The Airports Authority of India’s prohibited-items guidance lists cricket bats, golf clubs, hockey sticks, ski poles and several other sporting implements as prohibited in hand baggage. It does not establish a blanket cabin ban on every sports accessory.
Airline acceptance and security clearance are separate requirements. A paid baggage service cannot override a prohibited-item rule, and security clearance does not exempt an item from airline size or weight limits.
Can You Carry a Cricket Bat on an Indian Flight?
Yes, in checked baggage—not in your cabin bag or carried loose onto the aircraft. This applies even if the bat is new, lightweight, a gift or intended for a child.
A complete cricket kit can include several items with different packing needs. Protect the bat’s edges and handle, cushion the helmet, cover protruding shoe spikes and secure smaller accessories so they cannot move around the bag.
Will a cricket bat cost extra?
Ask the airline how it will classify your packed equipment. A separately checked cricket kit may attract sports-handling or additional-piece charges, and excess weight can cost extra too. Being below your ticket’s weight allowance does not automatically remove a handling fee.
If your bat fits safely inside a normal suitcase, tell the airline what you are carrying and ask whether its sports-equipment charge still applies. Do not assume that placing equipment inside another bag creates a fee exemption.

Can You Carry a Badminton Racket in Cabin Baggage?
There is no single airline answer. A badminton racket should not automatically be treated like a cricket bat, but its length can still create a cabin-baggage problem.
Air India
Air India’s restricted-baggage guide lists properly packed badminton, tennis and squash rackets as allowed in both cabin and checked baggage. This does not waive cabin dimensions, piece limits or security screening.
Air India Express
Air India Express’s baggage FAQ says rackets are not allowed onboard and may be checked in, subject to screening. Air India and Air India Express therefore should not be grouped together for this question.
Other airlines and connecting flights
Give the operating airline the racket case’s actual length, width and depth. Ask whether it can travel in the cabin, whether it counts as a separate piece, and what checking it would cost.
For connections, verify every operating airline and any airport where you will pass through security again. Acceptance on the first flight does not guarantee acceptance on the next.
Protect the racket frame: a thin fabric sleeve mainly protects against scratches. For checked baggage, use a case with structure and padding, support the frame and keep heavy objects away from the string bed.

Does Sports Equipment Count Toward Your Baggage Allowance?
Usually, yes. The equipment and its protective case contribute to the weight you are checking in. A sports-handling payment generally pays for handling, rather than providing a separate weight allowance.
There are several possible charges, and you should ask which apply together:
- Sports-equipment handling: A charge for accepting and handling the equipment category.
- Excess weight: A charge when your checked baggage exceeds the weight included or purchased.
- Additional piece: A charge when you exceed the permitted number of bags.
- Oversize baggage: A charge or acceptance restriction based on packed dimensions.
Example: Suppose your ticket includes 15 kg of checked baggage. Your suitcase weighs 12 kg and your packed sports kit weighs 8 kg. The total is 20 kg, so you have 5 kg above the allowance. Paying a sports-handling fee does not automatically cover that 5 kg, and a separate-piece charge may also apply.
Ask for the total cost for your exact combination of bags. Do not add every published charge together yourself: airlines differ in how they classify equipment and apply overlapping fees.

Can You Take a Bicycle on a Flight in India?
Many airlines accept a properly packed non-electric bicycle as checked sports equipment, subject to aircraft capacity and their size limits. Confirm acceptance using the dimensions of the finished box or case, not the unpacked bicycle.
- Choose a suitable bike case or protective box. Follow the airline’s packaging requirements.
- Secure or remove components as instructed. This commonly includes removing pedals and turning handlebars parallel to the frame.
- Protect vulnerable parts. Cushion the frame, fork, derailleur and any detached wheels.
- Secure small parts. Put pedals and fittings in a labelled pouch inside the case.
- Check tyre instructions. Follow the airline’s requirements rather than assuming all carriers require the same degree of deflation.

Use a travel case that protects club heads and shafts from pressure. Secure loose accessories and avoid filling every spare space with heavy belongings. Ask whether the golf bag attracts handling, additional-piece or excess-weight charges.
Footballs and Basketballs
Check deflation requirements. Air India lists inflatable sports balls as acceptable only when deflated; Air India Express requires inflatable items to be completely deflated before boarding. Pack your pump and inflation needle securely.

Surfboards, Skis and Fishing Rods
Long equipment needs advance confirmation because aircraft hold dimensions can limit acceptance. Protect board edges, ski tips and rod sections. Use a rigid rod tube where appropriate, and keep sharp tackle securely contained in checked baggage.

A wetsuit and fins raise different questions from a cylinder, gas cartridge or powered diving light. Do not assume that an empty cylinder or small cartridge is automatically accepted. Identify the cylinder type and every gas or battery component when requesting airline approval.
Gym and Fitness Equipment
Soft accessories such as exercise clothing and simple resistance bands are easier to pack within ordinary baggage limits. For dumbbells, kettlebells or heavy metal equipment, plan for checked baggage and confirm acceptance. Protect other contents from concentrated weight and sharp edges.

How to Pack Sports Equipment and Avoid Airport Delays
- Confirm the exact item. Give the airline its description, packed dimensions, weight and any battery or gas components.
- Check every flight. Pay particular attention to smaller aircraft and connections involving a different airline.

- Use protective packaging. Prevent movement inside the case and protect frames, shafts, edges and other vulnerable points.
- Photograph the equipment. Record its condition and how it was packed before closing the bag.
