Importing into India: Customs Rules, Duties and Permits

Updated: September 29, 2026

Planning to bring a vehicle, gold, alcohol, a pet or another item into India? Start with the guide for your item and the way it will enter the country. Passenger baggage, international parcels, cargo shipments and temporary imports can involve different requirements.

This India import hub brings together our guides to customs duty, declarations, permits and supporting documents. It is designed for travellers, returning NRIs and people arranging personal imports.

Importing into India

Start with permission, then calculate the cost. An item being available overseas does not establish that you can import it into India. For regulated items, paying customs duty does not replace an import permit, technical approval or other required clearance.

Start Here: What Are You Bringing into India?

Item or question Guide to read What to establish first
Car Importing a car to India Import eligibility, technical requirements and registration.
Motorcycle or bike Motorcycle import rules New or used status, customs costs and road registration.
Gold or silver Gold and silver customs guide The form of the item, passenger eligibility and declaration requirements.
Alcohol Alcohol allowances and customs duty Passenger allowance, excess quantities and other applicable restrictions.

Firearm Firearm import rules Import authorisation, licensing and transport requirements.
Walkie-talkie Walkie-talkie and WPC guidance The device’s frequency, specifications and applicable approvals.
Customs charges India customs tariff guide The item category and whether baggage or another import procedure applies.

Importing Cars and Motorcycles into India

Vehicle imports involve more than booking a shipping container. Before purchasing overseas, establish whether the exact vehicle can be imported and which documents will be needed to register it in India.

Cars and Passenger Automobiles

Start with our Importing a Car to India: Rules, Duty and Process guide. Use it to plan questions about vehicle eligibility, customs clearance, technical compliance and the costs beyond the overseas purchase price.

Motorcycles and Bikes

Our Motorcycle Import Guide covers new and used bikes, customs-duty calculations, shipping, registration and vintage-motorcycle considerations.

If you are considering a particular model, first check whether it is already sold through an authorised Indian dealer. Compare the Indian on-road quotation with the complete cost of importing and registering it yourself.

Bringing Gold, Silver and Alcohol into India

Gold Jewellery, Gold Bars and Silver

Use our Gold and Silver Customs Guide to understand the distinctions between personal jewellery, newly purchased jewellery, bullion and other forms of precious metal.

The relevant questions include what you are carrying, your eligibility, the quantity and whether a declaration or duty payment is required. Keep purchase and ownership records available where relevant.

Alcohol and Duty-Free Purchases

Read the Alcohol Allowances and Import Duty Guide before buying bottles for your trip.

A purchase from an overseas duty-free shop is not automatically exempt from Indian customs requirements. Check the arrival allowance and how excess quantities are treated. Airline carriage requirements and local alcohol restrictions are separate considerations.

Bringing Pets to India

Arrange a pet’s entry documents before confirming travel. The animal’s species, your circumstances and the transport arrangements can affect the process.

Our Importing Pets to India: Rules, Documents and Costs guide is the starting point for planning veterinary paperwork, required clearances and arrival procedures.

Confirm both the Indian entry requirements and the operating airline’s acceptance conditions. An airline reservation for your pet does not, by itself, establish permission to enter India.

Firearms and Wireless Equipment

Importing Firearms

Read the Firearm Import Rules, Duties and Legal Guide before making purchase or transport arrangements. It covers the interaction between import controls, arms licensing and customs requirements.

Returning residents can also read our Transfer of Residence: Importing Guns to India guide. Treat the relocation question as part of the assessment; do not assume that returning permanently automatically authorises a firearm import.

Can You Import an Air Gun into India? Air Rifle, Air Pistol and Customs Rules

Walkie-Talkies and Radio Equipment

Check the exact device specifications before bringing wireless equipment bought overseas. Read Can You Bring Walkie-Talkies to India? for guidance on frequencies, WPC requirements and travel considerations.

A device sold for unrestricted use in another country should not be assumed to have the same status in India.

Postal Shipments and Customs Declarations

International mail requires a different approach from items carried in a passenger’s suitcase. Before posting goods, identify the applicable postal service, declaration requirements and destination restrictions.

Our India Post Customs Declaration Form CN22 and CN23 Guide explains descriptions, values and supporting information for postal declarations.

This guide primarily covers sending international parcels through India Post. For a parcel sent to India from overseas, the sender should follow the originating postal operator’s instructions and check Indian import requirements. Courier and freight shipments may use different documentation.

Customs Duty and Currency Rules

Understanding Customs Charges

Start with our India Customs Tariff and Import Duty Guide. The amount payable depends on the item and applicable import procedure; there is no single percentage that covers every item in this hub.

When requesting a quotation, ask which taxes, clearance costs and delivery charges are included. A shipping quotation may exclude customs duty, storage, inspections and local handling.

Carrying Cash and Foreign Currency

Currency has its own rules. Use our Foreign Exchange Rules for India Travel to check the treatment of foreign currency, Indian rupees and declarations.

Keep currency questions separate from the customs valuation of goods you purchase or bring with you.

Before You Buy, Pack or Ship

  1. Identify the item precisely. Record the model, quantity, condition and specifications where relevant.
  2. Identify the route. Will it arrive in your baggage, by post, through a courier or as cargo?
  3. Check permission first. Establish whether a permit, technical approval, health certificate or other clearance is required.
  4. Read the item-specific guide. Avoid applying a general baggage allowance to every category.
  5. Prepare supporting documents. These may include invoices, ownership records, licences or certificates.
  6. Calculate the full cost. Include transport, customs charges, clearance and any registration or inspection expenses.
  7. Confirm arrangements before dispatch. Resolve document and entry-point questions before the item is in transit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Importing into India

Are passenger baggage rules the same as cargo import rules?

No. The way an item enters India matters. Do not assume that an allowance available to an eligible arriving passenger applies to a parcel or cargo shipment.

Can I bring a restricted item if I declare it and pay duty?

Declaration and duty payment do not replace a required authorisation. Read the guide for the item and establish the applicable permission before arranging transport.

Does “for personal use” mean duty-free?

No. Personal use alone does not establish an exemption. Eligibility depends on the relevant item category, allowance and import conditions.

Does Transfer of Residence cover everything I own overseas?

Do not assume it does. Check the provisions for each item, especially vehicles, firearms and other regulated goods. Ownership abroad and permission to import are separate questions.

Which guide should I read first?

Start with the item-specific guide in the table above. Then use the customs tariff guide for the duty framework and the relevant transport or declaration guide for the way your item will arrive.
