You can generally use an unlocked Canadian iPhone or compatible Android phone in India. The bigger decision is how to get affordable internet while keeping access to your Canadian number for calls, banking messages and one-time passwords (OTPs).
For many travellers, a practical setup is to keep the Canadian line active for essential messages and use a separate travel eSIM or Indian connection for data. However, this only works as intended if your Canadian provider supports service in India and you understand which activities trigger roaming charges.
This guide covers Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Freedom Mobile and other Canadian brands, with particular attention to bank OTPs, Wi-Fi calling and avoiding unexpected bills.
Three things to arrange before departure:
- Internet: decide between included roaming, a travel pass, a travel eSIM or an Indian connection.
- Your Canadian number: confirm whether it can receive calls and SMS in India.
- Bank access: set up an approved alternative to SMS verification wherever your bank offers one.
A data-only travel eSIM does not automatically receive OTPs sent to your Canadian number.

Can You Use a Canadian iPhone in India?
Usually, yes. Check that the phone is unlocked, supports the Indian network you intend to use and can accept the SIM or eSIM required by that provider. Network registration, voice calling, 5G and Wi-Fi calling are separate compatibility questions; a working data connection does not guarantee every feature.
On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the phone is unlocked.
Canada’s Wireless Code requires providers to supply unlocked devices and unlock eligible locked devices without a fee. Nevertheless, check an older, refurbished or privately purchased phone before travelling. See the CRTC’s unlocking guidance.
What is different about a Canadian and an Indian iPhone?
The differences depend on the exact model and generation. Compare SIM support, cellular specifications and service eligibility rather than assuming every iPhone sold in a country has the same configuration.
For example, Apple lists the Canadian iPhone 17 as eSIM-only, while the Indian iPhone 17 supports nano-SIM and eSIM. A traveller with the Canadian version cannot insert a physical Indian SIM card.
Sources: Apple Canada iPhone 17 specifications and Apple India iPhone 17 specifications.
Warranty service is another consideration: Apple’s terms allow it to restrict iPhone warranty service to the original country of sale. Do not assume an imported phone has unrestricted worldwide warranty service. Check Apple’s warranty terms.
Canadian Mobile Networks: Check Your Actual Brand
Canada has several mobile network operators, or MNOs, alongside related brands with different prices and features. Sharing a parent company or Canadian network does not mean sharing the same India roaming policy.
The Major National Networks
| Network group | Related Canadian brands | What matters for India travel |
|---|---|---|
| Bell | Virgin Plus and Lucky Mobile | Check the exact brand and plan. Bell roaming availability does not mean Lucky Mobile works overseas. |
| Rogers | Fido and chatr | Confirm India coverage, call and SMS rates, and Wi-Fi calling with your own brand. |
| TELUS | Koodo Mobile and Public Mobile | Do not assume TELUS travel options are included with Koodo or Public Mobile, especially on prepaid plans. |
Brand information: BCE/Bell, Rogers and TELUS.
Regional and Alternative Networks
- Vidéotron, Freedom Mobile and Fizz: these belong to the Québecor group. Their plans and international features differ. A good Canada–U.S. plan is not automatically a good India plan.
- SaskTel: travellers should check its international roaming search and the terms for their specific account.
- Eastlink: check its India travel options separately from domestic coverage or Canada–U.S.–Mexico benefits.
Official references: Québecor telecom brands, SaskTel international networks and Eastlink travel support.
Budget-brand warning: Lucky Mobile explicitly says it does not offer international roaming and its mobile service will not work outside Canada. A Lucky phone can still use another compatible SIM/eSIM or internet apps over Wi-Fi, but those do not deliver ordinary SMS sent to the inactive Lucky connection.
See Lucky Mobile’s international service notice. Public Mobile customers should also check the current coverage page; Canada–U.S.–Mexico coverage does not establish India service.
Canadian Roaming, Travel eSIM or Indian SIM: Which Should You Use?
| Option | Main advantage | Main limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canadian plan with India roaming included | Uses your existing number and plan benefits | India, your trip length and intended usage must be covered | Travellers whose existing plan already includes suitable benefits |
| Canadian roaming pass | Convenient access to calls, texts and data | Daily fees can add up; eligibility and usage limits apply | Short visits or people who need frequent Canadian-number calls |
| Travel data eSIM | Can be arranged before arrival | Often supplies data only, without an Indian number or Canadian SMS service | Maps, messaging apps, email and arrival-day internet |
| Indian SIM or eSIM | Local number and local mobile service | Identity verification and activation are required | Longer stays or frequent local calls and services |
| Wi-Fi only | No separate mobile data purchase | No dependable connection between hotspots; Canadian SMS is not guaranteed | A backup rather than your only arrival plan |
What is the cheapest way to use your phone internationally?
Check your existing plan first. If India roaming is already included, another purchase may be unnecessary. Otherwise, compare the total trip cost of a pass against travel data and an Indian connection.
Illustration only: a hypothetical C$15 daily fee used on 14 days costs C$210 before tax. Compare that with the complete cost of your alternative, including any calls or texts you still make through the Canadian line. This is not a quoted rate for a particular carrier.
When comparing travel eSIMs, check the Indian partner network, data allowance, validity start, hotspot rules, speed restrictions and whether voice or SMS is included. “Unlimited” can still involve fair-use limits.

Can You Keep Your Canadian Number While Using an eSIM in India?
Yes. Adding a second SIM or eSIM does not automatically cancel your Canadian service or change its number. Keep the Canadian account paid and active, and confirm that your phone supports the two active lines you need.
However, keeping ownership of a number is different from being able to receive messages on it in India. A suspended plan, unsupported roaming destination or unavailable Wi-Fi calling service can leave you unable to receive SMS.
Will Canadian bank OTPs arrive?
They may arrive through supported cellular roaming, or through supported carrier Wi-Fi calling and messaging. Delivery also depends on the bank, its messaging provider and your account configuration.
- Confirm that your exact Canadian plan can receive SMS in India.
- Ask whether incoming SMS is free and whether receiving one triggers a roaming pass.
- Enable a bank-approved app verification method, authenticator, security key or recovery option where offered.
- Test your banking access before departure and save the bank’s overseas support details.
TELUS states that incoming SMS does not trigger Easy Roam, while sending an SMS, using cellular data, or making or answering a voice call can trigger it. This is a TELUS policy example, not a rule for every Canadian provider. See TELUS roaming guidance and select India when checking your travel options.
Can Fongo replace your Canadian SIM for banking?
Do not assume it can. Fongo is a VoIP service, and some institutions do not support VoIP numbers for authentication. Fongo also says certain verification messages require a paid texting package or Fongo Plus; purchasing one does not make every sender compatible.
Confirm support with your bank before transferring an important number. See Fongo’s verification-message guidance.
Freedom Mobile is a mobile carrier, not the same type of service as a VoIP app. Its roaming and Wi-Fi calling options must be evaluated against the specific plan.
Can You Use Canadian Wi-Fi Calling in India?
It depends on your carrier. Turning on airplane mode and reconnecting to Wi-Fi is not a universal workaround for receiving Canadian calls and OTPs.
| Carrier | Published Wi-Fi calling position | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Rogers | Supports Wi-Fi calling outside Canada. Incoming calls/messages and outgoing calls/messages to Canadian numbers are treated under the plan without roaming or long-distance charges, subject to its terms. | Calls to Indian or other non-Canadian numbers can have different charges. |
| Bell | Wi-Fi calling is available only within Canada. | Do not rely on Bell Wi-Fi calling for your India connection. |
| TELUS | Wi-Fi calling is available only in Canada. | Arrange another supported method for Canadian calls and SMS in India. |
| Freedom Mobile | Wi-Fi calling usage is treated as if made on its network in Canada, regardless of location. | Calls to destinations outside your Canadian plan can attract long-distance charges. |
Check the official terms before travelling: Rogers, Bell, TELUS and Freedom Mobile.
Set it up before leaving Canada: if your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling abroad, activate and test it at home. In India, confirm that the phone actually shows the carrier’s Wi-Fi calling connection before making a call. A Wi-Fi symbol alone does not establish how a telephone call is being routed or billed.
Using another SIM’s cellular data to support the Canadian line is also device- and carrier-dependent. Do not assume this works simply because both lines are installed.
Will You Be Charged for Incoming Calls in India?
Answering a call on a Canadian line over an Indian mobile network can trigger a roaming fee or per-minute charge. The caller being in Canada does not make the call free for you abroad. Your plan may include that usage, but you must check.
Ordinary SMS, picture messages, app messages and phone calls can be billed differently. Bell, for example, describes incoming texts as free in its roaming guidance, but that does not make answered calls or outgoing messages free. See Bell’s international roaming guide.
Will turning on data roaming immediately charge you?
The setting itself is not a purchase, but it permits roaming data use. Background apps can begin transferring data without you opening a browser, potentially triggering a pass or pay-per-use charges.
Turning data roaming off does not disable ordinary voice calls and SMS. Answering a call or sending a text can still be chargeable while data roaming is off.
Some travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled because they connect through partner networks. Follow that eSIM provider’s instructions and apply the setting to the correct line.
Choose between access and isolation: leaving the Canadian line connected may preserve SMS access but requires careful control of chargeable usage. Turning that line off prevents its ordinary cellular calls and SMS from reaching you. Airplane mode also prevents cellular roaming, but carrier Wi-Fi calling can still have billing rules if you re-enable Wi-Fi.
How to Set Up an iPhone With Canadian Service and India Data
- Install the second connection: follow the provider’s activation instructions while you have reliable internet. Check when validity begins.
- Label your lines: use names such as “Canada” and “India Data.”
- Select the data line: open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service > Cellular Data and choose the India/travel connection.
- Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching: this helps prevent automatic data switching to the other line.
- Review roaming separately: turn Canadian data roaming off if avoiding Canadian roaming data. Enable it on the travel eSIM only if instructed.
- Review calls and messages: check which line is selected before making calls or sending SMS. Existing contacts can retain their previously used line.
- Keep the Canadian line active only as planned: confirm its India SMS support and understand the charges before using it.
Menu wording varies by iOS version. These settings do not block every possible charge on an active Canadian line. See Apple’s Dual SIM instructions and international eSIM travel guide.
Should You Get an Indian SIM or eSIM?
An Indian connection can be useful for a longer visit, local calling and services that require an Indian mobile number. A data-only travel eSIM usually does not provide those local-number benefits.
Ask an authorized provider outlet about the documents required for your nationality and immigration status. Foreign visitors should be prepared to present their passport, visa or other applicable status document, and requested address or contact information. Do not assume an online activation process designed for Indian residents will accept your documents.
Indian eSIM support does not guarantee immediate new-customer activation for every foreign visitor. If your phone has no SIM tray, confirm that the outlet can issue an eSIM directly to an eligible visitor before paying.
Jio’s customer terms include verification requirements and validity restrictions for foreign customers. Check the relevant Jio customer terms and the conditions for the prepaid or postpaid service you intend to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Canadian SIM in India?
Yes, if your provider and exact plan support roaming in India, the required account features are enabled, and your phone is compatible. An international calling add-on for calls from Canada is not the same as international roaming.
Is roaming in India free?
Not automatically. India usage might be included in your plan, covered by a purchased pass or charged separately. Check India specifically; Canada–U.S. or Canada–U.S.–Mexico benefits do not imply India coverage.
Can I get an eSIM and keep my Canadian number?
Yes. Add the travel connection as a second line and keep your Canadian subscription active. The travel eSIM does not take over delivery of messages sent to your Canadian number.
Can I use WhatsApp with my Canadian number and Indian data?
An already-registered WhatsApp account can generally use a different internet connection without changing its registered number. Keep control of the Canadian number because you may need to verify it again if you reinstall the app or change phones.
Why do WhatsApp messages arrive but bank OTPs do not?
WhatsApp uses the internet. A bank OTP sent by ordinary SMS needs a supported connection to the Canadian mobile line. Working travel data alone does not establish that SMS connection.
Should I turn off my Canadian line completely?
That can prevent ordinary cellular usage on the line, but you will also lose its cellular SMS and calls. If you need OTPs, arrange an approved alternative or confirm a supported, affordable way to keep receiving messages.
Can I take three iPhones from Canada to India?
Do not assume three phones are automatically duty-free. Customs treatment depends on genuine personal use, gifts, value and the applicable baggage rules. Multiple new phones can require declaration and duty; unboxing them does not create an exemption.
Check the Baggage Rules, 2026 and our guide to how many phones you can carry to India.
Can any international phone work in India?
Being sold overseas is not itself a barrier. Check the exact model’s network compatibility, lock status and SIM support. Older phones and region-specific models need particular attention.
What is a practical setup for a Canada-to-India trip?
First use any suitable India benefits already included in your Canadian plan. Otherwise, compare travel data or an Indian connection while preserving a verified method of accessing your Canadian number and banking accounts.
