Cabin Bag Size in India: Carry-On Rules Guide

There is no single cabin bag size accepted by every airline in India. Air India lists 55 × 40 × 20 cm, while IndiGo lists 55 × 35 × 25 cm. These limits are different, even though both add up to 115 cm.


Yes, airlines can check your cabin bag’s size and weight. A suitcase may be inspected at check-in or boarding, and a bag labelled “cabin approved” can still exceed your airline’s limits. Measure the fully packed bag, including wheels, fixed handles and outer pockets, before travelling.

The maximum depends on the operating airline and sometimes the aircraft. Check all three measurements rather than relying on a general “115 cm” description.

These are standard allowances, not a substitute for the conditions of a purchased upgrade, special arrangement or partner-operated flight.

Why 115 cm Does Not Mean Any Shape Is Acceptable

A bag measuring 55 × 40 × 20 cm totals 115 cm. So does a bag measuring 55 × 35 × 25 cm. However, the first is wider and the second is deeper.

Where an airline specifies individual dimensions, meeting the combined total does not cancel those limits. A long, narrow bag can also total 115 cm while being too long for permitted cabin storage.

Buying one bag for several airlines? Compare the smallest permitted measurement in each direction across your planned flights. For example, 55 × 35 × 20 cm falls within the published main-bag dimensions of Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express and SpiceJet Boeing services. It is still too tall for SpiceJet’s listed Q400 limit.

Do Airlines Check Cabin Bag Size in India?

Yes. Airlines can check dimensions as well as weight. Staff may ask you to place the bag in a baggage sizer, measure it or have it weighed. Checks can happen at the check-in counter or boarding gate.

Not every bag is necessarily measured on every departure. That does not make an oversized bag compliant, and a previous flight without a check is not proof that the bag will be accepted again.

Does Air India Check Cabin Bag Size?

Air India publishes size limits, so prepare for them to be enforced. A trolley that meets the weight allowance can still exceed the permitted dimensions. Online check-in does not exempt your luggage from inspection.

Does IndiGo Check Cabin Bag Size?

IndiGo also specifies dimensions and a weight limit. Treat both as requirements. Do not assume a bag will be accepted because it looks similar to other passengers’ luggage or because you have previously used it on another airline.

Three separate checks: a bag can be the correct size but overweight, the correct weight but oversized, or compliant individually while exceeding your permitted number of pieces.

How Do You Measure a Cabin Bag Correctly?

Measure the bag as you will actually carry it, with the contents packed and all compartments closed.

  1. Retract the telescopic handle. Include any part that still protrudes when fully retracted.
  2. Measure the full height. Include wheels and the fixed top handle.
  3. Measure the widest point. Include side handles and filled side pockets.
  4. Measure the deepest point. Include front pockets, bulges and any expanded section.
  5. Compare each measurement. Do not check only the sum of the dimensions.
  6. Weigh the complete bag. The suitcase itself counts toward the allowance.

For an irregular backpack or duffel, measure the outermost points when packed. Soft sides help only if the bag genuinely fits the permitted space without excessive force.

Check the product listing carefully: some luggage sellers advertise the suitcase body size separately from its overall dimensions. Ask for the external measurements including wheels and handles.

Are 20-Inch, 22-Inch or 24-Inch Bags Allowed?

Inch labels are not reliable airline approvals. They may describe the suitcase body, an approximate product category or its overall height. Width and depth still matter.

Why a “22-Inch Cabin Bag” Can Be Rejected

A suitcase measuring exactly 22 inches externally is 55.88 cm tall. That is greater than 55 cm, even though some product descriptions round the numbers. If the advertised 22 inches excludes wheels, the actual bag may be taller still.

Likewise, a 22 × 14 × 9-inch bag measures approximately 55.9 × 35.6 × 22.9 cm. Those measurements are not interchangeable with 55 × 40 × 20 cm.

Can You Expand a Cabin Suitcase?

Only if its expanded dimensions still comply. A suitcase may meet the limit with its expansion zipper closed and exceed it when expanded. Recheck after shopping or packing for the return flight.

What Does the 7 kg Cabin-Baggage Limit Include?

Where your allowance is 7 kg, that includes the bag and everything inside it. A light-looking suitcase can be overweight because of a laptop, books, chargers or toiletries.

Example: a trolley weighing 2.8 kg empty leaves 4.2 kg for its contents under a 7 kg allowance. A lighter bag gives you more usable packing weight.

Whether your handbag is included in that same total depends on the airline:

  • Air India and IndiGo: publish an additional qualifying personal-item allowance of up to 3 kg.
  • Air India Express and SpiceJet: their standard 7 kg allowance covers the main bag and permitted personal item together.

Separate allowances are not automatically interchangeable. If your policy provides 7 kg for the main bag and 3 kg for a personal item, an 8 kg trolley plus a 2 kg purse does not automatically comply.

Can You Take Two Cabin Bags, a Handbag or a Laptop Bag?

One main cabin bag plus one qualifying personal item is different from two full-size cabin bags. A large backpack does not become a personal item simply because you are also carrying a trolley.

  • Trolley plus small purse: may fit a main-bag and personal-item allowance.
  • Backpack plus purse: may work if the backpack is your main cabin bag.
  • Trolley, backpack and handbag: three separate pieces; do not assume all are included.
  • Laptop bag: may use your personal-item allowance rather than provide a further free bag.

What Happens If Your Cabin Bag Is Too Big or Overweight?

The airline may ask you to repack, consolidate your belongings, purchase an available allowance option or check the bag into the hold. A weight upgrade does not automatically permit a larger suitcase.

There is no universal free tolerance for a bag that is slightly over the limit. Resolve a known problem before reaching the gate, where your options and available time may be limited.

Are Gate-Checked Bags Always Charged?

No. A compliant bag taken into the hold because cabin storage is full is a different situation from a bag that exceeds your allowance. Charges depend on the reason, airline policy and your booking.

Ask staff whether a charge applies and where you should collect the bag. See when gate-checked bags are free and when airlines charge.

Before handing over a cabin bag: remove power banks and spare lithium batteries. Keep identification, travel documents, essential medicines, money and valuables with you. Tell staff about any battery-powered equipment that remains inside.

What Is Not Allowed in Cabin Baggage in India?

A correctly sized bag can still contain restricted items. Check its contents separately from its dimensions.

A partly empty 200 ml bottle is still a 200 ml container. Check the applicable exception before carrying larger essential medical liquids.

Cabin Bag Checklist Before You Fly

  1. Check the operating airline and aircraft-specific allowance for each flight.
  2. Measure the packed bag’s external height, width and depth.
  3. Keep expandable sections closed unless the expanded bag complies.
  4. Weigh the complete bag and check whether personal-item weight is separate or combined.
  5. Count all separately carried bags, including purses and laptop bags.
  6. Keep documents, medicines and battery items accessible if the main bag must be checked.
  7. Save your baggage allowance and any paid upgrade with your booking.
  8. Reweigh and remeasure before the return journey.

Leave a little packing margin. A bag below the limits gives you room for small additions and reduces disputes over measurement or scale differences. Packing cubes organise belongings but do not reduce their weight.

Your handbag is luggage you carry into the cabin, but it may qualify as a personal item rather than use up your main cabin-bag allowance. A compact purse and a large travel tote should not be treated as interchangeable.

The wording can be confusing. An airline may use “hand baggage” or even “handbag” to mean the main carry-on bag. Passengers often use “handbag” to mean a smaller purse. Look for a separate section headed “personal item” or “personal article” in the airline’s policy.

  • Main cabin bag: Your permitted trolley, duffel or backpack, subject to the airline’s cabin-bag limits.
  • Personal item: A qualifying smaller bag, such as a purse or laptop bag, carried under the airline’s additional-item rules.
  • Extra bag: Another separate item beyond the permitted number of pieces. Being small does not automatically make it exempt.

Does the 7 kg Carry-On Limit Include Your Handbag?

Does a crossbody bag count?

If your power bank starts smoking on a flight, alert cabin crew immediately. Press the call button and call out clearly. Do not wait for flames, pick up a smoking device or carry it down the aisle.


A portable charger can look harmless until it becomes unusually hot, swells or releases smoke. Recognising a problem early—and letting the crew respond—is more important than trying to save your phone, bag or charger.

What Happened on the October IndiGo Flight?

On 11 October 2026, IndiGo flight 6E 6115 from Delhi to Chennai diverted to Hyderabad after smoke was detected from a passenger’s electronic device. News reports identified the device as a power bank.

According to NDTV Profit’s report, the aircraft landed safely, the airline said the crew brought the situation under control, and an alternative aircraft was arranged. The airline’s statement did not establish the detailed cause of the device failure.

The incident is a reminder to take warning signs seriously. It is not evidence that every power bank will fail or that a particular brand caused the problem.

Warning Signs: You Do Not Need to Wait for Flames

The FAA’s passenger battery guidance says travellers should immediately notify crew if a battery or electronic device is overheating, expanding, smoking or burning.

Why can a power bank catch fire?

Power banks contain rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. A damaged or faulty cell can enter thermal runaway: an uncontrolled heating process that can release gas and lead to fire. Damage, excessive heat and charging problems are among the possible triggers described in EASA’s lithium-battery safety guidance.

A battery does not have to be connected to a phone to develop a problem.

What Should You Do Immediately?

  1. Get the crew’s attention. Use the call button and speak loudly enough to be heard. Do not assume another passenger has already reported it.
  2. Identify the location clearly. Tell the crew whether the device is on your tray, in your bag, in an overhead compartment or trapped beside your seat.
  3. Describe the problem simply. For example: “There is smoke coming from the charger in the bag under this seat.” Tell them if it was connected to a phone or power outlet.
  4. Keep access clear. Do not crowd around the device or block the aisle to film. Move when the crew directs you.
  5. Report any injury or breathing difficulty. Tell the crew promptly if someone has been burned or affected by smoke.

Report first; explain later. You do not need the brand, capacity, receipt or a photograph before asking for help. Even if you accidentally packed or used the device incorrectly, do not delay reporting it.

Should you unplug it?

Do not reach through smoke or touch a hot or damaged device to disconnect a cable. Tell the crew what is connected and follow their instructions. Removing external power does not necessarily stop a battery failure already under way.

Dangerous Mistakes to Avoid

Transport Canada’s crew guidance on battery fires warns against moving an actively smoking or burning device, covering it, or using ice to cool it. For passengers:

  • Do not carry it to the lavatory or galley. Point out its location to the crew.
  • Do not hide it in a bag or wrap it in a blanket. Leave containment decisions to trained crew.
  • Do not use ice or dry ice.
  • Do not open the casing or remove the battery.
  • Do not open a smoking overhead compartment yourself. Alert the crew and keep clear.

A personal pouch or improvised container is not a substitute for the airline’s emergency procedures.

Can Water Be Used on a Power-Bank Fire?
