Measure the Helmet Bag, Not Just the Helmet

Include padding, handles and protruding parts. Check each dimension rather than relying only on the total measurement or weight.

Example: A packed helmet measuring 38 × 29 × 28 cm totals only 95 cm, but its smallest dimension is still greater than both 25 cm and 20 cm. Being below 115 cm overall does not make it compliant with those individual limits.

Can You Bring a Helmet Plus a Cabin Suitcase?

Do not assume so. Air India permits a cabin bag and a small personal item that fits under the seat; that does not establish a helmet exemption. IndiGo also warns that cabin baggage may be checked when overhead space is unavailable.

How to Pack a Motorcycle Helmet for a Flight

It is inaccurate to say that every installed lithium battery is universally banned from checked baggage. General aviation rules distinguish installed devices from spare batteries, while individual airlines can impose stricter restrictions.

What If Your Helmet Is Refused at Airport Security?

1. Ask what caused the refusal: The issue may be the helmet, an attachment, its contents or baggage size.
2. Ask whether the issue can be resolved: Removing an accessory may help only if security approves.
3. Ask staff about returning to check-in: Do not leave the screened area without instructions. Re-entry and another screening may be necessary.
4. Check it only if accepted: The airline must still accept the item before its baggage deadline, and suitable protective packing is needed.

You can carry two checked bags on domestic flights in India when your fare includes two pieces or you purchase the required additional-bag allowance. However, a ticket showing 15 kg does not automatically let you divide that weight between two suitcases for free.

Before packing, check three things: your total checked weight, the number of included pieces and the limit for each individual bag. These are separate conditions, and meeting one does not cancel the others.

Do not assume two lighter bags are free simply because their combined weight is below 15 kg. If your ticket includes one checked piece, taking a second suitcase changes the piece count.

Consider these packing examples for a ticket that includes 15 kg in one checked piece:

Can You Carry 30 kg in Two Checked Bags?

Yes, when your entitlement includes both 30 kg total and two pieces. For example, a 30 kg combined allowance could accommodate two 15 kg bags, provided both meet the applicable dimensions and other conditions.

If you start with 15 kg in one piece, ask whether you need to purchase both another 15 kg and an additional piece. Do not assume a product called “extra baggage” includes both.

Does a 30 kg allowance mean 30 kg per bag?

No. “30 kg in two pieces” normally means 30 kg combined. Two 30 kg bags would total 60 kg.

Can you put the entire allowance in one large suitcase?

Only if the airline’s individual-bag limit and your ticket conditions permit it. For example, Air India specifies a maximum of 32 kg for an individual checked piece. A higher total allowance does not remove that limit. Oversized-bag rules also remain relevant.

Can Family Members Combine Their Baggage Allowances?

Baggage pooling means sharing checked-weight entitlements between passengers. It is different from splitting one passenger’s allowance between two bags.

For example, two travellers with 15 kg each have 30 kg between them. Whether they can pack 20 kg in one traveller’s bag and 10 kg in the other depends on the airline’s pooling rules.

SpiceJet explicitly permits passengers on the same PNR to combine checked baggage, while keeping each bag within its 32 kg maximum. Its published baggage policy gives this condition.

For other airlines, confirm pooling before relying on it. Sharing a surname, travelling as a family or taking the same flight does not by itself establish a combined entitlement.

• Ask whether everyone must check in together.
• Confirm how many pieces the group may check in.
• Keep each suitcase within its individual weight and size limits.

Pooling weight does not automatically waive extra-piece charges. A family can remain within its combined kilograms and still exceed the number of included suitcases.

How Much Does a Second Checked Bag Cost?

Look for three separate entries when pricing your luggage:

• Additional piece: Payment for another suitcase or bag.
• Excess weight: Payment for kilograms beyond the included allowance.
• Oversized baggage: A possible charge for exceeding standard dimensions.

Akasa Air currently lists ₹1,000 per additional domestic checked piece, both prepaid and at the airport. It explicitly states that this piece charge does not include extra weight. Confirm the final price and applicable conditions on its baggage add-ons page.

IndiGo’s fees page currently lists domestic additional-piece prebooking charges starting at ₹1,000 and an airport charge of ₹1,000. Its conditions-of-carriage page displays a different prepaid figure, so use the quote shown for your booking and confirm any discrepancy before paying.

Compare the full price of your fare plus the required bags and weight. A higher fare that includes two pieces may be better value, but that depends on the actual prices for your flight.

What If You Arrive in India With Two International Suitcases?

An international ticket allowing two bags does not automatically give a separately booked domestic ticket the same entitlement. Check both the domestic piece count and its weight allowance before departure.

For example, two international bags weighing 23 kg each total 46 kg. A separate domestic booking showing 15 kg in one piece would leave a difference of 31 kg and one additional piece, unless an applicable connection benefit or baggage purchase changes the entitlement.

Quick answer: Do not rely on a blanket “children under 12 need no ID” rule. Prepare age proof for infants, suitable identification for older children, and the required forms for unaccompanied travel. Aadhaar is not the only possible document.

Can a Child Fly Without ID on a Domestic Flight?

There is an important distinction between airport identity checks and airline documentation. IndiGo’s document page includes an exemption for accompanied infants and minors whose parent or guardian has valid ID. The same page also tells children to carry school or other photo identification and requires infant birth certificates at check-in.

Air India’s current document page states that infants and minors require identity proof. Therefore, a parent’s ID alone should not be treated as sufficient for every airline.

What about the age of 12? Airline fare categories and supervision rules can change around this age. That does not establish a universal airport rule under which every child below 12 needs no documents and every child aged 12 or older follows identical requirements.

Use this as a preparation checklist, not a guarantee that every listed document is interchangeable.

Is a School ID Enough?

IndiGo lists school identification for children. Check that the document meets the airline’s requirements, particularly for an unaccompanied child. A school ID without a date of birth may not resolve an age-verification question.

What Age Proof Does an Infant Need?

IndiGo’s infant policy lists a birth certificate, mother’s hospital discharge summary, vaccination certificate or passport as acceptable age evidence. Its policy warns that missing proof can result in a full-fare charge, subject to seat availability.

Does a 2.5-Year-Old Need a Flight Ticket and Seat?

Yes. A child aged two-and-a-half is outside the under-two infant category and needs a ticket with a separate seat. Infant pricing cannot be used simply because the child is small enough to sit on an adult’s lap.

What If My Child Turns Two Before the Return Flight?

Give the airline the date of birth and both travel dates before booking. Do not assume an outbound infant booking covers the return after the second birthday.

Can You Show Your Child’s Documents on a Phone?

Official digital documents and ordinary photographs are different. The BCAS circular accepts Aadhaar and driving licences presented through DigiLocker’s Issued Documents section; self-uploaded documents do not receive the same recognition under that circular.

Do not extend that rule automatically to every scanned birth certificate or school ID. Confirm the airline’s accepted format and carry a physical backup when possible.

What If the Ticket Name Does Not Match?

Book using the child’s name as shown on the document you will present. Ask the airline to resolve spelling errors or missing-name issues before departure. Do not assume a small difference is automatically accepted.

Can a Minor Travel Alone on an Indian Flight?

Yes, subject to the airline’s age rules and service availability. Being legally under 18 does not mean every teenager must use an unaccompanied-minor service.

Can a 14-Year-Old Fly Alone Domestically?

IndiGo’s published age bands permit this, with Flying Solo assistance available on request. The teenager still needs accepted identification. Confirm the rules for the operating carrier, especially for connecting flights.

Documents and Handover

Air India requests the child’s government-issued ID for domestic UM travel, originals for verification, and completed forms. It specifies document submission at least six hours before departure and airport reporting at least three hours before departure.

IndiGo requires photo ID for the child and parent or guardian. Its nominated receiving adult must show original photo ID. SpiceJet likewise requires photo identification and a signed UM form.

Arrange the service early. There is no universal “48 hours for every airline” rule. Connections, overnight stops and flights operated by another carrier can affect acceptance.

Can Grandparents or Other Relatives Travel With a Child?

Check the airline’s accompanied-child requirements before booking. Prepare the child’s documents, the accompanying adult’s ID and parental authorisation where required.

Air India specifically lists consent and supporting parentage/identity documents for an infant travelling with an adult who is not the legal parent or guardian. Contact the airline about its submission and original-document requirements rather than assuming a simple letter is sufficient.

What About Travel With Only One Parent?

For international travel, check the departure, transit and destination requirements for parental consent, birth certificates and custody documents. Notarisation is not a universal requirement for every family journey, but a particular country or circumstance may require it.

What Documents Do Children Need Internationally?

For ordinary international travel, prepare a separate valid passport for each child, including infants, plus the required visa, residence permission or OCI documentation. Check destination-specific passport validity and consent requirements.

Do not describe passports as mandatory “with no exceptions”: certain nationality-and-route arrangements have alternative documentation rules. Obtain confirmation for the exact itinerary before relying on an exception.

Foreign-Passport and OCI Children

An OCI card is not a passport. A foreign-passport child travelling on OCI status should carry the current foreign passport and OCI documentation. A foreign child without OCI needs the applicable Indian entry permission; having an Indian parent does not automatically replace it.

For domestic IndiGo travel, its document policy identifies the passport as the valid photo ID for foreign nationals.

No. It is useful for age and parentage, but it does not replace photo ID where the airline requires it. Confirm acceptance for your child’s age and travel arrangement.

Can my baby fly if the birth certificate is still being issued?

Need to send a message or check email while flying within India? Air India offers internet Wi-Fi on select domestic flights. However, onboard connectivity still depends on your aircraft, and connecting to an airline’s wireless entertainment network does not necessarily give you internet access.

How to Connect to Air India Wi-Fi

1. Look for the “Wi-Fi Onboard” indicator in Flight Status or web check-in.
2. When service opens at 10,500 feet or above, keep airplane mode enabled and connect to “Air India Wi-Fi”.
3. Open wifi.airindia.com if the portal does not appear.
4. Verify your surname, PNR or final four ticket digits, email and phone number.
5. Select your entitlement or package and complete payment where required.

Air India accepts mobile UPI payments and international credit/debit cards without OTP authentication.

Package limits: Paid access covers one device and one flight segment. Plans cannot be paused or transferred between devices. Choose your device before purchasing.

Does IndiGo Offer Wi-Fi on Domestic or International Flights?

Do not expect internet access on an IndiGo-operated flight unless the airline specifically confirms it for your departure. An operational passenger internet service on IndiGo’s domestic or international flights could not be verified for this update.

IndiGo announced a limited trial of Hello 6E wireless entertainment on the Delhi–Goa sector starting in May 2024. This allowed passengers to access entertainment through the IndiGo app; it was not an internet service for email, WhatsApp or general browsing. A wider rollout has not been verified for this guide. Why Does My Phone Show Wi-Fi Without Internet?

A plane can use a local wireless network to deliver stored movies and music to your device. Reaching websites or sending messages outside the aircraft requires an additional internet connection.

Likewise, SpiceJet’s SpiceScreen is presented as an entertainment service. Seeing its network name does not prove that ordinary internet browsing is available.

Yes, you can bring gold jewellery from Dubai to India, subject to Indian customs rules. Whether it enters duty-free depends on your circumstances, the jewellery you carry and the allowance or procedure that applies.

A necklace bought during a short Dubai holiday is not automatically treated the same as your existing everyday jewellery. Jewellery brought temporarily for a wedding also needs to be distinguished from purchases or gifts that will remain in India.

Quick answer: The special duty-free jewellery allowance applies to an eligible resident or tourist of Indian origin returning after residing abroad for more than one year. The allowance is 40 grams for a female passenger and 20 grams for a passenger other than a female. The 2026 rules removed the previous rupee value caps. CBIC’s international traveller guide recognises duty-free treatment for used personal jewellery needed for daily use during travel. It separately addresses other jewellery and temporary imports. There is no blanket exemption for everything a passenger describes as “personal gold.”

What Is the Duty-Free Jewellery Allowance in 2026?

The Baggage Rules, 2026 took effect on 2 February 2026. Their special jewellery allowance is based on weight.

Eligibility matters: Rule 6 applies to a resident or tourist of Indian origin who has resided abroad for more than one year and returns with the jewellery in bona fide baggage. See the official Baggage Rules, 2026.

The old ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh value caps are no longer part of this special allowance. Removing those caps does not remove the residence requirement or turn the weight limits into an allowance for all arrivals.

Examples: A qualifying female passenger carrying 35 grams is within the special allowance’s weight limit. A qualifying passenger other than a female carrying 25 grams exceeds the corresponding limit. Customs still needs to establish the relevant facts and treatment of the jewellery.

Can You Buy Jewellery on a Short Dubai Holiday and Bring It Back?

You should not claim the special long-stay jewellery allowance merely because the purchase weighs less than 20 or 40 grams. A short holiday does not satisfy its more-than-one-year residence condition.

The general baggage allowance is a separate provision. Rule 5 provides a value-based allowance for eligible passengers, while Annexure I excludes gold and silver in forms other than ornaments. Do not assume either that the general allowance can never apply to jewellery or that it automatically clears every new purchase.

Before buying, ask arrival Customs how your jewellery would be assessed under your passenger category, travel history and other baggage allowances already used. General allowances cannot be pooled between passengers. Source: Rule 5 and Annexure I.

Does Wearing Gold Jewellery Make It Duty-Free?

Wearing a newly purchased chain does not, by itself, establish an exemption. The relevant distinction is whether the jewellery qualifies under the applicable customs provision, not whether it is around your neck or inside a jewellery case.

CBIC distinguishes everyday used personal jewellery from other jewellery being brought into India. Keep an accurate account of what you already owned, what you bought during the trip and what is intended as a gift.

Can You Bring More Gold by Paying Customs Duty?

A separate passenger-import route exists for eligible gold imports. CBIC’s 2026 customs FAQ describes conditions including:

• Indian origin or a valid Indian passport.
• A stay abroad of at least six months.
• Payment of duty in convertible foreign currency.
• A maximum of one kilogram per eligible passenger under the relevant notification.

These conditions relate to a duty-paid import route. They do not make one kilogram duty-free, and they should not be confused with the more-than-one-year requirement for the special jewellery allowance.

Confirm the current notification’s full conditions, including the treatment of short visits to India and the type of jewellery. Do not assume plain gold and jewellery studded with stones or pearls receive identical treatment.

What duty rate should you budget for?

Obtain a current assessment for your specific jewellery before relying on an online percentage. The government revised precious-metal import duties from 13 May 2026, as recorded in this official trade circular linking the Indian notifications. Some passenger-facing guidance still displays older rates.

A general bullion-duty headline does not establish the final duty on every finished necklace, studded ornament or passenger category. Ask Customs which classification, valuation and current notification apply. Keep the Dubai invoice, but do not assume the retail price alone determines the assessment.

What Documents Should You Carry?

Prepare a simple item list and keep supporting records accessible:

• Purchase invoice: Seller details, purchase date, price and description.
• Weight and purity details: Ask the jeweller to distinguish the metal weight from stones and other components.
• Item photographs: Clear pictures that help identify each piece.
• Travel and residence records: Passport and supporting evidence for any stay-abroad condition you claim.
• Earlier ownership records: Available invoices or customs documents for existing jewellery.
• Relevant certificates: An export certificate or temporary-import documentation where applicable.

An invoice supports your explanation; it does not replace a declaration or establish duty-free eligibility by itself.

How Do You Declare Gold Jewellery on Arrival in India?

Mumbai Customs’ arrival guidance directs passengers with dutiable goods, restricted goods or goods exceeding their eligible allowance to declare them and use the Red Channel. Electronic declaration is available through ATITHI.

1. Review your jewellery before arrival: Separate new purchases, gifts, existing personal items and anything intended for re-export in your item list.
2. Declare where required: Give accurate descriptions, weights and values.
3. Present supporting documents: Explain the allowance or procedure you believe applies.
4. Ask for the assessment: Confirm the duty calculation and official payment arrangements.
5. Keep the paperwork: Retain duty receipts, certificates and any written record issued by Customs.

If uncertain, ask before leaving through the Green Channel. A shopkeeper’s assurance that “everyone carries this much” does not determine Indian customs treatment. Non-declaration or misdeclaration can lead to action under customs law.

What If You Are Bringing Wedding Jewellery and Taking It Back?

Tell Customs that the jewellery is temporary and will leave India with you. CBIC’s traveller guide describes a Temporary Baggage Import Certificate for jewellery brought for an event and subsequently taken back.

Request the procedure on arrival and follow the certificate’s conditions. Jewellery given to relatives or left in India should not be represented as an item you intend to re-export.

Taking Jewellery From India to Dubai and Bringing It Back

For valuable jewellery that you already own in India, arrange the appropriate departure documentation before travelling. Mumbai Customs’ export-certificate guidance explains Form CBD-III and recommends retaining ownership records for re-import.

Contact the departure Customs office early: jewellery identification or valuation arrangements may require advance preparation. Keep the certificate with your travel records and present the matching items when returning.

Photographs and invoices can help identify jewellery, but do not treat them as automatic substitutes for a required customs certificate.

• Establish which allowance or import route applies to you.
• Check your complete travel history against the eligibility conditions.
• Ask for an itemised invoice showing weight, purity and stone details.

Price-comparison tip: Compare the total cost of bringing the jewellery home, rather than the Dubai gold price per gram alone. A lower shop price does not necessarily mean a lower final cost.
