Yes, you can import a motorcycle into India, provided the bike and its import route meet the applicable requirements. However, paying customs duty is only part of the process. You must also establish that the motorcycle can legally be imported and obtain the documents needed for Indian registration.
A cheap overseas purchase can become expensive once shipping, customs duty, import GST, testing, port charges and state road tax are included. Used and antique motorcycles require particular care because age, certification and import-policy conditions can affect eligibility.
In this guide, “bike” means a motorcycle, as commonly used in India. Bicycles have different tariff classifications and requirements.
Before paying a seller: Send the motorcycle’s VIN, manufacturing date, engine capacity, country of manufacture, registration history and technical documents to an Indian customs broker experienced in vehicle imports. Establish the import route and registration requirements before booking shipment.

Which Motorcycle Import Route Applies to You?
| Your situation | What to establish first |
|---|---|
| Buying a new motorcycle overseas | Whether the exact model meets the applicable import and technical requirements. |
| Bringing a motorcycle already registered abroad | Used-vehicle eligibility, age limits, certification and any applicable authorisation. |
| Returning to India permanently | Whether a specific policy exception applies to your motorcycle and circumstances. |
| Bringing an antique or collector’s bike | The legal import route for that motorcycle, separately from vintage registration. |
| Visiting India and taking the bike out again | Temporary admission, carnet requirements and the permitted re-export deadline. |
Shipping a motorcycle with your household belongings does not automatically make it duty-free baggage. Obtain a vehicle-specific assessment rather than relying on a general relocation quotation.
Rules for Importing New and Used Motorcycles into India
New motorcycles
The standard vehicle-import framework includes a speedometer showing kilometres per hour, headlamp suitability for keep-left traffic, import from the country of manufacture and compliance with applicable Indian vehicle rules. The steering-position requirement for cars expressly excludes two- and three-wheelers.
Foreign registration can change the bike’s treatment: a low-mileage demonstrator may qualify as used rather than new. Check its documented history, not just the seller’s description.
Used motorcycles
Under the standard used-vehicle conditions, vehicles must generally be no more than three years old from manufacture. Requirements also address pre-shipment certification, testing before clearance, roadworthiness and servicing support. Used imports have specific port restrictions.
These requirements come from the DGFT vehicle-import framework, which must be read with subsequent amendments and any applicable exception. Confirm the current Chapter 87 conditions and permitted entry port before shipping.
Are motorcycles of 800cc or more treated differently?
A DGFT notification concerning new motorcycles of 800cc or more provides a particular certification route involving European approval documents. This does not mean that any large motorcycle can enter without technical checks.
That notification contains older emissions references. Have the applicable testing agency confirm which approvals and emissions evidence are acceptable for your exact model on the intended import date.
Can returning NRIs import a used bike under Transfer of Residence?
Do not assume that being an NRI, or owning a motorcycle abroad for two years, automatically creates permission to import it. Ask the broker to identify the precise policy provision being relied upon, its conditions and whether it covers motorcycles.
A relocation concession, an exception to an import condition and a customs-duty exemption are different things. Request a written explanation of each claimed benefit.
What Are the Import Taxes on Motorcycles?
An imported motorcycle can attract several charges:
- Basic Customs Duty (BCD): Depends on the applicable tariff entry and exemption.
- Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC): Relevant to certain imports, including the standard used-motorcycle treatment below.
- Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS): Applies unless exempt.
- Integrated GST (IGST): Charged on import using the applicable GST rate and duty-inclusive taxable value.
Standard motorcycle customs-duty framework
The following rates reflect the motorcycle changes announced in the Finance Ministry’s 2025 customs explanatory memorandum. They are a starting point for a quotation, not an all-inclusive tax percentage or a guarantee of the rate on a future shipment.
| Motorcycle category | Basic Customs Duty | Additional treatment |
|---|---|---|
| New petrol CBU in the lower engine-capacity bracket, such as a 650cc motorcycle | 40% | Applicable SWS and IGST are additional. |
| New petrol CBU above 1,600cc | 30% | Applicable SWS and IGST are additional. |
| Qualifying new semi-knocked-down import | 20% | Must meet the tariff definition for that assembly condition. |
| Qualifying new completely knocked-down import | 10% | Must meet the tariff definition for that assembly condition. |
| Used motorcycle under the standard treatment described in the memorandum | 70% | 40% AIDC, nil SWS, plus applicable IGST. |
CBU means a completely built unit. The lower CKD and SKD rates are not a simple personal-import workaround: removing a wheel or shipping a motorcycle in pieces does not establish eligibility.
For a motorcycle recorded at exactly 1,600cc, have the broker confirm the applicable notification wording. Electric motorcycles also require a separate classification assessment.
Is there a 40% GST rate on bikes in India?
Yes, for motorcycles with engine capacity exceeding 350cc. Under the GST changes effective from 22 September 2025, motorcycles up to and including 350cc attract 18%, while those exceeding 350cc attract 40%. See the government’s motorcycle GST explanation.
For imports, this is collected as IGST. It is not the entire import-tax bill. Customs duty and applicable levies are separate, and IGST is calculated on a value that includes the relevant customs charges.
How Do You Calculate Motorcycle Import Duty?
Start with the customs assessable value. This involves the vehicle value, freight, insurance and other adjustments required by customs valuation rules. The customs exchange rate can differ from the exchange rate used by your bank.
The general calculation is:
- Establish the customs assessable value.
- Calculate Basic Customs Duty.
- Add applicable AIDC and SWS.
- Calculate IGST on the relevant duty-inclusive value.
- Add local clearance, testing, transport and registration expenses.
The Institute of Cost Accountants of India’s customs study material explains this duty-inclusive calculation method.
Example: a new 650cc motorcycle with a ₹5 lakh assessable value
This illustration assumes 40% BCD, SWS at 10% of BCD, no AIDC and 40% IGST. It assumes no preferential concession or other exemption.
| Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Customs assessable value | ₹5,00,000 |
| BCD: 40% of ₹5,00,000 | ₹2,00,000 |
| SWS: 10% of ₹2,00,000 | ₹20,000 |
| Value for IGST | ₹7,20,000 |
| IGST: 40% of ₹7,20,000 | ₹2,88,000 |
| Total import taxes | ₹5,08,000 |
| Assessable value plus import taxes | ₹10,08,000 |
The tax calculation alone more than doubles the assumed assessable value. Port charges, broker fees, testing, inland delivery, insurance and state registration costs remain additional. Do not add freight twice if it is already included in the assessable value.
How much does it cost to import a used bike?
A lower purchase price does not necessarily produce a lower overall cost. Used motorcycles can face higher import levies and additional certification expenses.
For example, applying the standard used-bike assumptions of 70% BCD, 40% AIDC, nil SWS and 40% IGST to an assessable value of ₹5 lakh produces approximately ₹9.70 lakh in import taxes. The assessable value plus taxes becomes ₹14.70 lakh before local expenses.
This is an illustration for a bike exceeding 350cc, not a quotation or confirmation that the bike is eligible for import. Customs must also accept the declared valuation.
Importing a Motorcycle from the USA
The cost of importing a bike from the USA depends on more than its advertised dollar price. Ask for a complete estimate covering collection from the seller, export documentation, packing, ocean or air transport, insurance, Indian clearance and delivery.
Check the country of manufacture as well as the country of purchase. A Japanese-brand motorcycle bought in America was not necessarily manufactured there. A US-market version may also have different lighting, instruments or certification documents from an India-market model.
Are there import taxes on Harley-Davidson motorcycles?
Yes—do not assume that a Harley-Davidson is exempt because it is an American brand. The applicable treatment depends on engine capacity, condition, assembly status, origin and any valid concession.
A new 1,868cc motorcycle and a used 883cc motorcycle can therefore have very different tax calculations. An India-manufactured model bought locally is also a different transaction from personally importing a US-market bike.
If a seller mentions a trade agreement or “zero-duty” announcement, ask the broker for the implementing customs notification and proof that your motorcycle qualifies. A brand name or shipment from the USA does not establish preferential origin.
What Is the Cheapest Way to Ship a Motorcycle to India?
For a non-urgent shipment, request a sea-freight quotation first and compare shared-container and dedicated-container options. Ask whether the carrier accepts motorcycles under any roll-on/roll-off service offered on that route. Obtain an air-freight quotation if speed matters.
Compare the total cost through Indian delivery, not just the overseas freight charge. A low headline quotation can exclude significant destination expenses.
- Collection, crating and loading
- Export processing and terminal charges
- Freight and marine or air-cargo insurance
- Indian port and container-handling charges
- Customs brokerage and examinations
- Testing or compliance work
- Storage and demurrage if clearance is delayed
- Transport from the port to your destination
There is no dependable universal USA-to-India motorcycle shipping price. Request an itemised quotation using the packed dimensions, weight, origin city, permitted destination port and expected shipment date.
Documents and Registration in India
Prepare the import file before shipment
Depending on the import route, your file may include:
- Purchase invoice or bill of sale and payment evidence
- Foreign title and registration history, where applicable
- VIN, engine number, manufacturing date and technical specifications
- Passport, identity and address documents
- Bill of lading or air waybill, packing list and insurance documents
- Applicable DGFT authorisation or evidence supporting a claimed exception
- Required type-approval, conformity and testing certificates
- Bill of Entry, duty-payment records and customs clearance documents
Resolve any outstanding ownership or lender issue with the overseas seller before arranging export.
Does customs clearance mean you can ride the bike immediately?
No. Customs release and road registration are separate steps. Establish the requirements with the registering authority in your state before purchase.
The official permanent-registration checklist includes the registration application, sales and roadworthiness documentation, insurance, address evidence and customs documents for imported vehicles.
Ask your RTO which documents it requires for this particular import, including Form 20, applicable Form 21/Form 22 documentation, inspection evidence and customs clearance records. Budget separately for state motor-vehicle tax, registration fees and insurance.
Can You Import an Antique or Vintage Motorcycle into India?
Do not assume an old motorcycle becomes freely importable simply because it is described as “classic” or “vintage.”
India’s vintage-registration framework covers qualifying two- and four-wheelers that have completed 50 years from first registration and meet the originality requirements. However, registration eligibility does not itself establish permission to import.
The distinction matters because DGFT Notification 58/2024-25, issued in February 2025, expressly describes cars in its vintage-import relaxation.
Do not automatically extend that wording to an antique Harley-Davidson, BSA, Norton or other motorcycle. Obtain confirmation of the motorcycle-specific import route, then establish the appropriate registration category and permitted use.
A bike being 25 or 30 years old does not, by itself, establish eligibility under India’s vintage-registration framework.
Can You Bring Your Motorcycle for a Temporary Trip?
A motorcycle brought for a visit and taken out of India again follows a different route from a permanent import.
A Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) is a customs document used for temporary vehicle admission in participating countries. It provides a guarantee relating to customs charges if the vehicle is not re-exported as required. The FIA’s CPD guidance explains its purpose.
Before travel, confirm Indian admission requirements, the issuing association’s deposit or guarantee, insurance and the re-export deadline. Do not assume the carnet’s printed validity period is the same as the stay permitted by Indian Customs.
Temporary admission is not permission to leave the motorcycle in India permanently or sell it locally.
Which Motorcycles Are Already Officially Imported into India?
Several premium motorcycles are already imported into India by their manufacturers or authorised distributors. You can purchase these through the official Indian dealership network without arranging overseas shipping and customs clearance yourself.
These motorcycles enter as Completely Built-Up units (CBUs)—complete motorcycles manufactured overseas. Examples confirmed in the manufacturers’ Indian product information and announcements include:
| Brand | Officially imported models | Motorcycle category |
|---|---|---|
| Aprilia | RSV4 Factory, RS 660 | Sport motorcycles |
| Aprilia | Tuono 660, Tuareg 660 | Roadster and adventure |
| BMW Motorrad | S 1000 RR, M 1000 RR | Sport motorcycles |
| BMW Motorrad | S 1000 R, M 1000 R | Roadsters |
| BMW Motorrad | R 1300 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, F 900 GS, F 900 GS Adventure | Adventure motorcycles |
| BMW Motorrad | K 1600 GTL, K 1600 B, R 18 Transcontinental | Touring motorcycles |
| BMW Motorrad | R 12, R 12 nineT | Cruiser and heritage motorcycles |

Can I Import an Aprilia RSV4 Motorcycle into India?
The Aprilia RSV4 Factory is already offered through Aprilia’s official Indian dealership network as a CBU import. If you want to buy one for use in India, obtain an Indian dealer quotation before arranging a personal import.
If you already own an RSV4 overseas, or want a particular version unavailable locally, establish whether that exact motorcycle qualifies for import. Its manufacturing date, registration history, technical specification and supporting certificates matter. Official sales of the RSV4 in India do not automatically establish eligibility for every overseas version or used example.
Should You Buy an Officially Imported Bike or Import One Yourself?
Compare the dealer’s on-road price with the full cost of personally importing and registering the motorcycle. An overseas advertised price alone is not a useful comparison.
- Official Indian purchase: Ask for an itemised quotation, delivery date, warranty terms, registration charges and service arrangements.
- Personal import: Include overseas purchase costs, shipping, insurance, customs charges, testing, clearance, inland delivery and Indian registration.
- Ownership support: Confirm whether the Indian dealer will service the overseas specification and whether its warranty is valid in India.
Before importing a specific model, check whether it is already sold officially in India. A local purchase may simplify the process considerably. Personal import requires a separate assessment even when the same model name appears in an Indian showroom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I import a motorcycle for personal use?
Potentially, yes. Personal use does not remove the applicable vehicle-import conditions, customs charges or registration requirements. Establish eligibility for the exact motorcycle first.
Can I import any motorcycle if I pay enough duty?
No. Paying duty does not cure an import restriction, missing approval or failure to meet vehicle standards.
Is a used motorcycle cheaper to import?
Not necessarily. Higher levies, testing costs and eligibility issues can outweigh the saving on its purchase price.
Does the same rule apply to Honda, BMW, Ducati and Harley-Davidson?
The assessment depends on the motorcycle’s specifications, condition, origin and import route. Brand alone does not determine permission or the total tax bill.
Can I import a motorcycle unavailable in India?
Possibly, but obtain the certification and registration requirements before buying. Availability of spare parts, diagnostic support and a local warranty should also influence the decision.
How do I get a realistic final price?
Request three written estimates: shipping through destination delivery, customs and clearance, and compliance plus state registration. Compare their combined total with an equivalent motorcycle already available in India.
