Australia to India Travel Guide: Baggage, Customs, Phones and Airport Tips

Updated: October 21, 2026

Travelling from Australia to India involves more than booking an international flight. Your onward domestic ticket may include less baggage, your Australian phone plan may trigger roaming charges, and gifts or jewellery may need customs attention. Returning to Australia brings another set of checks, particularly for food, purchases and outdoor equipment.

Whether you are leaving Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or another Australian city, use this guide to plan the whole journey: booking, packing, connections, customs, internet access and the ride from the airport.

Start with the sections relevant to your trip, then follow the detailed guides for specific questions.

Australia to India: What Should You Check First?

Travel question What to check Why it matters
Does my baggage allowance cover the whole journey? Weight, piece count and cabin limits for every flight. A separately booked Indian domestic flight may have a smaller allowance.
Are my connecting flights protected? Whether the journey is ticketed as a connection or sold as a self-transfer. A delay on one ticket can leave you responsible for replacing a separate onward ticket.
Can I connect immediately after landing? Roaming eligibility, travel eSIM setup or another working data option. Airport Wi-Fi and local SIM activation should not be your only arrival plan.
Do my purchases need declaring? Passenger category, item-specific restrictions and current customs allowances. Airline baggage allowance and customs duty-free allowance are separate.
How will I leave the airport? Confirmed pickup location, vehicle size and payment method. A tired family with several suitcases needs a workable transfer plan.
What will I bring back to Australia? Biosecurity restrictions and customs concessions. Food, gifts and shopping need planning in both directions.

Choosing Flights From Australia to India

Compare the total journey rather than the advertised fare alone. A cheaper ticket can become more expensive after checked baggage, seat selection, an overnight stop or a separate domestic connection.

For departures from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, compare the services actually available on your travel dates. Do not assume that every Australian city has a nonstop flight to your intended Indian destination.

Compare These Details Before Paying

  • Final destination: arriving closer to family may save a domestic flight and another baggage charge.
  • Operating airline: the airline flying the aircraft matters for onboard services and cabin baggage.
  • Connection type: one booking reference alone does not always establish protection; check for “self-transfer” wording.
  • Airport and terminal changes: identify any ground transfer before booking.
  • Arrival time: consider hotel access, family pickup and onward travel after a long flight.
  • Change conditions: check who handles changes if you book through a travel website.

Travelling during school holidays? Compare nearby dates using the school calendar for your Australian state or territory. Include baggage and connection costs when comparing fares for the whole family.

Connecting Through Another Country

Check transit requirements for your passport and itinerary, especially if you must collect baggage, change airports or leave the transit area overnight. A connection sold online does not guarantee that you can complete it without additional documents.

If your route passes through the Middle East, consult current airline notices and Smartraveller, including advice for the transit country. Our Middle East flight guide explains what to check before deciding whether to change your route.

Baggage Allowances: Check Every Flight

There is no single Australia-to-India baggage allowance. Your entitlement depends on the airline, fare, cabin, route and ticket conditions. Read both the permitted number of bags and the weight allowed for each bag.

An allowance expressed as “two pieces” is different from a total weight allowance. Likewise, a checked-baggage entitlement does not increase the weight or size permitted in the cabin.

The International-to-Domestic Baggage Mismatch

A common problem is packing for the international flight and overlooking a separately purchased flight within India.

Illustrative example: if your international ticket permits a 23 kg checked bag but your separate domestic ticket includes 15 kg, you have an 8 kg difference to resolve. These figures are an example, not a universal allowance.

Check for eligible international-connection baggage products before paying airport rates. Air India Express, for example, publishes an international-connection baggage option; eligibility and purchase conditions apply.

Read 23 kg international, 15 kg domestic: the baggage problem for NRIs.

Pack Your Cabin Bag for the Strictest Flight

Check the dimensions, weight and personal-item rules for every operating airline. Keep documents, essential medicines and valuables accessible. Power banks and spare lithium batteries belong in cabin baggage, subject to the airline’s restrictions.

If a device becomes unusually hot, swollen or starts smoking, alert the crew immediately. See what to do if your power bank starts smoking on a flight.

Indian Customs: Gifts, Electronics and Jewellery

Permission to check a bag onto a flight does not mean everything inside is duty-free. Customs considers your eligibility, the goods you bring, their value and any applicable restrictions.

Which General Allowance Applies?

India’s 2026 baggage framework lists a ₹75,000 general allowance for residents, tourists of Indian origin, and foreigners holding a valid visa other than a tourist visa. It lists ₹25,000 for tourists of foreign origin. These are subject to the rules, exclusions and eligibility conditions; they are not blanket exemptions for every item.

An Australian passport alone therefore does not tell you which category applies. Refer to the official 2026 baggage-rules summary and CBIC’s international traveller resources.

Phones, Laptops and Gifts

Keep purchase invoices and evidence of ownership for valuable items. Distinguish your existing travel belongings from additional purchases, gifts or goods intended for sale.

Removing packaging does not change a new purchase into an exempt personal effect. Declare goods where required and ask customs for guidance if you are unsure.

Gold Jewellery You Intend to Take Back

Document valuable jewellery before leaving Australia using photographs, receipts, valuations or other ownership records. Ask about the appropriate temporary-import or re-export procedure when bringing valuable items into India for a visit.

Jewellery has separate eligibility rules. Gold bars and coins should not be treated as ordinary personal jewellery, and wearing a newly purchased item does not automatically remove a declaration requirement.

Keep the two borders separate: evidence that an item belongs to you may be useful, but it does not replace the customs requirements of either India or Australia.

Explore the India import rules hub for goods requiring more detailed checks.

Documents to Check Before Leaving Australia

Your requirements depend on your citizenship and travel status, not simply where you live. An Australian citizen travelling on an Australian passport has different requirements from an Indian citizen returning to India.

  • Check passport validity and the spelling of every traveller’s name on the booking.
  • Confirm the applicable Indian visa or OCI documentation for foreign-passport holders.
  • Check transit-country requirements for the actual connection.
  • Verify your documents for returning to Australia, including relevant visa travel rights if you are not an Australian citizen.
  • Check children’s documents individually rather than assuming they are covered by a parent’s status.

Use Smartraveller’s India entry guidance and the relevant official Indian services for current requirements.

Keep an offline backup: save your itinerary, insurance details, accommodation address and emergency contacts. Carry the original documents required for travel; a photograph on your phone is not a universal substitute.

Using Your Australian Phone in India

Plan separately for mobile data and keeping your Australian number available. A travel data eSIM can provide internet without receiving calls or banking texts sent to your Australian number.

Option Main advantage What to check
Australian carrier roaming Uses your existing number and service. India eligibility, daily charges, activation triggers and prepaid/postpaid differences.
Travel eSIM Can provide arrival data without visiting a shop. Phone compatibility, network coverage, activation timing and whether the plan is data-only.
Indian SIM or eSIM Can provide a local connection for a longer stay. Visitor eligibility, identity verification, activation process and handset support.
Wi-Fi Useful at accommodation and some airports. Login requirements, reliability and whether access needs an SMS code.

Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and Other Providers

Check your exact plan rather than relying on the network name. Prepaid services and smaller providers using a major network can have different overseas conditions.

Keeping Your Australian Number for Banking OTPs

Before departure, ask your provider whether your service can receive SMS in India and what roaming settings are required. Check your bank’s alternative verification methods, and set up supported app-based approvals before travelling.

If using a second SIM for data, select that line for mobile data and disable automatic data switching where appropriate. Follow the travel eSIM provider’s roaming instructions; some travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled on their own line.

Turning off data roaming does not necessarily prevent all roaming charges. Calls, outgoing messages or other chargeable activity can still matter. Airplane mode, meanwhile, normally disconnects cellular service, so do not expect ordinary roaming SMS to arrive while it is enabled.

Your existing WhatsApp account can generally continue over a working internet connection. Avoid changing its registered number merely because you temporarily use a different data SIM.

Landing in India and Catching a Domestic Flight

Before leaving Australia, ask where you will clear immigration and customs, whether you must collect your bags, and which terminal handles the next flight.

On many international-to-domestic itineraries, you need time for border formalities, baggage collection and another bag drop. However, special transfer arrangements exist. Air India’s Easy Connect programme has different procedures for eligible services. Follow the instructions for your exact itinerary.

Do Not Judge a Connection by Departure Times Alone

A domestic flight leaving three hours after your international arrival does not give you three hours to reach check-in. You must account for landing delays, walking, queues, baggage, terminal transfers and the onward airline’s check-in deadline.

For separate tickets, consider a generous buffer or overnight stay, especially with children, older relatives or an airport change. A minimum connection time is not a comfort guarantee for a self-transfer.

Ask at your first check-in: “Where are my bags tagged to, where must I collect them, and where do I complete immigration and customs?” Keep the baggage receipts and follow the confirmed instructions.

Airport Transfers: Plan the Last Part of the Journey

For arrivals in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi or another city, arrange a transfer that fits your arrival time, passengers and luggage.

  • Use the airport’s official transport information, an authorised taxi service, a verified app pickup or a confirmed hotel transfer.
  • Check the vehicle registration and driver details before boarding.
  • Save the destination address and booking details offline.
  • Confirm whether tolls, parking or waiting charges are included.
  • Book a vehicle large enough for your suitcases and any stroller.
  • Keep a payment backup if your phone or international card does not work.

Public transport may suit some journeys, but consider stairs, transfers, operating hours and luggage before choosing it after a long flight. If your next flight uses a different airport, plan the full road transfer rather than treating it as an ordinary terminal change.

For solo travellers and women arriving late: share your confirmed ride details with someone you trust, wait in a staffed area and verify any unexpected change of driver through the booking service.

For travel beyond the airport, see our India backpacking and safety guide.

Families, Older Travellers and Health Preparation

Build the itinerary around the travellers who need the most time. A connection that works for a solo adult may be difficult with a stroller, several bags or mobility assistance.

  • Request airline assistance in advance and confirm arrangements for connections.
  • Check infant baggage and stroller conditions with each operating airline.
  • Keep essential medicines in original labelled packaging with relevant prescriptions.
  • Check destination and transit restrictions for any controlled medicine.
  • Arrange travel insurance before departure and verify its start time, medical conditions and disruption cover.
  • Discuss trip-specific health preparation with a qualified clinician before travelling.

Keep an accessible change of clothes and immediate essentials in cabin baggage in case checked bags are delayed.

Returning to Australia: Food, Shopping and Jewellery

Plan your return packing before accepting gifts or buying food. Something sold legally in India is not automatically permitted into Australia.

Food and Biosecurity

Check Australian conditions for food, animal products, plants and seeds before packing. Commercial packaging does not automatically remove declaration requirements. Outdoor footwear and equipment may also need cleaning and declaration if contaminated or used in relevant environments.

Complete the arrival declaration accurately. Declaring an item allows officers to assess it; it does not guarantee admission. Use the Australian government’s bringing-goods guidance for the specific item.

New Purchases and Existing Valuables

Australian Border Force lists a general-goods concession of AUD900 for adults and AUD450 for travellers under 18, subject to conditions. Check how your new purchases fit the rules, including jewellery and electronics.

Keep evidence of prior ownership for valuable belongings you took out of Australia. If you claimed an Australian Tourist Refund Scheme refund and are bringing the goods back, check the separate declaration requirements.

See Australian Border Force’s duty-free guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much baggage can I take from Australia to India?

Your ticket determines the allowance. Check weight, number of pieces and cabin limits for every segment, particularly a separately booked domestic flight in India.

Does my international allowance apply to a domestic connection in India?

Not automatically. Check the ticketed allowance and any eligible international-connection baggage offer. Separate bookings may have different limits.

Can I use my Australian phone in India?

Usually, if the handset and service are compatible. Compare roaming, a travel eSIM and a local connection, and check whether the phone is unlocked before using another provider.

Will a travel eSIM receive my Australian banking OTPs?

A data-only travel eSIM will not receive SMS addressed to your Australian number. Keep an eligible Australian service available or arrange a bank-supported alternative.

Can I buy an Indian SIM immediately after landing?

Availability, visitor eligibility and activation times vary. Check the provider’s identity requirements and have backup internet access for your arrival.

Do I collect my bags at the first Indian airport?

This is common on international-to-domestic transfers, but some eligible services use different procedures. Confirm the collection point and customs process for your itinerary.

Does every Australian traveller get the same Indian duty-free allowance?

No. Passenger category and the goods being carried matter. An Australian passport by itself does not establish the applicable customs entitlement.

Can I bring Indian sweets, spices or snacks back to Australia?

Check each product’s ingredients and current Australian import conditions. Declare relevant goods as required; sealed packaging does not guarantee permission.
