Canada–India Travel Guide: Baggage, Customs, Documents and Connectivity

Updated: September 29, 2026

Travelling between Canada and India involves more than booking an international flight. Your passport and immigration status determine the documents you need, your fare determines your baggage allowance, and a connecting domestic flight can introduce different baggage and check-in requirements.

This Canada–India travel hub brings together practical guides for Canadian citizens, OCI cardholders, Indian passport holders living in Canada and families travelling between the two countries. Use it to plan your departure, arrival in India and return to Canada.

Canada–India Travel Guide

Before booking: Check documents for both directions, the baggage allowance printed on every ticket, any transit-country requirements and how you will get internet access after landing. Do not assume that living in Canada means everyone in your family has the same entry requirements.

Can You Travel from Canada to India Now?

Yes, travel is possible for passengers who meet the applicable entry and transit requirements. However, check the status of your flight, your documents and the destinations within India you intend to visit.

The Government of Canada’s India travel advisory currently advises exercising a high degree of caution and includes stronger advice for certain regions. Read the regional information as well as the national advisory before finalising your itinerary.

Recheck your airline’s notices close to departure. A route appearing in a booking search does not guarantee that every departure operates without schedule changes.

Passports, Indian Visas and OCI: Which Documents Do You Need?

Your citizenship and travel documents matter more than your Canadian departure airport. A Canadian citizen, an Indian citizen with Canadian permanent residence and a Canadian citizen holding OCI do not follow the same document checklist.

Traveller For the journey to India Return-trip check
Canadian citizen without OCI Valid Canadian passport and an appropriate Indian visa or approved e-Visa, where eligible. Check Canadian passport validity and transit requirements.
Canadian citizen with valid OCI Valid foreign passport and OCI documentation; check any required passport-detail updates. Travel with the documents required for Canadian citizens.
Indian citizen with Canadian permanent residence Valid Indian passport. Valid PR card or, when required, a Permanent Resident Travel Document for the flight back.
Indian citizen studying or working in Canada Valid Indian passport. Check the Canadian entry document and status requirements for your circumstances. Do not treat a study or work permit alone as a travel visa.
Family travelling with children Check each child’s passport and visa or OCI documents individually. Review consent and supporting documents where a child travels with one parent or another adult.

Does a Canadian Citizen Need a Visa to Enter India?

A Canadian citizen without valid OCI generally needs an appropriate Indian visa before travelling. Eligible Canadian passport holders can apply through the official Indian e-Visa portal. Choose the category that matches the purpose of the visit.

A Canadian PR card does not replace an Indian visa for a traveller using a foreign passport. Equally, an Indian citizen travelling on a valid Indian passport does not need an Indian visitor visa.

How Much Passport Validity Do You Need?

For a regular Canadian passport, Canada’s India advisory specifies validity for at least six months from entry into India and at least two blank pages. Also follow the passport requirements stated in your visa application instructions.

Travelling With OCI

Carry your valid passport and OCI documentation, and check the official OCI Services portal if your passport or personal details have changed. Pay particular attention to children’s documents and any applicable update requirements.

Indian Visa Fees and Processing Times for Canadians

How Much Is an Indian Visa for a Canadian Citizen?

There is no single fee for every Indian visa. The amount depends on the visa category, duration and application route. Tourist e-Visas, regular visas and business visas can have different fees.

For an e-Tourist Visa, use the Canadian nationality entry in the official country-specific fee schedule and confirm the amount displayed during application. Published e-Visa fees are in US dollars, so the Canadian-dollar amount charged can vary with currency conversion and payment charges.

Regular applications submitted through an authorised service provider can involve separate service or delivery charges. Do not compare a third-party package price with the government fee alone.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Indian Visa?

The official e-Visa instructions require eligible tourist applicants to apply at least four days before arrival. This is a minimum application lead time, not a guaranteed approval deadline.

Apply comfortably ahead of your trip within the permitted application window. Check that the authorisation is granted before departure; an application receipt or payment confirmation is not a visa approval.

For a regular visa, follow the processing guidance of the Indian mission serving your Canadian jurisdiction. The government’s general processing page describes a minimum of three working days after receipt by the mission, subject to nationality and special cases. Submission, additional checks and postal transit can extend the overall time.

Is the e-Arrival Card a Visa?

No. The official portal provides an online arrival-information form for foreign travellers and OCI cardholders, which can be submitted within 72 hours before arrival. The e-Arrival card does not replace a visa or OCI. Check the current instructions before your journey.

Canada–India Flights and Transit Arrangements

Compare the complete journey from your Canadian starting city to your final destination in India. An itinerary from Calgary to Amritsar, for example, may involve connections at both ends even when the main international sector is nonstop.

Check these details before paying:

  • Operating airline: The airline selling the ticket may not operate every flight.
  • Stops: Confirm whether the service is nonstop or includes an intermediate stop.
  • Ticket structure: Establish whether the flights are on one ticket or separate bookings.
  • Transit documents: Check the rules for your passport and immigration status in every connecting country.
  • Airport changes: Verify airport codes as well as city names.
  • Total travel time: Include immigration, baggage collection, terminal changes and check-in deadlines.

Use the flight duration shown for your date and direction rather than a fixed Canada–India flight-time estimate.

If your itinerary connects through the Gulf, see our Gulf to India Travel Guide. For onboard connectivity, read Free Wi-Fi on International Flights to India.

Canada–India Baggage Allowance: Check Your Actual Fare

Do not assume every Canada–India economy ticket includes two checked bags. The allowance can depend on the airline, fare, ticket-issue date, route and frequent-flyer benefits.

Booking What to check Official reference
Air Canada Included bags, weight, dimensions and additional-bag fees for your itinerary. Air Canada checked baggage
Air India Fare-specific Canada allowance and any connecting-flight conditions. Air India checked baggage
Mixed-airline itinerary The baggage rules shown on the ticket and handling arrangements at each connection. Your booking confirmation and the airlines involved.
Separate domestic ticket in India The domestic allowance and whether a specific international-connection benefit applies. The domestic operating airline.

Cabin baggage is a separate allowance. A bag accepted on the international flight may exceed the size or weight allowance of the onward domestic airline.

Connecting From Your Canada Flight to a Domestic Flight in India

A generous international baggage allowance does not automatically transfer to an independently booked domestic flight. However, some airlines offer benefits subject to specific conditions, so check before purchasing extra baggage.

Air India publishes conditions for domestic connections on the same ticket and certain separate-ticket connections. Verify eligibility, timing and documentation against its current policy.

At check-in in Canada, ask where your bags are tagged and where you must collect them. Through-tagging does not necessarily remove a customs collection or recheck requirement.

Example: For Toronto–Delhi followed by Delhi–Amritsar, establish the arrival terminal, customs process, baggage recheck location and domestic check-in deadline. Do not judge the connection using flying time alone.

Indian Customs: Gifts, Jewellery and Personal Belongings

Airline baggage allowance and customs allowance are different. Permission to check a suitcase does not establish that everything inside enters India duty-free.

Before packing gifts, jewellery, electronics or alcohol, identify the applicable item-specific rules. Keep invoices and ownership records available where relevant. Ask Customs when you are uncertain about a declaration.

If you buy gold during a Dubai connection, read Dubai Duty-Free Gold to India: Customs Rules Explained. “Duty-free” at the departure shop does not automatically mean duty-free on arrival in India.

Packing for a Long Journey

Using Your Canadian Phone in India

Arrange connectivity before departure so you can contact family, find your driver and access bookings after landing.

Option Main benefit What to check
Canadian carrier roaming Keep using your existing number and plan features where supported. India coverage, daily charges or passes, data limits and what triggers billing.
Travel eSIM Arrange mobile data before travelling. Unlocked-phone compatibility, activation timing, network and whether calls or SMS are included.
Indian mobile connection Local service for an extended stay. Eligibility, identity verification, activation and physical SIM or eSIM availability.
Airport or hotel Wi-Fi A useful backup. Login requirements and whether an SMS verification code is needed.

For example, check the current terms for Rogers travel passes or Bell roaming options. Other Canadian providers and individual plans can differ.

If you use a separate data eSIM, review which line supplies mobile data and disable automatic data switching where appropriate. Follow the eSIM provider’s roaming instructions. Turning off data roaming on your Canadian line does not necessarily prevent charges for calls or messages.

Also check how you will receive bank verification codes. A data-only travel eSIM does not itself receive SMS addressed to your Canadian number.

Plan Your Return to Canada Before Leaving

Canadian Permanent Residents

Canadian permanent residents generally need their valid passport plus a valid PR card or Permanent Resident Travel Document to board a commercial flight back to Canada. An expired PR card does not automatically mean lost PR status, but it can create a boarding problem.

Check the official Canadian PR travel-document guidance before departure, especially if your card will expire during the visit.

Purchases, Gifts and Jewellery

Keep receipts for purchases made in India and check your Canadian personal exemption. Eligible returning residents absent for at least 48 hours can generally claim an exemption of up to CAN$800, subject to the applicable conditions and separate alcohol and tobacco limits.

Read the CBSA guide for residents returning to Canada. Do not assume that wedding gifts or jewellery purchases are excluded from declaration requirements.

Food From India

Declare food, plant and animal products when entering Canada. Whether an item is allowed depends on factors including ingredients, origin and quantity.

Check sweets, pickles, spices, dairy products and homemade foods individually using the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s personal-use guidance. Factory packaging alone does not establish permission.

Canada–India Before-Departure Checklist

  • Check every traveller’s passport, Indian visa or OCI, and return-to-Canada documents.
  • Confirm transit requirements for each connecting country.
  • Verify operating airlines, airport codes and terminal arrangements.
  • Save the baggage allowance and additional-bag prices for every ticket.
  • Resolve domestic connection and baggage recheck questions.
  • Review Indian customs requirements for gifts, jewellery and purchases.
  • Arrange roaming or an eSIM, and save accommodation and pickup details offline.
  • Keep accessible copies of bookings and important documents.
  • Before returning, review Canadian declarations and food-entry rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Canadians Travel to India Without a Visa?

A Canadian citizen without valid OCI generally needs an appropriate visa. OCI holders should check their passport and OCI documentation before travel.

Does Every Canada–India Flight Include Two Checked Bags?

No. Check the exact fare and ticket. Do not use another traveller’s allowance or an older booking as proof of your entitlement.

Can I Use My Canadian Mobile Number in India?

This depends on your provider, plan and roaming arrangements. Check calls, SMS, data and charges separately before departure.

Can I Return to Canada With an Expired PR Card?

If you are outside Canada without a valid PR card, you may need a Permanent Resident Travel Document to board your flight. Follow IRCC’s guidance for your situation.

When Is a Good Time to Visit India From Canada?

Plan around the regions you intend to visit. October to March is often a practical starting point for a North Indian city itinerary, but mountain, coastal and monsoon travel need separate planning. Check local weather, air quality and holiday demand for your dates.
