Using Your Canadian Phone in India: Roaming, eSIM and OTPs

Updated: October 03, 2026

You can generally use an unlocked Canadian iPhone or compatible Android phone in India. The bigger decision is how to get affordable internet while keeping access to your Canadian number for calls, banking messages and one-time passwords (OTPs).

For many travellers, a practical setup is to keep the Canadian line active for essential messages and use a separate travel eSIM or Indian connection for data. However, this only works as intended if your Canadian provider supports service in India and you understand which activities trigger roaming charges.

Using Your Canadian Phone in India

This guide covers Bell, Rogers, TELUS, Freedom Mobile and other Canadian brands, with particular attention to bank OTPs, Wi-Fi calling and avoiding unexpected bills.

Three things to arrange before departure:

  • Internet: decide between included roaming, a travel pass, a travel eSIM or an Indian connection.
  • Your Canadian number: confirm whether it can receive calls and SMS in India.
  • Bank access: set up an approved alternative to SMS verification wherever your bank offers one.

A data-only travel eSIM does not automatically receive OTPs sent to your Canadian number.

Can You Use a Canadian iPhone in India?

Usually, yes. Check that the phone is unlocked, supports the Indian network you intend to use and can accept the SIM or eSIM required by that provider. Network registration, voice calling, 5G and Wi-Fi calling are separate compatibility questions; a working data connection does not guarantee every feature.

On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the phone is unlocked.

Canada’s Wireless Code requires providers to supply unlocked devices and unlock eligible locked devices without a fee. Nevertheless, check an older, refurbished or privately purchased phone before travelling. See the CRTC’s unlocking guidance.

What is different about a Canadian and an Indian iPhone?

The differences depend on the exact model and generation. Compare SIM support, cellular specifications and service eligibility rather than assuming every iPhone sold in a country has the same configuration.

For example, Apple lists the Canadian iPhone 17 as eSIM-only, while the Indian iPhone 17 supports nano-SIM and eSIM. A traveller with the Canadian version cannot insert a physical Indian SIM card.

Sources: Apple Canada iPhone 17 specifications and Apple India iPhone 17 specifications.

Warranty service is another consideration: Apple’s terms allow it to restrict iPhone warranty service to the original country of sale. Do not assume an imported phone has unrestricted worldwide warranty service. Check Apple’s warranty terms.

Canadian Mobile Networks: Check Your Actual Brand

Canada has several mobile network operators, or MNOs, alongside related brands with different prices and features. Sharing a parent company or Canadian network does not mean sharing the same India roaming policy.

The Major National Networks

Network group Related Canadian brands What matters for India travel
Bell Virgin Plus and Lucky Mobile Check the exact brand and plan. Bell roaming availability does not mean Lucky Mobile works overseas.
Rogers Fido and chatr Confirm India coverage, call and SMS rates, and Wi-Fi calling with your own brand.
TELUS Koodo Mobile and Public Mobile Do not assume TELUS travel options are included with Koodo or Public Mobile, especially on prepaid plans.

Brand information: BCE/Bell, Rogers and TELUS.

Regional and Alternative Networks

  • Vidéotron, Freedom Mobile and Fizz: these belong to the Québecor group. Their plans and international features differ. A good Canada–U.S. plan is not automatically a good India plan.
  • SaskTel: travellers should check its international roaming search and the terms for their specific account.
  • Eastlink: check its India travel options separately from domestic coverage or Canada–U.S.–Mexico benefits.

Official references: Québecor telecom brands, SaskTel international networks and Eastlink travel support.

Budget-brand warning: Lucky Mobile explicitly says it does not offer international roaming and its mobile service will not work outside Canada. A Lucky phone can still use another compatible SIM/eSIM or internet apps over Wi-Fi, but those do not deliver ordinary SMS sent to the inactive Lucky connection.

See Lucky Mobile’s international service notice. Public Mobile customers should also check the current coverage page; Canada–U.S.–Mexico coverage does not establish India service.

Canadian Roaming, Travel eSIM or Indian SIM: Which Should You Use?

Option Main advantage Main limitation Best fit
Canadian plan with India roaming included Uses your existing number and plan benefits India, your trip length and intended usage must be covered Travellers whose existing plan already includes suitable benefits
Canadian roaming pass Convenient access to calls, texts and data Daily fees can add up; eligibility and usage limits apply Short visits or people who need frequent Canadian-number calls
Travel data eSIM Can be arranged before arrival Often supplies data only, without an Indian number or Canadian SMS service Maps, messaging apps, email and arrival-day internet
Indian SIM or eSIM Local number and local mobile service Identity verification and activation are required Longer stays or frequent local calls and services
Wi-Fi only No separate mobile data purchase No dependable connection between hotspots; Canadian SMS is not guaranteed A backup rather than your only arrival plan

What is the cheapest way to use your phone internationally?

Check your existing plan first. If India roaming is already included, another purchase may be unnecessary. Otherwise, compare the total trip cost of a pass against travel data and an Indian connection.

Illustration only: a hypothetical C$15 daily fee used on 14 days costs C$210 before tax. Compare that with the complete cost of your alternative, including any calls or texts you still make through the Canadian line. This is not a quoted rate for a particular carrier.

When comparing travel eSIMs, check the Indian partner network, data allowance, validity start, hotspot rules, speed restrictions and whether voice or SMS is included. “Unlimited” can still involve fair-use limits.

For arrival planning, read Just Landed in India? How to Get Internet Without an Indian SIM.

Can You Keep Your Canadian Number While Using an eSIM in India?

Yes. Adding a second SIM or eSIM does not automatically cancel your Canadian service or change its number. Keep the Canadian account paid and active, and confirm that your phone supports the two active lines you need.

However, keeping ownership of a number is different from being able to receive messages on it in India. A suspended plan, unsupported roaming destination or unavailable Wi-Fi calling service can leave you unable to receive SMS.

Will Canadian bank OTPs arrive?

They may arrive through supported cellular roaming, or through supported carrier Wi-Fi calling and messaging. Delivery also depends on the bank, its messaging provider and your account configuration.

  • Confirm that your exact Canadian plan can receive SMS in India.
  • Ask whether incoming SMS is free and whether receiving one triggers a roaming pass.
  • Enable a bank-approved app verification method, authenticator, security key or recovery option where offered.
  • Test your banking access before departure and save the bank’s overseas support details.

TELUS states that incoming SMS does not trigger Easy Roam, while sending an SMS, using cellular data, or making or answering a voice call can trigger it. This is a TELUS policy example, not a rule for every Canadian provider. See TELUS roaming guidance and select India when checking your travel options.

Can Fongo replace your Canadian SIM for banking?

Do not assume it can. Fongo is a VoIP service, and some institutions do not support VoIP numbers for authentication. Fongo also says certain verification messages require a paid texting package or Fongo Plus; purchasing one does not make every sender compatible.

Confirm support with your bank before transferring an important number. See Fongo’s verification-message guidance.

Freedom Mobile is a mobile carrier, not the same type of service as a VoIP app. Its roaming and Wi-Fi calling options must be evaluated against the specific plan.

Can You Use Canadian Wi-Fi Calling in India?

It depends on your carrier. Turning on airplane mode and reconnecting to Wi-Fi is not a universal workaround for receiving Canadian calls and OTPs.

Carrier Published Wi-Fi calling position Practical implication
Rogers Supports Wi-Fi calling outside Canada. Incoming calls/messages and outgoing calls/messages to Canadian numbers are treated under the plan without roaming or long-distance charges, subject to its terms. Calls to Indian or other non-Canadian numbers can have different charges.
Bell Wi-Fi calling is available only within Canada. Do not rely on Bell Wi-Fi calling for your India connection.
TELUS Wi-Fi calling is available only in Canada. Arrange another supported method for Canadian calls and SMS in India.
Freedom Mobile Wi-Fi calling usage is treated as if made on its network in Canada, regardless of location. Calls to destinations outside your Canadian plan can attract long-distance charges.

Check the official terms before travelling: Rogers, Bell, TELUS and Freedom Mobile.

Set it up before leaving Canada: if your carrier supports Wi-Fi calling abroad, activate and test it at home. In India, confirm that the phone actually shows the carrier’s Wi-Fi calling connection before making a call. A Wi-Fi symbol alone does not establish how a telephone call is being routed or billed.

Using another SIM’s cellular data to support the Canadian line is also device- and carrier-dependent. Do not assume this works simply because both lines are installed.

Will You Be Charged for Incoming Calls in India?

Answering a call on a Canadian line over an Indian mobile network can trigger a roaming fee or per-minute charge. The caller being in Canada does not make the call free for you abroad. Your plan may include that usage, but you must check.

Ordinary SMS, picture messages, app messages and phone calls can be billed differently. Bell, for example, describes incoming texts as free in its roaming guidance, but that does not make answered calls or outgoing messages free. See Bell’s international roaming guide.

Will turning on data roaming immediately charge you?

The setting itself is not a purchase, but it permits roaming data use. Background apps can begin transferring data without you opening a browser, potentially triggering a pass or pay-per-use charges.

Turning data roaming off does not disable ordinary voice calls and SMS. Answering a call or sending a text can still be chargeable while data roaming is off.

Some travel eSIMs require data roaming to be enabled because they connect through partner networks. Follow that eSIM provider’s instructions and apply the setting to the correct line.

Choose between access and isolation: leaving the Canadian line connected may preserve SMS access but requires careful control of chargeable usage. Turning that line off prevents its ordinary cellular calls and SMS from reaching you. Airplane mode also prevents cellular roaming, but carrier Wi-Fi calling can still have billing rules if you re-enable Wi-Fi.

How to Set Up an iPhone With Canadian Service and India Data

  1. Install the second connection: follow the provider’s activation instructions while you have reliable internet. Check when validity begins.
  2. Label your lines: use names such as “Canada” and “India Data.”
  3. Select the data line: open Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service > Cellular Data and choose the India/travel connection.
  4. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching: this helps prevent automatic data switching to the other line.
  5. Review roaming separately: turn Canadian data roaming off if avoiding Canadian roaming data. Enable it on the travel eSIM only if instructed.
  6. Review calls and messages: check which line is selected before making calls or sending SMS. Existing contacts can retain their previously used line.
  7. Keep the Canadian line active only as planned: confirm its India SMS support and understand the charges before using it.

Menu wording varies by iOS version. These settings do not block every possible charge on an active Canadian line. See Apple’s Dual SIM instructions and international eSIM travel guide.

Should You Get an Indian SIM or eSIM?

An Indian connection can be useful for a longer visit, local calling and services that require an Indian mobile number. A data-only travel eSIM usually does not provide those local-number benefits.

Ask an authorized provider outlet about the documents required for your nationality and immigration status. Foreign visitors should be prepared to present their passport, visa or other applicable status document, and requested address or contact information. Do not assume an online activation process designed for Indian residents will accept your documents.

Indian eSIM support does not guarantee immediate new-customer activation for every foreign visitor. If your phone has no SIM tray, confirm that the outlet can issue an eSIM directly to an eligible visitor before paying.

Jio’s customer terms include verification requirements and validity restrictions for foreign customers. Check the relevant Jio customer terms and the conditions for the prepaid or postpaid service you intend to buy.

For more preparation, read Traveling to India With an eSIM-Only Phone.

Before-You-Fly Checklist

  • Confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports your intended connection.
  • Check India coverage for your exact Canadian brand, plan and prepaid/postpaid account.
  • Ask what triggers roaming charges and how the billing day or pass period is measured.
  • Arrange a working alternative to SMS banking verification where available.
  • Install travel data before departure if the provider permits it.
  • Save activation instructions, account recovery information and carrier support contacts.
  • Download your arrival address, essential documents and an offline map.
  • Carry a charging cable and an airline-compliant power bank.
  • Keep a printed boarding pass or other usable backup for critical travel details.

For arrival Wi-Fi limitations, see Free Wi-Fi at Indian Airports. For document backups, read Phone Dead or Lost? Why Carry a Printed Boarding Pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Canadian SIM in India?

Yes, if your provider and exact plan support roaming in India, the required account features are enabled, and your phone is compatible. An international calling add-on for calls from Canada is not the same as international roaming.

Is roaming in India free?

Not automatically. India usage might be included in your plan, covered by a purchased pass or charged separately. Check India specifically; Canada–U.S. or Canada–U.S.–Mexico benefits do not imply India coverage.

Can I get an eSIM and keep my Canadian number?

Yes. Add the travel connection as a second line and keep your Canadian subscription active. The travel eSIM does not take over delivery of messages sent to your Canadian number.

Can I use WhatsApp with my Canadian number and Indian data?

An already-registered WhatsApp account can generally use a different internet connection without changing its registered number. Keep control of the Canadian number because you may need to verify it again if you reinstall the app or change phones.

Why do WhatsApp messages arrive but bank OTPs do not?

WhatsApp uses the internet. A bank OTP sent by ordinary SMS needs a supported connection to the Canadian mobile line. Working travel data alone does not establish that SMS connection.

Should I turn off my Canadian line completely?

That can prevent ordinary cellular usage on the line, but you will also lose its cellular SMS and calls. If you need OTPs, arrange an approved alternative or confirm a supported, affordable way to keep receiving messages.

Can I take three iPhones from Canada to India?

Do not assume three phones are automatically duty-free. Customs treatment depends on genuine personal use, gifts, value and the applicable baggage rules. Multiple new phones can require declaration and duty; unboxing them does not create an exemption.

Check the Baggage Rules, 2026 and our guide to how many phones you can carry to India.

Can any international phone work in India?

Being sold overseas is not itself a barrier. Check the exact model’s network compatibility, lock status and SIM support. Older phones and region-specific models need particular attention.

What is a practical setup for a Canada-to-India trip?

First use any suitable India benefits already included in your Canadian plan. Otherwise, compare travel data or an Indian connection while preserving a verified method of accessing your Canadian number and banking accounts.

Will a U.S. iPad Cellular Work in India?

Updated: August 17, 2026

Will a U.S. iPad Cellular Work in India?

Yes, a U.S. iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular will usually work in India for mobile data, provided the iPad supports the Indian network bands and you activate a compatible Indian eSIM or use supported international roaming.

Apple designs cellular iPads for broad international use, and its current 5G/LTE compatibility information includes both the United States and India for many recent iPad models. Apple also says Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads can connect to cellular data networks in more than 190 countries.

For most travelers, the practical question is not whether the iPad turns on in India—it will—but whether you can activate Airtel, Jio or another suitable data plan on the U.S.-purchased cellular model.

Quick answer: A recent unlocked U.S. iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular is generally a good candidate for use in India. Airtel and Jio support eSIM in India, and Jio specifically supports eSIM activation on compatible smart tablets. Older cellular iPads deserve a closer check because model numbers, LTE bands and physical-SIM/eSIM support vary by generation.

Will a U.S. iPad Cellular Work in India

Does a U.S. iPad Cellular Work in India?

Usually yes, especially with recent Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models.

Apple currently says that Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads can connect directly to mobile data networks in more than 190 countries. Its current cellular-network compatibility pages also list both India and the United States for many recent 5G and LTE iPad models.

To use cellular data in India, you generally need:

  • A Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad rather than Wi-Fi-only
  • A compatible U.S. iPad model
  • An unlocked device where carrier locking is relevant
  • An Indian eSIM or supported roaming plan
  • A compatible Airtel, Jio or other carrier data plan

Unlike an Apple Watch: an iPad Cellular is primarily a mobile-data device. You do not need to pair it with an Indian iPhone carrier account just to use an Indian iPad data plan.

Wi-Fi vs Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad

Before worrying about U.S.-to-India compatibility, make sure you actually have a cellular model.

iPad Type Indian Mobile Data Wi-Fi GPS
Wi-Fi only No direct mobile network Yes Location functions available, but hardware differs by model
Wi-Fi + Cellular Yes, with compatible plan Yes Cellular models include additional positioning capabilities

A Wi-Fi-only U.S. iPad cannot be converted into a cellular iPad by installing an eSIM.

Check before buying: “eSIM capable” applies only to compatible Wi-Fi + Cellular models. A Wi-Fi-only iPad does not contain the cellular radio hardware.

Why Do Many U.S. Cellular iPads Work in India?

Apple designs modern cellular iPads with support for many LTE and 5G frequency bands used internationally.

Apple's current iPad cellular information says all Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads connect to LTE networks around the world, while compatible newer models also support 5G.

Apple still publishes different model numbers for some regions and generations, so the safest approach is to check the exact model rather than assume every cellular iPad ever sold in America has identical radio hardware.

For a recent U.S. iPad: India compatibility is generally much less problematic than it was with some older cellular tablets, but checking the model number before buying is still worthwhile.

How to Check Your U.S. iPad Model Number

You can identify the exact iPad using the model number beginning with A.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Find Model Number.
  • Tap the displayed part number if necessary to reveal the A-number.

You may see a number such as:

Axxxx

That model number is more useful than simply saying:

“I have an iPad Air Cellular.”

Different generations of iPad Air, Pro, mini and standard iPad can support different network combinations.

Do Newer U.S. Cellular iPads Work Better in India?

Generally, newer cellular iPads have broader LTE and 5G band support and rely increasingly on eSIM.

Apple's current cellular-iPad page describes eSIM as the standard way current iPads connect to mobile data, including while traveling internationally.

Recent product families include:

  • iPad Pro Wi-Fi + Cellular
  • iPad Air Wi-Fi + Cellular
  • iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular
  • iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular

For a new U.S. purchase that will spend much of its life in India, a recent unlocked cellular version is generally easier to use internationally than a much older model.

What About an Older U.S. Cellular iPad?

Older iPads require more checking.

Depending on generation, the device may use:

  • Physical nano-SIM
  • eSIM
  • Both physical SIM and eSIM
  • Older LTE bands
  • Different U.S. carrier-specific model variants

If you are buying an older or refurbished U.S. iPad, check:

  • Exact A-number
  • Whether it is Wi-Fi + Cellular
  • Whether it supports eSIM
  • LTE/5G bands listed by Apple
  • Carrier-lock status
  • Battery condition
  • Activation Lock status

Used-iPad tip: The seller saying “works with Verizon” is not enough. Ask for the exact model number and whether the device is unlocked.

Will a U.S. iPad Cellular Work With Airtel in India?

Many compatible U.S. cellular iPads can use Airtel eSIM service.

Apple currently lists Airtel among Indian carriers offering eSIM activation, including prepaid options for international travelers.

Airtel's current eSIM system asks for the device's 32-digit EID during activation.

That EID identifies the embedded SIM hardware inside the device.

Typical Airtel eSIM Process

  • Get an eligible Airtel connection.
  • Open the Airtel app.
  • Choose the eSIM upgrade option.
  • Select the appropriate device.
  • Enter the iPad's EID.
  • Complete OTP verification.
  • Install the cellular profile when instructed.

If the system does not accept the EID or IMEI, contact Airtel rather than assuming the iPad hardware is incompatible.

Will a U.S. iPad Cellular Work With Jio in India?

Jio is another strong option for a compatible U.S. iPad.

Jio's current eSIM activation page specifically refers to activation on compatible smartphones and smart tablets.

Its published SMS activation process uses:

  • 32-digit EID
  • 15-digit IMEI
  • Jio mobile number
  • Registered email address

Jio eSIM Setup

Jio currently instructs eligible users to initiate eSIM activation using the EID and IMEI associated with the device and then complete confirmation and profile installation.

For an iPad: Jio's explicit reference to eSIM-compatible smart tablets is useful confirmation that its eSIM service is not limited only to smartphones.

Will a U.S. iPad Work With Vi?

Vi also provides eSIM services in India for supported devices and eligible accounts, but compatibility and plan availability should be checked directly before relying on a specific imported iPad.

If your primary goal is short-term data during a visit, compare Airtel, Jio and travel-eSIM options based on:

  • Coverage where you will stay
  • Data allowance
  • Validity
  • 5G access
  • Ease of activation
  • Whether Indian ID/KYC requirements apply

Can You Install an Indian eSIM on a U.S. iPad?

Yes, on a compatible unlocked Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad.

Apple says current cellular iPads use eSIM and emphasizes the convenience of changing mobile data service when traveling internationally.

Depending on the carrier and iPad generation, setup can involve:

  • Carrier app
  • QR code
  • Carrier activation
  • Manual eSIM details
  • EID/IMEI registration

This is different from Apple Watch: a cellular iPad can use its own mobile-data plan. It does not ordinarily need a number-sharing smartwatch plan tied to an iPhone.

Can You Put an Indian Physical SIM in a U.S. iPad?

It depends on the iPad generation.

Some older U.S. Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads include a physical nano-SIM tray. Newer models increasingly rely entirely on eSIM.

Before buying an Indian physical SIM for the tablet:

  • Check whether your exact iPad has a SIM tray.
  • Check whether it is unlocked.
  • Confirm that the Indian plan supports tablet/data use.

If the iPad is eSIM-only, use a compatible Airtel, Jio or other eSIM rather than looking for a physical SIM slot that does not exist.

Will 5G Work on a U.S. iPad in India?

It can, if the exact iPad supports the 5G bands used by the Indian carrier and your Indian plan includes 5G access.

Apple's current network compatibility chart includes India for many recent 5G-capable iPads and publishes the supported 5G bands for each hardware family.

5G availability still depends on:

  • Exact iPad model
  • Carrier
  • Mobile plan
  • Location
  • Network coverage

Do not interpret “5G iPad” as a guarantee that every 5G frequency used anywhere in the world is supported. Check Apple's model-specific network chart if 5G is essential.

Will 4G LTE Work on a U.S. iPad in India?

LTE compatibility is generally broad on modern cellular iPads.

Apple says all current Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads connect to LTE networks around the world.

For many travelers, stable Indian 4G/LTE service is more important than whether the device always displays 5G.

If 5G does not appear immediately: confirm LTE/mobile data first. A working 4G connection usually means the iPad is usable even if carrier provisioning or local coverage prevents 5G.

What If the iPad Was Bought From AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile?

A U.S. cellular iPad may have previously been used with:

  • AT&T
  • Verizon
  • T-Mobile
  • Another U.S. carrier

The important questions are:

  • Is the iPad unlocked?
  • Is there an active U.S. eSIM profile?
  • Does the Indian carrier recognize the IMEI/EID?
  • Does the model support the necessary Indian network bands?

If you are permanently switching to Indian service, remove unused U.S. cellular profiles only after confirming you no longer need them.

Deleting a cellular plan from the iPad does not necessarily cancel the U.S. carrier bill. Cancel unwanted U.S. service directly with the carrier.

Are U.S. iPads Carrier Locked?

Carrier-lock rules depend on how and where the iPad was purchased and on the U.S. carrier's policies.

An iPad bought directly from Apple is often the simplest choice for international use, while an iPad originally sold under a carrier promotion or financing arrangement should be checked carefully.

Before bringing a used U.S. cellular iPad to India, ask the U.S. carrier or seller to confirm that it can accept another carrier's cellular plan.

Can You Keep Your U.S. iPad Plan and Roam in India?

Possibly.

If your existing U.S. carrier offers international data roaming for the iPad line, you may be able to continue using that plan in India.

Compare the roaming option with an Indian eSIM because international tablet data can be much more expensive than local service depending on your U.S. plan.

Travelers keeping an American cellular account should also read Best U.S. Phone Carrier for Travel to India.

T-Mobile customers can also see T-Mobile Free Data and Texts India Travel Plan, but verify whether your specific tablet line receives the same international benefits as your phone line.

Can You Use a Travel eSIM on a U.S. iPad in India?

On a compatible unlocked cellular iPad, a travel-data eSIM may be another option.

This can be convenient for a short trip because it may avoid changing your main U.S. carrier account.

Travel eSIM vs Indian Carrier

Option Good For Possible Drawback
U.S. carrier roaming Short trip, easiest setup Can be expensive or limited
Airtel eSIM Local Indian service Activation/KYC requirements
Jio eSIM Local Indian service Activation/KYC requirements
Travel data eSIM Visitors wanting quick data May be data-only and cost more per GB
iPhone hotspot Occasional use Uses phone battery and requires phone nearby

Can an iPad Cellular Make Normal Phone Calls in India?

An iPad Cellular is not the same as an iPhone.

Its cellular connection is primarily for mobile data. It does not become a normal standalone mobile phone simply because you insert or activate an Indian SIM/eSIM.

You can still use communication apps such as:

  • FaceTime
  • WhatsApp
  • Google Meet
  • Teams
  • Other internet calling apps

and Apple continuity features may allow calls through an associated iPhone where configured.

Do not buy a cellular iPad expecting it to replace an Indian phone line for ordinary voice calling and SMS in exactly the same way as an iPhone.

Do You Even Need a Cellular iPad in India?

For some travelers, no.

If you already carry an iPhone with an Indian SIM or travel eSIM, you can connect a Wi-Fi iPad through the iPhone's Personal Hotspot.

Cellular iPad Is Useful If You:

  • Travel frequently without reliable Wi-Fi
  • Work from the iPad
  • Use maps or field applications away from Wi-Fi
  • Do not want to depend on your phone battery
  • Want always-on mobile data

Wi-Fi iPad May Be Enough If You:

  • Mainly use it at home
  • Stay in hotels with Wi-Fi
  • Carry your iPhone everywhere
  • Only need occasional mobile data

Why Won't My U.S. iPad Cellular Work in India?

Problem Possible Cause What to Check
No Add eSIM option Wi-Fi-only or older model Confirm exact iPad model
Jio rejects activation EID/IMEI or account problem Verify EID, IMEI and registered details
Airtel eSIM does not install Provisioning/account issue Check Airtel account and EID
No Service Carrier profile or network issue Restart, check cellular settings and carrier
LTE works but not 5G Model, plan or coverage limitation Check 5G bands and Indian plan
U.S. eSIM works but Indian plan does not Carrier provisioning problem Contact Indian carrier
Indian SIM says unsupported Locked device or incompatible plan Verify U.S. carrier-lock status

Basic Troubleshooting

  • Update iPadOS.
  • Restart the iPad.
  • Turn Airplane Mode on and off.
  • Open Settings → Mobile Data/Cellular.
  • Confirm the Indian plan is enabled.
  • Check whether Data Roaming should be on or off for the plan you are using.
  • Check APN or carrier configuration if the carrier instructs you to.
  • Confirm the device's IMEI and EID.
  • Contact the carrier if activation remains pending.

Buying an iPad in USA for India: What Should You Check?

  • Decide whether you really need Cellular: Wi-Fi models are cheaper.
  • Get the exact A-number: Especially for older or refurbished iPads.
  • Check Apple's cellular-network page: Confirm India is supported for that model family.
  • Confirm eSIM support: Particularly if there is no physical SIM tray.
  • Buy unlocked: Avoid unnecessary U.S. carrier restrictions.
  • Check Activation Lock: Never buy a used iPad still attached to another person's Apple Account.
  • Check battery health/condition: Important on older units.
  • Compare U.S. and Indian prices: Include U.S. sales tax.
  • Consider warranty/service: Imported-device service can depend on product and region.
  • Consider Indian customs: A personal used iPad is different from multiple new sealed electronics.

Best choice for India: If you are buying specifically for long-term use in India, choose a recent unlocked Wi-Fi + Cellular model and verify its Apple model number before leaving the U.S.

Do You Have to Pay Indian Customs Duty on a U.S. iPad?

Cellular compatibility and customs are separate issues.

There is a practical difference between:

  • Your personally used iPad
  • A new sealed iPad
  • An additional tablet brought as a gift
  • Multiple new electronics

For broader electronics guidance, read Can I Bring Used Electronics to India? and India Customs Duty on Used Electronics.

Can You Carry an iPad on a Flight to India?

Yes. An iPad is ordinarily carried in cabin baggage with other personal electronics.

For travel:

  • Protect the screen.
  • Keep the iPad accessible for security screening.
  • Do not place a separate power bank in checked baggage.
  • Follow the airline's cabin baggage weight limits.

For battery guidance, see Lithium Batteries on India Flights and Power Bank Rules on Flights in India.
