Can You Bring an iPhone From Dubai to India? Customs Duty Guide

Updated: October 02, 2026

Yes, you can buy an iPhone in Dubai and bring it to India. Whether you owe customs duty depends on your passenger category, the phone’s purpose and value, and the other purchases you are carrying.

Your everyday phone, a new iPhone for yourself and two boxed phones for relatives are different situations. Before comparing Dubai and India prices, calculate the possible customs bill and check the exact model’s SIM configuration and warranty conditions.

Can You Bring an iPhone From Dubai to India

Quick answer: Eligible passengers arriving by air can use a ₹75,000 general duty-free allowance for qualifying purchases. This is a combined allowance, not ₹75,000 for each phone. A genuinely used personal phone may qualify separately as a personal effect. Unboxing a new purchase does not automatically make it exempt.

Last checked: 2 October 2026. This guide covers phones carried with a passenger, rather than phones shipped by courier or imported for resale.

Buying a normal consumer iPhone abroad is not, by itself, prohibited. The important distinction is between lawful import and duty-free import: something can be allowed into India while still attracting customs duty.

A phone genuinely used for your daily needs can be considered under the personal-effects rules. A new purchase or gift needs assessment under the relevant baggage allowance and duty provisions.

India’s Baggage Rules, 2026 provide an exemption for qualifying used personal effects. They do not establish a blanket entitlement to bring one newly purchased iPhone of any price tax-free.

Keep evidence of an existing device’s ownership where practical, especially when travelling with several valuable electronics. See our guide to bringing used electronics to India.

Who Gets the ₹75,000 Duty-Free Allowance?

The government’s 2026 baggage announcement sets different general allowances for different passenger categories.

Passenger arriving by air General allowance
Resident covered by the baggage rules ₹75,000
Tourist of Indian origin, including eligible NRI and OCI travellers ₹75,000
Eligible foreign national with a non-tourist visa and a stay exceeding six months ₹75,000
Tourist of foreign origin ₹25,000

These general allowances exclude infants. Crew members have separate provisions. Your passport alone may not establish the correct category; residence, origin and visa circumstances can matter.

Count other qualifying purchases too. If you buy a phone alongside a watch, headphones and gifts, do not calculate the allowance against the phone alone.

You also cannot combine two passengers’ allowances to cover one expensive iPhone. The rules expressly prohibit pooling allowances.

How Many iPhones Can You Bring From Dubai to India?

There is no universal “three iPhones are duty-free” rule. The baggage framework assesses the circumstances and value of the goods rather than providing an automatic phone quota.

Before travelling, make a simple inventory:

  • Which phone is your established everyday device?
  • Is another phone genuinely used for work?
  • Which devices were purchased during this trip?
  • Which phones will remain in India as gifts?
  • Are any intended for sale or delivery to customers?

This gives you a clearer basis for discussing the devices with Customs than simply saying that all of them are “personal phones.”

Can I Take Three iPhones From Dubai to India?

Three devices are not automatically prohibited, but clearance and exemption are not guaranteed merely because the number is three.

An established personal phone, a work phone and a newly purchased gift present different facts from three new phones intended for resale. Be prepared to explain ownership, purpose and value honestly.

CBIC’s 2026 passenger FAQs state that commercial quantities cannot be cleared as bona fide passenger baggage simply by paying duty. For a resale shipment, obtain advice about the proper import process before purchasing.

How Much Customs Duty Will I Pay for an iPhone?

For an ordinary new iPhone accepted as bona fide passenger baggage, the general baggage duty calculation is 35% of the assessable value exceeding your available allowance.

The underlying rate comes from Notification 26/2016-Customs, updated to refer to the 2026 rules by Notification 04/2026-Customs.

Why Do Some Websites Say 38.5%?

The older calculation added Social Welfare Surcharge to the 35% basic duty. Notification 07/2025-Customs added goods under baggage heading 9803 to the surcharge exemption. Do not automatically add the old surcharge to the examples below.

Example Duty Calculations

These examples assume eligibility for the ₹75,000 allowance, ordinary bona fide baggage treatment and the stated values accepted by Customs. They are illustrations, not current iPhone retail prices.

Qualifying new purchases Total assessed value Value above ₹75,000 Illustrative duty at 35%
One iPhone; no other purchases using the allowance ₹70,000 ₹0 ₹0
One iPhone; no other purchases using the allowance ₹1,00,000 ₹25,000 ₹8,750
One iPhone; no other purchases using the allowance ₹1,25,000 ₹50,000 ₹17,500
₹1,00,000 iPhone plus ₹20,000 of other qualifying purchases ₹1,20,000 ₹45,000 ₹15,750

Keep the Dubai invoice showing the model, price and currency. Ask Customs to explain the assessed rupee value and allowance used if your calculation differs from theirs. Do not assume a card-statement conversion will necessarily equal the customs valuation.

Can You Bring a Sealed iPhone Box to India?

A sealed box does not automatically turn a phone into a commercial import. It can be a genuine purchase or gift. However, the packaging makes it clear that the device is new; its value and intended use still need to be considered.

Equally, opening the box, inserting a SIM, signing into an Apple account or carrying the phone in your pocket does not create an automatic exemption.

The practical conclusion from the personal-effects rules is that the facts of the purchase matter more than where you pack the box. Do not rely on advice to separate or discard packaging as a way to remove a declaration obligation.

You can keep the packaging for protection, gifting or warranty records. See Sealed Phones to India: Customs Duty Rules.

How Do You Declare an iPhone at Indian Customs?

If you are carrying dutiable goods, submit the required baggage declaration and report to the Red Channel. The Green Channel is for passengers without goods requiring declaration.

The 2026 declaration regulations provide for electronic declarations through the customs system. The official ATITHI portal provides baggage-declaration services.

  1. Keep your purchase records accessible. Save an offline invoice copy, not only a link in your email.
  2. List the new goods you are carrying. Include other purchases using the same allowance.
  3. Explain the devices accurately. Identify existing personal phones separately from new purchases and gifts.
  4. Ask for help if uncertain. Approach Customs before choosing the Green Channel.
  5. Retain the assessment and payment receipt. Keep these with the phone’s purchase documents.

Non-declaration or a false declaration can lead to consequences beyond the original duty. Mumbai Customs’ arrival guidance explains the channel requirements.

What Are the Disadvantages of Buying an iPhone in Dubai?

1. Customs Duty Can Reduce the Saving

Compare the same model and storage capacity using the total cost you expect to pay:

Dubai purchase cost + currency/payment charges + Indian customs duty = estimated landed cost.

Then compare that figure with the actual Indian selling price, including any legitimate discounts available to you. A lower Dubai shelf price does not necessarily mean a lower final cost.

2. Some UAE Models Are eSIM-Only

Check the exact regional model before paying. For example, Apple’s official iPhone 17 announcement lists the UAE among markets receiving an eSIM-only version.

This does not mean every iPhone ever sold in Dubai lacks a SIM tray. Older models and stock originally intended for other markets can differ.

Apple lists eSIM support for Airtel, Jio and Vi in India. Confirm your specific plan’s activation requirements with the operator before switching devices. Our eSIM-only phone guide for India explains the travel considerations.

3. Indian Warranty Service Is Not an Automatic Promise

Apple’s warranty terms say it may restrict iPhone warranty service to the country where Apple or an authorised distributor originally sold the device.

That does not mean every Dubai phone will be refused service in India. It means you should verify service eligibility for the exact model rather than rely on a shop’s broad claim of “international warranty.” Keep the original invoice.

4. FaceTime and Regional Features Need Checking

Apple’s regional carrier-support page states that FaceTime is unavailable in the UAE and warns that it may remain unavailable on some devices originating there when used elsewhere.

Do not assume changing the phone’s region setting guarantees every feature. If FaceTime is important, ask Apple about the exact device before purchase.

5. Returns Can Be Inconvenient After You Leave Dubai

Ask the seller where a defective-device return, exchange or refund must be handled. A small saving may be less attractive if resolving a problem requires dealing with the original overseas shop.

Also verify that the handset is unlocked and that the invoice correctly identifies the product. “Dubai version” and “international version” are not substitutes for a model number and written terms.

How Many Phones Can You Bring on a Plane to India?

Airline battery limits and Indian customs allowances are separate checks. Permission to carry a device aboard does not make it duty-free on arrival.

For example, Emirates’ dangerous-goods policy permits up to 15 personal electronic devices within its specified conditions. That total includes devices such as laptops and tablets; it is not an allowance to import 15 iPhones into India tax-free.

Check your operating airline’s policy, including connecting flights. Keep valuable phones in your cabin bag where practical, protect them from damage, and follow the airline’s lithium-battery instructions.

Before Buying an iPhone in Dubai

  • Compare the exact model and storage capacity with Indian prices.
  • Calculate the possible duty alongside your other purchases.
  • Check whether the device uses eSIM only or also accepts a physical SIM.
  • Confirm it is unlocked and suitable for your Indian carrier.
  • Ask Apple about warranty service and regional features.
  • Get a proper invoice and save an offline copy.
  • Check the seller’s return arrangements before leaving Dubai.
  • Plan to declare the device if required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an iPhone Duty-Free in India?

It can be, depending on the circumstances. An established personal device and a new purchase are assessed differently. Use the allowance and calculation sections above rather than assuming every first phone is exempt.

Can I Bring an iPhone as a Gift?

A genuine gift is not automatically a commercial shipment, but calling it a gift does not remove its value from the baggage assessment. Keep the invoice and include it when reviewing your purchases.

Does Buying at Dubai Duty Free Remove Indian Customs Duty?

No. The shop’s duty-free status does not establish an Indian import exemption. Check your Indian passenger allowance independently.

Can I Bring My Old Phone and a New iPhone?

Prepare to distinguish the existing device from the new purchase. Keep relevant ownership and purchase records, and do not assume carrying both makes the new device automatically exempt.

Should I Buy in Dubai or India?

Buy in Dubai only after comparing the likely final cost, model differences and after-sales arrangements. If the saving becomes small after duty, an Indian purchase may be simpler.

Booking a Flight? Think Twice Before Paying for a Seat

Updated: October 01, 2026

You find a flight at a price you can live with. Then comes the seat map. The window costs extra. The aisle costs extra. Sitting near the front costs even more. After spending so much on the ticket, another payment can feel like the only way to finish the booking comfortably.

But before you choose that coloured square, ask one question: what happens to this money if my plans change?

Paying for a seat during booking can be worthwhile. It can also mean committing money months before you know whether you will take that flight. Your ticket and your seat-selection purchase may have different refund rules.

Paying for a seat when booking a flight

Should you pay for a seat when booking? Pay early when a particular seat matters enough to justify the cost and you understand the conditions. If your plans are uncertain and you can accept an allocated seat, consider waiting. Waiting does not guarantee a cheaper fee, a window seat or seats together.

You Have Bought a Flight. What Is the Seat Fee For?

For a passenger travelling on their own seat, the ticket covers carriage in the booked cabin. A separate seat-selection fee generally buys the ability to choose a particular position or seat category in advance.

Skipping paid seat selection does not mean you have bought a ticket without a seat. It means you may leave the choice to the airline, subject to its allocation process.

For example, IndiGo’s official fees page describes Seat Select as optional. Passengers can choose an available free seat or receive a seat allocation without a seat-selection charge at airport check-in.

The distinction matters when the booking screen makes almost every attractive option look like an extra purchase. Look for the option to skip selection, continue without choosing, or use an available complimentary seat.

Also check what the paid category actually includes. A preferred location near the front does not automatically mean extra legroom, a wider seat or a different cabin.

The “Small Extra” Can Become a Family Expense

Seat prices deserve the same attention as the airfare because they can multiply across passengers and flight segments.

Imagine four travellers taking a return trip with one connection in each direction. That is four flights per person. At an illustrative ₹750 per seat selection, the total becomes:

4 travellers × 4 flights × ₹750 = ₹12,000.

This is an example, not a quoted airline price. The point is to calculate the whole journey before deciding that each individual fee seems manageable.

You can also make different choices for different legs. Paying for your preferred seat on an overnight international flight may feel worthwhile, while accepting an allocated seat on a short connecting flight may suit your budget.

Compare the final fare, baggage and seating total using our airline ticket taxes and fees guide.

A Refundable Ticket Does Not Automatically Mean a Refundable Seat Fee

This is the detail worth checking before payment: the cancellation conditions for the ticket may not cover a separately purchased seat.

If you cancel voluntarily, you might receive a ticket refund or credit under your fare conditions while losing the seat-selection payment. Other airlines allow seat-fee refunds in specified circumstances.

The same caution applies to changing flights. A ticket advertised with no change fee may still involve a fare difference, and the seat payment might transfer only under particular conditions.

Before buying, find answers to these questions:

  • Will the seat fee be refunded if I cancel?
  • Is there a cancellation deadline?
  • Can the payment transfer if I change dates or routes?
  • What happens if an equivalent seat is unavailable?
  • Do I need to request the refund separately?

Save the terms displayed when you pay, alongside the receipt. For the cancellation angle in more detail, see our seat-fee refunds and the 24-hour cancellation rule guide.

Airlines Do Not All Treat Seat Fees the Same Way

These examples show why a blanket statement that “airlines never refund seat fees” would be misleading. Check the conditions for your own purchase, including the operating airline on a partner flight.

Airline What its published policy says What to check before paying
Air India Its preferred-seat policy provides for a full refund when the booking is cancelled at least 48 hours before departure. It also lists schedule changes, disruptions and inability to provide the selected or equivalent seat. The 48-hour deadline and the conditions applying to your seat product. Official policy.
British Airways Paid seating is generally non-refundable if you cancel voluntarily. Exceptions include airline cancellation and an airline-initiated seat change where you are dissatisfied with the replacement. Eligibility and the deadline to claim: generally within 30 days after the last flight in the itinerary. Official policy.
Lufthansa The published terms reviewed exclude refunds when you voluntarily cancel. Operational changes can qualify if the airline cannot provide the same seat category. Whether changing the route or flight affects transfer of the seat payment. Official policy.
IndiGo Seat Select is optional. Its fees page offers available free seats or free allocation at airport check-in when passengers do not purchase preferred seating. Whether you need paid selection at all, and the cancellation conditions attached to the specific add-on. Official fees page.

Policy examples checked on 1 October 2026. Booking conditions and applicable passenger-rights laws govern individual claims.

When Is Paying Early Worth It?

The sensible question is whether the benefit matters enough to you to justify committing the money now.

Your situation A practical approach
Your dates, visa or travel arrangements are uncertain Consider postponing non-refundable seat purchases until plans are firmer.
You are travelling alone and can accept any standard seat Check complimentary options or airline allocation before paying.
A particular aisle, window or extra-legroom seat matters on a long flight Booking early may be worth the cost. Read the seat description and refund terms.
You want a group to sit together Early selection may provide more choice. Check family-seating arrangements before purchasing seats for children.
You need seating related to a disability or assistance requirement Contact the airline’s assistance team before buying a seat product.
Your fare or frequent-flyer status may include seat selection Apply the relevant membership details and check included benefits before paying separately.

For families, do not assume that every passenger must buy an expensive seat to meet the airline’s child-seating arrangements. Equally, do not assume the entire family will automatically sit in one row. Ask what the airline provides for your child’s age and booking.

Our child flight ticket guide covers other family booking considerations.

Does waiting make seat selection cheaper?

Not necessarily. Waiting avoids committing the money immediately, but desirable seats may become unavailable. Some fares include seat choice at a later stage; others provide an allocation without allowing you to choose a preferred position for free.

Choose to wait because you are comfortable with that trade-off, not because someone promises a free upgrade or a guaranteed window seat at check-in.

You Paid for a Seat. Can the Airline Still Move You?

Yes. Aircraft substitutions, safety requirements and operational changes can affect seating. British Airways explicitly states that paid seating is not guaranteed, even after boarding.

The important distinction is between a different seat number and losing the feature you purchased. Moving between equivalent extra-legroom seats is different from being reassigned to a standard row.

Record both the original selection and the replacement. Explain the missing benefit in your claim rather than relying only on the fact that the number changed.

Emergency-exit seats need particular care. Airlines impose eligibility conditions, and buying one does not override those conditions. Air India warns that passengers who do not qualify may be moved without a refund.

How to Request a Seat-Fee Refund

  1. Keep the separate payment receipt. Save the booking reference, seat number, flight details and amount paid.
  2. Identify why a refund is due. Point to the cancellation provision or explain which paid seating benefit the airline failed to provide.
  3. Use the airline’s seat or ancillary-service refund process. Do not assume a ticket refund automatically includes every separate payment.
  4. Provide evidence. Include the original seat confirmation, replacement boarding pass and relevant cancellation or aircraft-change message.
  5. Request a written decision. If refused, ask which condition excludes the claim and retain the case number.

You can adapt this wording when it accurately describes your situation:

I paid [amount] for [seat category] on flight [number/date], booking reference [reference]. The airline changed my seating to [replacement], which did not provide [paid benefit]. Please review the attached receipt and boarding pass and refund the seat-selection charge under the applicable policy.

What if the airline refuses?

Escalate through the airline’s formal complaints process with the evidence and policy wording. For a service-not-provided dispute, ask your card issuer whether a payment dispute is available and what deadline applies. A chargeback is not a guaranteed refund or a way to cancel an otherwise valid non-refundable purchase.

If the airline has met its published conditions and you simply changed your mind, a goodwill request may be more appropriate than alleging a breach.

Flight Cancellation and Refund Questions

How can I get a 100% refund on flight cancellation?

There is no universal trick. A fully refundable fare, an applicable cancellation window or a qualifying airline disruption may provide a refund entitlement. Check separately whether the refund includes seat fees and other extras.

For flights to, from or within the United States, DOT rules require a refund after airline cancellation or a qualifying significant change when you decline the affected flight, alternative transportation and compensation offers. Timing thresholds include arrival delays of at least three hours for domestic itineraries or six hours for international itineraries. They are not worldwide rules for every flight.

DOT also requires refunds for paid optional services unavailable through no fault of the passenger. See the official refund guidance.

Does cancelling within 24 hours refund everything?

Do not assume so. For covered U.S. bookings made directly with an airline at least seven days before departure, the federal requirement permits a 24-hour hold or a penalty-free cancellation option. The airline is not required to offer both, and the airline requirement does not automatically extend to travel-agent bookings.

Verify the treatment of separately purchased seats before paying. Read the DOT ticket-buying guidance and the conditions shown by your booking provider.

What are good reasons to request a flight refund?

Start with an entitlement: your fare permits cancellation, the airline has cancelled or materially changed the journey under applicable rules, or a paid service was not supplied. Explain the actual circumstances and provide evidence.

Illness, bereavement and other personal emergencies may qualify under a specific airline waiver or insurance policy, but they do not automatically make every ticket and seat fee refundable.

Which airline has the best cancellation policy?

Compare the exact fare and extras, not just the airline’s name. The same airline may sell both restrictive and flexible tickets, with separate rules for seat selection.

Whether you are comparing Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air India, IndiGo or another carrier, ask for the amount you would recover if you cancelled on a particular date. Check whether that means money returned, a travel credit or only selected charges.

Our India flight ticket refund guide explains the wider ticket question.

Before You Click “Pay for Seats”

Ask yourself: Would I still buy this seat today if I knew I might lose the payment when my plans change?

If the comfort, location or ability to sit together makes the answer yes, buy with the conditions understood. If you are paying only because the booking screen makes selection feel compulsory, pause and check the alternatives.
