“You’re flying to India anyway. Could you take this small package for my family?”
It sounds like a simple favour. Perhaps the request comes from a close friend, a relative or someone in your community. But once that package goes into your luggage, you may be the person answering questions about its contents, value and legality.
Do not carry a sealed, unknown or unverifiable package for someone else. Even when you inspect the contents, you still need to check airline restrictions, customs requirements and any necessary documents. Friendship, a receipt or a promise to pay the duty does not remove those checks.

Should You Carry a Package to India for a Friend?
The safest choice is to decline anything you cannot confidently identify, verify and lawfully transport. You do not have to accept the risk simply because you have space in your suitcase.
There is a practical difference between helping a relative with an identifiable item of clothing and agreeing to transport an unexplained sealed parcel. However, neither the sender’s identity nor the package’s appearance establishes what is inside.
CISF’s air-travel guidance tells passengers to carry luggage known to them, verify packed gifts and avoid accepting baggage from strangers. These are sensible boundaries even when the request reaches you through a mutual acquaintance.
“I trust my friend” and “I know what I am carrying” are different statements. Your friend may also be passing on something packed by a shop, colleague or another relative.
Who Is Responsible for the Contents of Your Baggage?
Section 77 of India’s Customs Act, 1962 requires the owner of baggage to declare its contents for clearance. Explaining that an item belongs to someone else does not remove the need to give customs accurate information.
Depending on the goods and circumstances, a problem can lead to questioning, delays, duty assessment, detention or seizure of goods, penalties, and potentially prosecution. The applicable offence, evidence and legal requirements determine the outcome.
It is too simplistic to say that every passenger is automatically criminally guilty regardless of knowledge. It is equally unsafe to assume that “I didn’t know” guarantees release or prevents an investigation.
The U.S. State Department’s India advisory warns that some U.S. citizens arrested at Indian airports for drug smuggling claimed they did not know they were carrying narcotics. It advises against transporting packages belonging to others.
A friend’s written promise to “take full responsibility” is not immunity. It may help document the arrangement, but it does not bind customs, airport security or investigating authorities.
Why Opening the Package Is Not Enough
Opening a parcel is a basic precaution, not a guarantee. A quick look cannot reliably establish the ingredients of a powder, the authenticity of medicine, the contents of a modified object or whether an item requires an import authorisation.
If you choose to consider carrying an ordinary, identifiable item, inspect it before travel, check the relevant rules and pack it yourself. Do not accept a replacement package after your inspection.
You should be able to answer practical questions:
- What exactly is each item?
- Who bought it, and who will receive it?
- What is its genuine value?
- Is it a gift, a personal possession or merchandise for sale?
- Does it contain a battery, liquid, medicine, food or restricted material?
- Is it permitted by the airline and the countries involved?
If an answer depends entirely on “just trust me,” decline. Do not dismantle suspicious objects or attempt to test unidentified substances yourself.
Packages That Deserve Particular Caution
| Request | What could go wrong? | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| A sealed parcel with unspecified contents | You cannot explain or verify what you are carrying. | Decline. |
| Gold, jewellery or expensive watches | Customs eligibility, value, ownership and declaration issues. | Do not accept as a casual favour; obtain item-specific guidance first. |
| Several new phones or other electronics | Duty, commercial-purpose questions and battery restrictions. | Check quantity, value, intended use and carriage rules. |
| Medicines, supplements or powders | Ingredients may be controlled, restricted or impossible to verify. | Decline unidentified products; confirm any authorisation requirements. |
| Cash or valuables for delivery | Currency rules, source-of-funds questions and loss risk. | Suggest a regulated transfer or appropriate professional service. |
| Food, seeds or plant products | Import, quarantine and airline restrictions. | Check the exact ingredients and destination requirements. |
| Documents or an envelope | The contents may be different from what you were told. | Verify what you are carrying; do not accept an unexplained sealed envelope. |
Gold and jewellery
A request to “just wear this chain” should not replace a proper customs check. Wearing an item does not establish an exemption, and someone else’s jewellery does not become your long-owned personal possession simply because it is on your body.
Read the relevant gold jewellery customs guide and obtain advice suited to the actual journey, ownership and purpose.
Phones and laptops
Do not agree to remove packaging or describe a new gift as your used personal device to avoid scrutiny. Keep genuine invoices and explain the intended recipient accurately.
Our guides to bringing an iPhone to India and bringing a laptop to India explain why personal-use claims and additional devices need separate consideration.
Medicines for someone else
“It is only medicine” is not sufficient reassurance. Some medicines contain narcotic or psychotropic substances, and permission can depend on the drug, quantity, documentation and country.
India’s Department of Revenue guidance tells international travellers wishing to bring narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances for medical use to seek permission from the Narcotics Commissioner in advance. Do not assume a personal-treatment provision automatically covers delivery to another person.
Check transit requirements too, particularly if you will enter the transit country or collect and recheck baggage. The Ministry of External Affairs advises travellers to verify that medicines are permitted in the countries they visit.
What Documents Should You Ask For?
For an ordinary lawful item you decide to carry, obtain enough information to explain it clearly. Depending on the item, useful records may include:
- A genuine purchase invoice showing the item and value.
- A clear description, quantity and model or serial number where relevant.
- The sender’s and recipient’s names and contact details.
- Any required prescription, permit or import authorisation.
- Your correspondence explaining the request and intended use.
Keep these records accessible during the journey. A receipt or photograph supports an explanation; neither proves that the contents are lawful or replaces a required permit.
Do not sign a statement you know is inaccurate. If airline staff ask whether you packed the bag or are carrying something for another person, answer truthfully.
Does Your Friend’s Package Use Your Customs Allowance?
Do not assume the package has a separate duty-free allowance because it belongs to someone else. Customs assesses the goods you bring under the applicable baggage rules, including their nature, value and purpose.
Section 79 of the Customs Act recognises qualifying bona fide gifts within the baggage framework. That does not make every delivered parcel, commercial order or valuable gift exempt from duty.
Check the current CBIC guidance for international travellers. A friend waiting outside the airport cannot simply lend you their allowance or replace your obligation to declare what is in your baggage.
When should you declare the goods?
Mumbai Customs identifies the Green Channel for passengers without dutiable or prohibited/restricted goods and the Red Channel for passengers carrying such goods.
The 2026 baggage declaration regulations provide for electronic declarations of accompanied baggage containing dutiable or prohibited goods before entering the Green Channel. The official ATITHI portal supports baggage and currency declarations.
If you are uncertain, ask customs before choosing the Green Channel. Declaring a prohibited item does not make its import lawful. Resolve permit and prohibition questions before travel.
What about airline baggage limits?
The package also consumes your airline baggage allowance. Agreeing that someone will reimburse excess-baggage charges does not make an overweight or restricted item acceptable.
Check every flight, including an onward domestic booking. See the international-to-domestic baggage problem for NRIs.
Requests You Should Refuse
- “Please do not open it.” You cannot verify the contents.
- “Say it belongs to you.” You are being asked to give a misleading explanation.
- “Remove the invoice or packaging so customs will not notice.” The request involves concealing relevant information.
- “Someone will hand it over just before boarding.” You have no proper opportunity to check it.
- “I will pay you well; no questions asked.” Payment does not reduce your exposure.
- “My contact will handle customs.” An informal promise is not official clearance.
- “It is from my friend’s friend.” You may not know the actual sender or packing history.
A last-minute request from a social-media travel group deserves the same caution as a request from an unknown person at the airport.
How to Say No Without Making It Personal
You do not need to accuse anyone or debate their intentions. Set a consistent boundary:
“I’m keeping my luggage limited to things I can personally verify and clear through customs. Please send this through an appropriate courier.”
For valuables or medicines:
“I’m not comfortable carrying someone else’s valuables or medicines across a border. I cannot take responsibility for the paperwork or airport questions.”
A professional courier or postal service still has its own restrictions, declarations and charges. It is an alternative for eligible goods—not a way to ship prohibited contents. For specialised items, consult our importing into India guide.
What If You Have Already Accepted the Package?
Before leaving home
You can change your mind. If you cannot verify the contents, establish the rules or obtain necessary documents, return the package and explain that you cannot carry it.
At the airport or during the journey
If the package appears suspicious, stop handling it and notify airport security or airline staff. Do not open, test, abandon or pass it to another traveller. Onboard, alert the cabin crew.
If it is already in checked baggage, tell staff immediately and provide the baggage-tag details. Do not attempt to enter a restricted baggage area yourself.
If customs or police question you
Give an accurate account, retain relevant messages and documents, and request qualified legal assistance if the matter becomes an investigation. If detained abroad, ask about contacting your embassy or consulate.
The Airports Authority of India advises passengers to prevent others from placing items in their baggage without their knowledge and to report suspicious circumstances to security.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is carrying something for a friend automatically illegal?
No. The contents, purpose, declarations and applicable rules matter. The central warning is not to carry unknown or unverifiable goods or assume friendship creates an exemption.
Is a factory-sealed box safe to carry?
A seal does not establish lawful contents or customs eligibility. If preserving the seal prevents you from verifying an item, you can decline the request.
Can I carry only documents for someone?
Identifiable ordinary documents can be different from merchandise, but verify what you are carrying. Do not assume an unexplained sealed envelope contains only papers.
What if my friend promises to pay all customs charges?
That is a private arrangement. It does not prevent inspection, resolve missing permits or make prohibited goods acceptable.
Does carrying the package in hand luggage reduce the legal risk?
No. Cabin and checked baggage have different aviation restrictions, but neither location removes customs obligations.
Will one incident permanently blacklist me at every airport?
There is no basis for treating a permanent worldwide airport blacklist as an automatic outcome. Serious violations can have significant legal and travel consequences, but those depend on the case and jurisdiction.
What is the simplest rule to follow?
If you cannot confidently explain what the item is, why you are carrying it and whether it is permitted, do not take it.
