You have landed in India, but your phone has no internet. You need to contact family, find your driver or open a hotel booking—and the airport Wi-Fi asks for an OTP you cannot receive.
I have personally faced problems getting connected after arriving in India. Using T-Mobile data has since made arrival easier for me. Your options depend on your mobile plan, but you do not necessarily need to buy an Indian SIM to get online.

What to Do Immediately After Landing in India
- Follow the crew’s instructions: When permitted, turn off airplane mode and allow your phone to register on a local mobile network.
- Choose your prepared connection: Use your home plan’s India roaming benefit or select your installed travel eSIM for mobile data.
- Check the relevant settings: Enable data roaming only on the line you intend to use and according to that provider’s instructions.
- Test with something small: Open a simple webpage or send a short message before attempting a call.

Using T-Mobile Data After Arriving in India
For eligible T-Mobile customers, India is included among international roaming destinations. Included data and texting can remove the need to find airport Wi-Fi immediately after arrival.
That convenience has helped me personally, but it is important to check your own plan. High-speed allowances, reduced speeds and voice-call charges differ; included data does not mean every call is free.
Before Departure
- Confirm that your exact plan includes data in India.
- Check the high-speed allowance and what happens after it is used.
- Confirm whether international roaming is enabled on your account.
- Save the provider’s connection instructions offline.
After landing, enable the appropriate roaming settings and allow time for network registration. Coverage and connection speed can vary. Check T-Mobile’s official international roaming guidance.

Using a Travel eSIM for Arrival Internet
A travel eSIM can provide mobile data without buying a local Indian SIM. Before purchasing, confirm India coverage, device compatibility, carrier-unlock requirements and the package’s activation policy.
Install it before departure when the provider allows. Some packages begin their validity when they first connect to a supported network; others may start earlier. Follow the package-specific instructions for data roaming and network settings.

Internet access and an Indian phone number are different things. A data-only eSIM can support internet apps, but it cannot receive an SMS addressed to your home number or supply an Indian number for services that require one.
How to Use Airport Wi-Fi Without an Indian Mobile Number
If you have no working mobile data, look for the airport’s official Wi-Fi instructions. Some airports accept international numbers for an SMS OTP; others provide access through passport verification.
Delhi Airport
Connect to GMR FREE WIFI. If you do not have an active Indian mobile number, Delhi Airport directs passengers to an information desk or Wi-Fi kiosk. Present or scan your passport, obtain the coupon code, and enter the KYC ID and code as instructed.

Mumbai Airport
Connect to #MumbaiAirportWiFi. Mumbai accepts local or international numbers that can receive SMS. If you have no SIM or cannot receive the OTP, visit an information desk or Wi-Fi kiosk with your passport for verification and access credentials.

Other Arrival Airports
At Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi, Hyderabad or another airport, ask staff for the current network and non-OTP access options. Do not assume the same kiosk process is available in every terminal.

What If Your Phone Still Will Not Connect?
You Have Signal but No Mobile Data
- Confirm that mobile data is enabled on the intended SIM or eSIM.
- Check that the package is active and covers India.
- Follow the provider’s instructions for data roaming and any required APN settings.
- Try restarting the phone if registration appears stuck.
- Use airport Wi-Fi to contact your provider if the problem continues.
The Airport OTP Never Arrives
Check your country code and make sure the line receiving the SMS is enabled. Airplane mode can prevent ordinary SMS delivery. A working data-only eSIM does not make a separate, inactive phone number receive messages.
If the OTP still fails, ask about identification-based access rather than repeatedly requesting codes.
Your Phone Shows Wi-Fi but Has No Internet
You may still need to complete the login page. Look for a “Sign in to network” notification, open your browser, or forget and reconnect to the official network. Ask the information desk for help if the portal does not load.
Your Old Indian SIM No Longer Works
Do not make an old SIM your only arrival plan. Check its status with the operator before travelling. An inactive connection may need more than a recharge to become usable again.
Contact Family or Your Driver Before Leaving the Terminal
Once connected, send a short message first. Confirm your terminal and the agreed pickup point before walking outside, where the airport Wi-Fi connection may disappear.
Example message: “I have landed and am collecting my bags. I will message again when I reach the designated pickup point. Please confirm where we should meet.”
- Save the driver’s number with its country code.
- Keep the pickup instructions and hotel address available offline.
- Confirm the exact meeting point instead of relying only on a location pin.
- If calls fail, try text messages before video or voice calls.
If you remain offline, ask an airport information desk about communication assistance or the designated transport counters.

- Offline copies of your boarding pass and accommodation details.
- Your pickup contact, meeting point and backup instructions.
