calculate the profit on one seat simply by comparing two ticket prices.

The fair question is more specific: how much of this increase reflects higher costs, how much reflects reduced availability, and how much reflects the opportunity to charge more?

Currency deserves similar scrutiny. A weaker rupee can increase dollar-linked expenses for an Indian carrier, but the effect differs by airline, revenue currency and hedging arrangements. It is not a universal explanation for every ticket sold in pounds, Canadian dollars or U.S. dollars.

Industry-wide financial pressure should be considered. It should not be treated as proof that every individual fare increase is proportionate.

How Much Choice Do Families Really Have?

Counting airline names is not enough. A family needs alternatives that actually work.

A lower fare may involve a distant departure airport, an overnight connection, a separate domestic ticket or a very long journey. For parents travelling with young children or elderly relatives, those differences matter.

The useful comparison is between realistic substitutes: similar travel dates, manageable connections, suitable baggage and a journey the family can complete.

Why can several airlines raise prices at the same time?

Competing airlines can face the same holiday demand or cost pressures. Similar price movements therefore do not, on their own, prove coordination.

A 2021 Competition Commission of India decision found insufficient evidence of a cartel for the April 2012–March 2014 period it examined. That historical finding is neither proof of present wrongdoing nor a permanent endorsement of future airline pricing.

Consumers can still ask whether competition on their route is strong enough to constrain holiday prices.

How to Document a Doubled or Tripled Fare

A clear comparison makes a complaint—or public criticism—harder to dismiss.

  1. Record the complete itinerary: departure and arrival airports, travel dates, flight numbers and connections.
  2. Keep the product comparable: cabin, baggage, refund conditions and passenger ages.
  3. Capture the final payable price: not just a search-result headline.
  4. Save the search date and time: record currency, seller and any membership or promotional discount.
  5. Compare several dates and carriers: one quote establishes one observation, not a market-wide pattern.
  6. Account for booking lead time: a departure next week and one six months away are not identical comparisons.

If a comparable fare rises from £700 to £2,100, it has tripled—a 200% increase, not a 300% increase. Use accurate arithmetic and state precisely what was compared.

This article does not claim that all summer flights to India triple. That claim would require a defined route-and-date survey.

The Family Bill Does Not End With the Headline Fare

Parents should compare the total cost of moving the whole family, not the lowest advertised price for one adult.

  • Checked baggage needed for the trip.
  • Any paid seating choices the family selects.
  • Infant charges or the applicable child fare.
  • Airport transfers and parking.
  • Accommodation during a long connection.
  • Onward travel within India.
  • Change restrictions that could make a later adjustment expensive.

Do not assume children receive large discounts. See child flight fares and discounts and infant ticket rules.

Also distinguish government taxes from airline-imposed charges. Our domestic ticket taxes and fees guide explains that distinction for Indian domestic journeys; international charges require their own breakdown.

What Should Airlines and Regulators Explain?

Airlines are commercial businesses. Expecting them to earn revenue is reasonable. Expecting transparent pricing and meaningful scrutiny is reasonable too.

When fares rise sharply, passengers deserve better than a generic reference to demand. Useful questions include:

  • Which costs increased, over what period, and by how much?
  • Was capacity reduced on the route, and why?
  • What does an availability warning actually describe?
  • What safeguards govern automated pricing and the data used?
  • Are advertised prices and optional charges presented clearly?
  • Is competition sufficient on routes with few practical alternatives?

The Indian aviation ministry’s published explanation of airfare regulation describes market-driven pricing while also discussing powers concerning excessive or predatory tariffs and oligopolistic practices. “Deregulated” should not be used as shorthand for “beyond scrutiny.”

For international tickets, the applicable legal framework depends on the journey and jurisdiction. An Indian domestic-fare explanation cannot settle every dispute involving a ticket bought abroad.

Our position: high demand explains why an airline may be able to charge more. It does not, by itself, establish that the amount charged is fair. Families are entitled to question the increase without first uncovering an illegal agreement.

What Can Families Realistically Do?

Money-saving advice should help families make choices, not blame them for needing to travel during school holidays.

Compare dates within the window you actually have

Check a few days either side if your school and work schedules allow it. Start monitoring before you must buy, but do not assume early booking guarantees the lowest fare. See our booking-time guide.

Price the whole family together

A one-person search does not establish that the same price is available for four people. Compare the complete party before making a decision.

Separate reservations can introduce seating and disruption complications, particularly with children. Do not split a family booking purely because a search appears cheaper without checking those consequences.

Compare alternative airports honestly

Add ground transport, overnight stays and extra travel time. A cheaper ticket from another city may still be useful, but the saving should survive a full-cost comparison.

Do not trade a high fare for an unmanageable connection

Look closely at self-transfers and separate tickets. If the first flight is delayed, the apparent saving can disappear. Read who pays after a missed connection.

Check the conditions before committing

Review refund conditions, rescheduling rules and payment-method offers. A discount is only valuable if the final price and conditions suit your trip.

Can You Complain About an Excessive Fare?

Yes, you can raise a pricing concern. Make it specific: identify the quote, the comparison, the advertised conditions and what you want the airline to explain.

For an India-related aviation grievance, the government’s AirSewa portal provides a reporting channel. For applicable U.S. air-travel consumer issues, the U.S. Department of Transportation accepts complaints and uses them to identify concerns.

A complaint does not automatically create a right to a cheaper ticket or refund. Misleading advertising, undisclosed charges and an unresolved refund can also involve different issues from a high but clearly disclosed quote.

Keep evidence. A precise account of what happened is more useful than an accusation unsupported by dates or comparable prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are airlines taking advantage of school holidays?

Holiday demand creates an opportunity to charge more, and families with fixed dates can bear the cost. Whether a particular increase is excessive deserves scrutiny rather than an automatic defence based on demand.

Does a tripled fare prove price gouging?

It supports asking hard questions, provided the comparison is valid. It does not by itself establish the airline’s costs, profit margin or a legal violation.

Does AI know the maximum I can afford?

Do not assume that. AI can support demand forecasting without identifying your personal budget. Claims about individual targeting require evidence about the specific system and data used.

Why does the same economy seat have different prices?

Price can vary with availability, timing and fare conditions even when the physical seat is similar. That explains variation but does not determine whether every price is reasonable.

Does “only two tickets left” mean the aircraft is almost full?

Not necessarily. Check what the message refers to, such as the displayed fare or offer. Read what airline availability messages can mean.

Should I wait for a last-minute holiday fare drop?

There is no guaranteed outcome. Compare the risk of higher prices or unsuitable availability against your budget and the importance of those dates.

Can I get money back if the price falls after booking?

That depends on the ticket conditions and any applicable price-protection offer. A later lower quote does not automatically produce a refund. See what to do after a fare drop.

Airline Tickets for Babies and Infants in India: Parent Guide

Updated: October 17, 2026

Yes, babies need to be included in your flight booking in India, even when they sit on your lap. An infant ticket normally covers a baby under two years old without a separate seat. It usually costs less than an adult ticket, but it is not automatically free.

From the second birthday, your child needs a separate seat and the applicable child or regular fare. Check your baby’s age on every travel date, including the return journey.

Baby travel guide covering infant flight tickets and airline rules in India

This guide explains infant ticket prices, airline age limits, documents, seating and baggage. It also clears up a common misunderstanding: you cannot assume every Indian airline lets you buy a separate seat for a baby under two.

Fares and airline policies can change; confirm the final conditions for your booking.

Do Babies Need Flight Tickets in India?

Yes. Add your baby as an infant when booking, or arrange an approved addition through the airline before travel. A lap infant does not occupy a seat, but the airline still needs the baby’s details and must confirm availability.

Flight booking categories for babies and children
Child’s age on the travel date Booking category Seat requirement
Below the airline’s minimum newborn age Ordinary booking may not be permitted Any exception requires the airline’s approval; a doctor’s note alone may not be sufficient.
Eligible newborn age to under two years Infant Usually travels on an accompanying adult’s lap under Indian airline policies.
Two to under 12 years Child A separate seat is required. Any discount depends on the carrier and fare.
12 years and older Usually adult fare category A separate seat is required; young-passenger supervision rules may still apply.

A baby is a passenger even without a seat. Do not arrive at the airport assuming the airline can simply add your child free of charge. Flights have limits on the number of infants they can carry.

How Much Does an Infant Flight Ticket Cost in India?

There is no single nationwide infant fare. Airlines may charge a fixed amount, use route-specific fees or calculate an international infant fare as a percentage of the adult base fare.

The total can also depend on the cabin, number of flight sectors, booking channel, taxes and whether the infant is added in advance.

Air India infant ticket prices

Air India’s published infant-fare page, checked for this update, lists the following domestic fares for an infant without a seat:

Cabin Published domestic one-way infant fare
Economy₹3,000
Premium Economy₹3,500
Business₹5,000
First Class, where offered₹5,000

The same page advertises international infant fares starting at 10% of the adult base fare. Check the final amount, including applicable taxes and charges. This does not mean 10% of whatever total you paid for the adult ticket.

Does IndiGo charge for infants?

Yes. IndiGo charges an infant fee. Its fees-and-charges page distinguishes charges by journey and includes airport-charge tables; it also notes discounted pre-booked infant charges.

Use the infant amount shown for your actual itinerary. Do not assume an old promotional ₹1 offer, a domestic fee or a Stretch-cabin figure applies to every flight.

Are babies under two ever free?

Do not assume free travel on Indian airlines. A temporary promotion may reduce a charge, but the baby must still be included in the booking and meet the airline’s conditions.

When comparing airlines, enter all adults, children and infants before comparing the final price. The cheapest adult fare may not produce the cheapest family booking.

Airline Infant Ticket Rules Compared

Airline Published newborn-age guidance Important booking point
Air India Its infant guide states a minimum age of seven days. Published infant guidance requires lap travel and an accompanying adult for each infant.
IndiGo Its infant page and conditions define an infant as over three days old and under two years. One infant per adult; its booking guidance does not permit a separate infant seat.
Akasa Air Infants up to seven days old are not permitted. One infant per adult, travelling on the adult’s lap; no extra infant seat.
SpiceJet Its infant FAQ describes eligible infants as above seven days and below two years. Add the infant to the reservation and carry accepted age proof.
Air India Express Its special-guests FAQ states at least nine days; its terms contain different age and medical-clearance wording. For a newborn, obtain confirmation of eligibility and required medical documents before paying.

Official references: Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, SpiceJet and Air India Express.

What happened to Vistara? Vistara merged into Air India on 12 November 2024. It should no longer appear as a separate current airline in an infant-ticket comparison. Use Air India’s current booking and infant policies. See the official merger announcement.

What if Your Baby Turns Two During the Trip?

Your child cannot continue travelling as a lap infant after turning two. The age on the date you purchased the ticket does not preserve infant eligibility.

For example, if your child is 23 months old on the outbound flight but has their second birthday before the return, contact the airline before booking. Ask how it will price and issue the complete itinerary.

Some booking systems apply infant eligibility across the whole reservation. You may need an airline-arranged booking or different ticketing treatment; do not enter an incorrect birth date to make the website accept the reservation.

Does a two-year-old pay full price?

A two-year-old needs a seat, but a separate seat does not automatically mean a full adult fare. Some airlines offer child discounts, while others charge the available regular fare.

Air India advertises child discounts of up to 25%, subject to its conditions and availability. A discount on the base fare does not necessarily reduce the full ticket price by the same percentage.

What Documents Do Babies Need to Fly?

Domestic flights in India

Carry the airline’s accepted proof of your baby’s age and the accompanying adult’s valid identification. A birth certificate is a useful starting point, but accepted alternatives vary.

  • IndiGo: lists a birth certificate, mother’s hospital discharge summary, vaccination certificate or passport as infant age-proof options.
  • Air India Express: its FAQ accepts a birth certificate or an alternative showing the date of birth, such as a hospital discharge summary.
  • Other airlines: confirm their document list and whether originals, digital documents or copies are accepted.

Can you fly without a birth certificate? Sometimes, if your airline accepts another document you hold. That is different from travelling without any age proof. Do not rely on a photograph of the baby or a verbal statement of their age.

Missing proof can mean repricing, refusal of the infant booking or travel being dependent on seat availability. It is not a problem you should plan to solve at the gate.

International flights

For ordinary passport-based international travel, your baby needs their own valid passport and any visa or other entry permission required for their nationality and destination. A parent’s passport or the baby’s birth certificate is not a general substitute.

Limited route-specific arrangements, such as certain India–Nepal journeys, require separate checking. Confirm documents with the airline and relevant authorities rather than assuming an exception applies.

If the baby travels with one parent or another adult, check destination-specific consent and relationship-document requirements. A consent letter does not replace a passport or visa.

Use our guides to documents for infants and children and parental consent letters.

How Early Can a Newborn Fly?

Airline permission and medical suitability are separate questions. Meeting the carrier’s minimum age does not establish that a particular newborn is ready to travel.

Discuss travel with your paediatrician, particularly after premature birth, illness or breathing problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ travel guidance recommends medical advice before flying with a newborn or an infant with relevant health concerns.

A medical certificate does not override an airline’s refusal to carry a newborn. If an exception is possible, the airline may require its own medical approval. For Air India Express, resolve the different wording in its terms and FAQ before arranging a newborn’s journey.

See How Early Can Infants Fly? for a fuller newborn-travel discussion.

Can You Buy a Separate Seat for a Baby?

Not on every airline. Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air publish infant policies requiring lap travel rather than allowing parents simply to buy an extra infant seat.

Do not book your under-two baby as a child using an incorrect birth date. Buying an extra seat for space also does not automatically authorise placing an infant in it.

For airlines that accept an infant in a separate seat, confirm the approved child restraint, size limits, installation position and booking process before purchase.

ICAO identifies an appropriate approved child restraint in a dedicated seat as the safest arrangement. That safety recommendation should inform your airline choice, but it does not mean every carrier offers the option.

See Can You Carry a Car Seat on Indian Flights?

Can one adult travel with twins?

Do not assume buying another seat solves the problem. Air India, IndiGo and Akasa Air require one accompanying adult for each infant under their published policies.

If another carrier permits one lap infant and one infant in an approved restraint, obtain that arrangement directly from the airline. Confirm it for every operating carrier on a connecting journey.

Does a bassinet count as a seat?

No. A bassinet is an onboard facility, not a separately ticketed passenger seat. Availability depends on the aircraft and the baby’s eligibility, and a request should not be treated as a guarantee.

Read Do Airlines in India Provide Bassinets for Infants?

Do Infants Get Baggage Allowance?

There is no universal 10 kg infant allowance across Indian airlines. Cabin baggage, checked baggage and stroller acceptance are separate benefits.

  • Air India: its current concession page lists additional checked baggage of 10 kg in Economy, 12 kg in Premium Economy and 15 kg in Business and First. Confirm what appears on your itinerary.
  • Air India Express: its FAQ allows an additional 10 kg within the accompanying adult’s checked baggage, not as a separate infant bag.
  • Akasa Air: its infant terms provide an additional hand-baggage allowance of up to 7 kg.

These examples illustrate why a cabin allowance should not be mistaken for a checked-baggage allowance. Do not assume a diaper bag, stroller and car seat are all unlimited extras.

Ask where a checked stroller will be returned: the aircraft door, another collection point or the baggage carousel. Keep essentials with you in case it is unavailable immediately after landing.

Can You Bring Breast Milk, Formula and Baby Food?

Baby feeding supplies can receive exceptions from ordinary cabin-liquid restrictions, but quantities and screening requirements still matter.

Air India’s restricted-baggage guidance permits baby food and products including milk and sterilised water in quantities considered sufficient for the journey. Present these items separately when requested and allow time for screening.

Check the rules at every airport where you will be screened, especially for international connections. Do not interpret a baby-food exception as permission for unlimited liquids.

Which Airline Is Best for Travelling With a Baby?

The best choice depends on your route and the help your family needs. Compare the complete journey rather than choosing from an infant fee alone.

  • Journey length: a convenient nonstop flight may be easier than a cheaper connection.
  • Seating: confirm whether your preferred infant restraint arrangement is accepted.
  • Baggage: compare baby essentials and stroller allowances.
  • Aircraft: check any bassinet request against the actual flight.
  • Schedule: allow enough time for feeding, changing and transfers.
  • Total cost: include every traveller, required bag and selected seat.

For seating considerations, read Best Seats When Flying With a Baby in India.

Booking Checklist for Parents

  1. Check the date of birth against every flight date. Flag a second birthday during the trip before paying.
  2. Select the infant passenger during booking. If adding the baby later, obtain a revised confirmation.
  3. Compare the complete family fare. Check whether charges apply separately to connecting sectors.
  4. Confirm the operating airline’s rules. A codeshare partner may have different requirements.
  5. Check documents. Pack accepted age proof, adult identification and international documents where required.
  6. Confirm seating and assistance requests. Save written approval for any special arrangement.
  7. Review baggage and stroller handling. Keep feeding supplies, nappies, wipes and spare clothes accessible.
  8. Recheck after changes. Make sure the infant remains attached to the booking after rescheduling or rebooking.

Already booked but forgot the baby? Contact the airline or ticket issuer promptly. Ask them to add the infant, collect the applicable charge and send an updated confirmation. Do not rely on an airport addition being available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a two-year-old need a flight ticket in India?

Yes. From the second birthday, book a child ticket with a separate seat. The fare may be discounted or may match the regular fare, depending on the airline.

Is an infant ticket free on Air India?

No. Air India publishes paid infant fares. The domestic amount depends on the cabin, while international pricing and applicable charges must be checked for the itinerary.

At what age is a flight ticket free?

There is no general free-flight age across Indian airlines. Under-two lap travel usually still attracts an infant charge.

Can my baby fly domestically without a birth certificate?

Possibly, if your airline accepts another document showing the baby’s age. Confirm the alternative before travel rather than arriving without proof.

Can a baby travel internationally on a parent’s passport?

For normal passport-based international travel, arrange the baby’s own passport and required entry permission. Check any narrowly applicable route-specific exception directly.

Does an infant ticket include a seat?

A lap-infant ticket does not. Separate-seat arrangements are airline-specific and are not offered under the published infant policies of several Indian carriers.

Can I still book a Vistara infant ticket?

Vistara no longer operates as a separate airline following its merger with Air India. Use Air India’s current booking channels and policies.

Your Power Bank Starts Smoking on a Flight—What Should You Do?

Updated: October 16, 2026

If your power bank starts smoking on a flight, alert cabin crew immediately. Press the call button and call out clearly. Do not wait for flames, pick up a smoking device or carry it down the aisle.

A portable charger can look harmless until it becomes unusually hot, swells or releases smoke. Recognising a problem early—and letting the crew respond—is more important than trying to save your phone, bag or charger.

Your Power Bank Starts Smoking on a Flight

This guide focuses on what passengers should do during an incident. For permitted battery sizes and packing requirements, see our separate Power Bank Rules on Flights in India.

HAPPENING RIGHT NOW? Stop reading and get a flight attendant’s attention. Say: “My power bank is overheating/smoking. It is here.” Point to its location, keep clear and follow the crew’s instructions.

What Happened on the October IndiGo Flight?

On 11 October 2026, IndiGo flight 6E 6115 from Delhi to Chennai diverted to Hyderabad after smoke was detected from a passenger’s electronic device. News reports identified the device as a power bank.

According to NDTV Profit’s report, the aircraft landed safely, the airline said the crew brought the situation under control, and an alternative aircraft was arranged. The airline’s statement did not establish the detailed cause of the device failure.

The incident is a reminder to take warning signs seriously. It is not evidence that every power bank will fail or that a particular brand caused the problem.

Warning Signs: You Do Not Need to Wait for Flames

The FAA’s passenger battery guidance says travellers should immediately notify crew if a battery or electronic device is overheating, expanding, smoking or burning.

Signs that need cabin crew attention
What you notice How to respond
Unusual or rapidly increasing heat Stop using the device and alert the crew. Do not keep testing whether it still charges.
A swollen, bulging or distorted casing Report it. Do not squeeze the casing or try to push it back into shape.
A burning smell or unexpected hissing or crackling Tell the crew what you noticed and where it seems to be coming from.
Smoke, sparks or flames Get immediate attention. Keep clear and let the crew manage the response.

You do not need to diagnose the fault. Describe what you can see, hear or smell without touching the device to investigate.

Why can a power bank catch fire?

Power banks contain rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. A damaged or faulty cell can enter thermal runaway: an uncontrolled heating process that can release gas and lead to fire. Damage, excessive heat and charging problems are among the possible triggers described in EASA’s lithium-battery safety guidance.

A battery does not have to be connected to a phone to develop a problem.

What Should You Do Immediately?

  1. Get the crew’s attention. Use the call button and speak loudly enough to be heard. Do not assume another passenger has already reported it.
  2. Identify the location clearly. Tell the crew whether the device is on your tray, in your bag, in an overhead compartment or trapped beside your seat.
  3. Describe the problem simply. For example: “There is smoke coming from the charger in the bag under this seat.” Tell them if it was connected to a phone or power outlet.
  4. Keep access clear. Do not crowd around the device or block the aisle to film. Move when the crew directs you.
  5. Report any injury or breathing difficulty. Tell the crew promptly if someone has been burned or affected by smoke.

Report first; explain later. You do not need the brand, capacity, receipt or a photograph before asking for help. Even if you accidentally packed or used the device incorrectly, do not delay reporting it.

Should you unplug it?

Do not reach through smoke or touch a hot or damaged device to disconnect a cable. Tell the crew what is connected and follow their instructions. Removing external power does not necessarily stop a battery failure already under way.

Dangerous Mistakes to Avoid

Transport Canada’s crew guidance on battery fires warns against moving an actively smoking or burning device, covering it, or using ice to cool it. For passengers:

  • Do not carry it to the lavatory or galley. Point out its location to the crew.
  • Do not hide it in a bag or wrap it in a blanket. Leave containment decisions to trained crew.
  • Do not use ice or dry ice.
  • Do not open the casing or remove the battery.
  • Do not open a smoking overhead compartment yourself. Alert the crew and keep clear.

A personal pouch or improvised container is not a substitute for the airline’s emergency procedures.

Can Water Be Used on a Power-Bank Fire?

Yes—water has a role in trained crew procedures for lithium-ion battery incidents. The blanket claim that water must never be used on a power-bank fire is misleading.

The FAA’s in-flight fire guidance includes cooling affected devices with water or other appropriate nonflammable liquids. Extinguishing visible flames and cooling battery cells are different parts of the response.

This is not an instruction to improvise firefighting. Location, nearby electrical equipment and the device’s condition matter. Alert the crew and assist only as directed.

What if Your Phone or Power Bank Falls Into the Seat?

Do not operate the seat controls to retrieve it. Moving a reclining or powered seat can crush a trapped battery. Tell the crew where the device fell and whether the seat has already been moved.

Transport Canada’s guidance for trapped electronic devices specifically warns against using electrical or mechanical seat functions during retrieval.

This is especially relevant in seats with complex reclining mechanisms. Ask for help even if the device is not yet hot or smoking.

How Can You Reduce the Risk Before Flying?

Inspect the device before packing

Do not travel with a swollen, damaged or recalled power bank. Check the manufacturer’s recall information for your exact model and follow its instructions if the product is affected. A device that still switches on is not necessarily safe.

Keep power banks out of checked baggage

Power banks and spare lithium batteries belong in cabin baggage, subject to the applicable limits. If your cabin bag is taken for gate-checking, remove these items before handing it over. The FAA specifically highlights this gate-check precaution.

Follow your airline’s storage and charging rules

Permission to carry a power bank does not automatically mean permission to use or recharge it during the flight.

IndiGo’s published baggage policy requires power banks and spare lithium batteries to remain within the passenger’s personal reach rather than in an overhead compartment or checked baggage. Follow the operating airline’s latest instructions on each flight.

For capacity limits, terminal protection and airline-specific restrictions, use these detailed guides:

Prepare for a flight without your portable charger. Charge your phone before departure and keep essential booking details available offline or on paper. A low phone battery is not a reason to disregard an onboard charging restriction.

What Happens After the Smoke Stops?

A battery can reignite, so the end of visible smoke does not mean the incident is over. The crew may continue monitoring the device and keeping passengers away from it. Do not attempt to retrieve or reuse it.

A diversion is an operational decision for the pilots. Passengers should follow announcements rather than assume every incident requires the same response.

If your journey is disrupted, keep your boarding pass and booking details, and obtain onward travel instructions from the airline. Deal with damaged-property or expense questions after the immediate safety issue has been resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

My power bank is hot but not smoking. Should I tell the crew?

Yes, if it is unusually hot or appears to be overheating. Do not wait for smoke or flames before reporting a concern.

Should I take a smoking power bank to a flight attendant?

No. Get their attention and identify its location. Do not pick it up and carry it through the cabin.

What if the smoking device belongs to another passenger?

Alert the crew immediately. You do not need the owner’s permission to report a safety concern.

Can I put the power bank back in my bag once it cools?

Do not resume handling or using it on your own. Let the crew decide how the affected device should be managed.

Does this advice also apply to a smoking phone or laptop?

Yes. Alert the crew immediately about an overheating or smoking electronic device, whether it is a phone, laptop, tablet or portable charger.

Does the IndiGo incident mean all power banks are banned?

No blanket ban can be inferred from a single incident. Carriage, storage and use are separate matters. Check your airline’s current policy before travel.

Flying via the Middle East: Is It Safe—or Should You Change Your Flight?

Updated: October 15, 2026

Should you keep your flight through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi—or pay more to travel another way? For passengers flying to India, especially families arranging travel for elderly parents, this has become a practical concern.

An operating flight does not guarantee an uninterrupted journey. During regional conflict, the questions extend beyond whether your aircraft departs: can your onward flight operate, what happens if you become stranded, and can you manage an unexpected overnight stay?

Flying via the Middle East

This guide explains how to assess a Middle East connection, when changing your route may be sensible, and what to check before cancelling a ticket.

Information checked: 15 October 2026. Airline notices and government advisories can change quickly. This article explains the decision process and includes dated examples; it is not a live airport-status board. Check every flight in your booking before leaving for the airport.

Is It Safe to Fly via the Middle East?

There is no reliable blanket answer covering every Middle Eastern airport, airline and travel date. Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Kuwait and other connecting points must be assessed individually.

At the time of this review, the UK government's advice for the United Arab Emirates and Qatar warned of an unpredictable regional situation, possible escalation, flight disruption and airspace closures at short notice.

Australia's Smartraveller regional guidance also distinguishes between countries: its reviewed guidance placed the UAE and Qatar at “Exercise a high degree of caution,” while advising travellers to reconsider non-essential travel, including transit, through several other regional countries.

These are government assessments for their respective citizens, not airport safety certificates. Read your own government's guidance and the advisory for each transit country.

Three different questions matter: Is the airport operating? Is your particular journey operating? Are you comfortable with the security and disruption risks? A “yes” to the first question does not settle the other two.

Are Flights Connecting Through Dubai, Doha and Abu Dhabi?

Do not interpret a suspension affecting one destination as a closure of an airline's entire connecting network. Equally, a flight appearing for sale does not confirm that every part of your journey will operate as planned.

Checks for the main Gulf connecting airports
Connecting airport Official source to check What matters for your booking
Dubai International — DXB Emirates travel updates, plus the operating airline's flight status Confirm both flights, terminals and any partner-operated sector. A destination-specific suspension does not mean all Dubai connections have stopped.
Doha Hamad International — DOH Qatar Airways travel alerts Check whether your destination is affected and whether your onward flight remains confirmed.
Abu Dhabi Zayed International — AUH Etihad flight status and booking notifications Check the exact flight number and date for both sectors. Do not assume the entire schedule is operating normally.

What did the latest notices say?

Qatar Airways' notice dated 12 October 2026 stated that flights to and from Riyadh and Dammam were temporarily suspended. That notice did not announce a suspension of every connection through Doha.

Emirates' notice dated 5 October 2026 stated that its codeshare operations with flydubai to and from Tel Aviv were suspended until further notice. This is narrower than saying Emirates or Dubai Airport has stopped operating.

Those examples show why the destination, operating airline and notice date matter. They do not establish the live status of a different flight.

Is Dubai Airport completely open?

“Completely open” is too broad to be useful for booking decisions. An airport can handle arrivals and departures while particular routes remain suspended, delayed or restricted. Check your incoming and outgoing flights instead of relying on a general “airport open” headline.

For ordinary travel planning alongside these disruption checks, see our Gulf to India Travel Guide.

Should You Avoid a Gulf Transit or Change Your Flight?

For a new booking during an unsettled period, an alternative route deserves serious consideration if the additional cost is manageable. This is particularly true for elderly parents travelling alone, passengers who need regular medical care, or anyone who cannot absorb a lengthy delay.

For an existing booking, check your options before cancelling. A voluntary cancellation can have different financial consequences from an airline cancellation or an eligible disruption waiver.

Your situation Practical approach
Your government advises against travel or transit through the connecting country Prioritise postponement or an alternative route, and ask the airline about applicable waivers.
Your flight is cancelled or your connection no longer works Contact the airline or ticket issuer for rebooking or refund options before heading to the airport.
Both flights remain confirmed on one through ticket Assess the current advisory, connection time and your ability to manage disruption before deciding.
You booked separate tickets or a self-transfer Consider changing the itinerary. Missing the second flight can leave you responsible for another ticket.
Your parents need assistance, or you are travelling with young children Give greater weight to a simpler itinerary, reliable support and fewer opportunities to become stranded.
You must arrive for surgery, a wedding or another fixed commitment Consider travelling earlier or choosing a route with fewer disruption dependencies.

Compare the full cost: a cheaper ticket can become expensive if you need another flight, a hotel, meals or extra days away from work. Ask what would happen if the connection failed before deciding whether the saving is worthwhile.

Would a nonstop flight be better?

A nonstop itinerary removes the need to change aircraft at a Gulf hub. Depending on your starting point, a connection through Europe or Asia may also be worth comparing.

However, avoiding a Middle Eastern airport does not necessarily mean avoiding Middle Eastern airspace. Flight paths can change, and an alternative hub has its own entry, transit and disruption considerations. Compare the complete journey rather than choosing by geography alone.

Which Middle East Airspace Is Closed?

A permanent list in a travel article cannot reliably answer a question that may change within hours. Restrictions can affect a particular airspace, route, altitude or time period, and different airlines may make different operational decisions.

Keep these distinctions in mind:

  • Airport closure: an airport cannot handle some or all planned operations.
  • Airspace restriction: aircraft cannot use a particular area under specified conditions.
  • Airline suspension: a carrier stops a route, even if the airport continues serving other airlines.
  • Rerouting: a flight operates using a different path, potentially changing its duration or connections.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency's conflict-zone advisory register distinguishes active notices from withdrawn ones. Check the status and validity dates of any bulletin being shared online. An old regional warning is not proof of today's closure, and a withdrawn bulletin is not a universal declaration that every route is safe.

For your trip, the useful question for the airline is: “Are both sectors of my itinerary operating, and has any routing change affected my connection?”

Which Airlines Have Been Affected by the Iran Conflict?

Passengers should check the carrier operating each flight, including codeshare services. The relevant airline and connecting point may include:

  • Emirates and flydubai: Dubai.
  • Qatar Airways: Doha.
  • Etihad Airways: Abu Dhabi.
  • Gulf Air: Bahrain.
  • Kuwait Airways: Kuwait.
  • Royal Jordanian: Amman.
  • Saudia: the Saudi airport shown on your booking.

This is a list of carriers to check, not a claim that every airline listed has suspended its network. European, Indian and other Asian airlines also need to be checked individually; an airline based outside the region can still have an affected route.

Has American Airlines dropped its Middle East flights?

Be precise about the destination and dates. American's official travel alerts, updated on 9 October 2026, listed separate policies for Tel Aviv and Doha.

Eligibility depends on conditions including ticket purchase date and travel dates. A waiver covering a period does not, by itself, prove that every flight is cancelled throughout that period. Check the actual flight and the policy applying to your ticket.

Which airline is cancelling the most flights?

There is no useful answer without a defined date range, route set and reliable cancellation data. A large airline may cancel more flights in absolute numbers while cancelling a smaller share of its schedule.

For passengers, the more important questions are whether their route is operating, how frequently alternatives run, and what rebooking the airline can provide.

How Much Time Do You Need for a Dubai Connection?

There is no single connection time that works for every Dubai itinerary. Terminals, concourses, security checks, baggage arrangements and assistance needs all matter.

Emirates' official transfer guide explains that connections can involve different concourses or terminals. Separately booked flights may also require baggage collection and immigration, unless an applicable transfer arrangement is available.

As a planning preference, allow breathing room beyond the airline's minimum connection time. A two-to-three-hour connection may be more comfortable than the shortest available option for a straightforward through-ticket journey, but it is not a universal minimum or a guarantee. Self-transfers and airport changes require separate assessment.

A longer layover does not protect you from an airspace closure. Several extra hours can help with ordinary delays; they cannot make a suspended onward flight operate.

Confirm whether both flights use DXB. A transfer involving DWC is an airport change and requires a different plan.

What is the difference between a layover and a connecting flight?

A connecting flight is the onward flight you take after changing aircraft. A layover is the time spent waiting between flights. Neither term tells you whether the flights are on one protected through ticket.

Ask the seller explicitly whether the itinerary is a self-transfer. One purchase confirmation does not necessarily mean one through ticket.

Flying With Parents or Young Children: Plan for a Delay

Before booking, consider whether the traveller could cope with an unexpected night at the airport, a long service-desk queue or a change of departure gate without family help.

  • Keep essential medicines accessible: carry them with prescriptions and any required permissions for the transit country.
  • Arrange assistance in advance: confirm the request appears on the booking and reconfirm it after rebooking.
  • Prepare phone access: check that roaming or an eSIM will work in the connecting country. An India-only plan may not.
  • Print essential details: booking references, airline contacts, emergency contacts and onward accommodation.
  • Keep essentials in cabin baggage: a change of clothes, necessary baby supplies and charging equipment permitted by the airline.
  • Agree on a family contact plan: decide who will help with calls and rebooking if the traveller loses internet access.

Our guides to travelling with an eSIM-only phone and getting connected after landing in India can help with the onward journey.

Can You Change Your Flight or Get a Refund?

Check the disruption policy before pressing “cancel.” If you cancel voluntarily while the flight remains scheduled, ordinary fare conditions may apply unless a waiver or another entitlement covers you.

  1. Check the exact policy: eligible airports, ticket issue dates, travel dates and rebooking deadlines.
  2. Ask about an alternative route: confirm whether a change fee, fare difference or airport change is involved.
  3. Contact the ticket issuer: a travel agency may need to process changes or refunds for its booking.
  4. Confirm all remaining flights: ask how a change affects the onward and return journey.
  5. Save written confirmation: retain cancellation notices, revised tickets and receipts.

Flights to, from or within the United States

Under U.S. Department of Transportation refund rules, a passenger is entitled to a refund when an airline cancels or significantly changes a covered flight and the passenger declines the alternative travel or compensation offered. Cancellation refunds apply regardless of the reason for the cancellation.

That does not mean a passenger automatically receives a refund simply because they are worried about a flight that remains unchanged. Nor does a ticket refund automatically reimburse a more expensive replacement booking or hotel.

For other journeys, check the rules applying to the itinerary and the airline's policy. Our guide to airline compensation versus travel insurance explains why these are separate sources of help.

Will Travel Insurance Cover a Middle East Disruption?

Do not assume that a policy covering delays also covers every consequence of war or regional conflict. Coverage depends on the wording, exclusions, purchase date and circumstances of the claim.

Before relying on a policy, ask the insurer in writing:

  • Does the policy cover transit through this country on my travel dates?
  • How do war, hostilities or known-event exclusions affect this trip?
  • Would a change in government advice affect cover?
  • Are additional accommodation and transport expenses covered, and under what limits?
  • Would unrelated emergency medical treatment remain covered?

Smartraveller's regional guidance specifically recommends checking insurance for cancellations, delays and changes to travel-advice levels.

Read our travel insurance claim rejection guide before assuming a new policy will cover a disruption already under way.

What Should You Do if You Become Stranded?

  1. Follow airport and local authority instructions. During a security incident, prioritise those instructions over attempts to reach another terminal or hotel.
  2. Contact the operating airline. Use its transfer desk, app or verified contact channels.
  3. Ask for a confirmed onward plan. Check flight dates, baggage handling and any assistance being provided.
  4. Check entry permission before leaving transit. A cancellation does not automatically authorise entry into the country.
  5. Keep records of necessary spending. Retain receipts without assuming all expenses will be reimbursed.
  6. Update family. Share your location and confirmed arrangements. Contact your embassy or consulate if you need consular assistance.

Before your first flight departs: check the onward sector again. Ask the airline for advice if it has been cancelled or materially changed; do not assume the problem will be resolved after you reach the hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are planes still flying over the Middle East?

Do not treat the entire region as one open or closed airspace. Availability and routing depend on current restrictions and airline decisions. A flight operating through one corridor does not establish that another is available.

Is it okay to transit through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi now?

Check the current government advisory, both flight sectors and your ability to manage disruption. This review does not establish a live all-clear for any of the three hubs.

Will planes stop flying because of the Iran conflict?

Individual flights or routes can be suspended, diverted or delayed. That does not necessarily mean all flights across the Middle East will stop. Follow notices affecting your itinerary.

Are U.S. flights being cancelled, and is flying within the U.S. unsafe?

Check the specific flight. A disruption affecting a U.S.–Middle East route does not establish that domestic flying within the United States is unsafe. These are different questions requiring different information.

Will the airline provide a free hotel if I miss my connection?

Do not assume so. Assistance depends on the circumstances, applicable passenger-rights rules and airline policy. Also confirm whether you can legally enter the country or use an airside hotel.

Is a very long layover the best solution?

Not necessarily. Extra time may help with routine delays, but it also increases time spent at the hub. It does not solve a route suspension or airport closure.

Should I book separate tickets to avoid an affected route?

Compare through-ticket alternatives first. Separate tickets may create baggage collection, entry-permission and missed-connection problems that outweigh the saving.
