Traveling to India With Laptops: Customs & Flight Rules
You can travel to India with more than one laptop, but customs rules and airline baggage rules answer two different questions. Indian customs does not impose a simple “maximum two laptops” rule. Used laptops that are genuinely your personal or work devices can be treated differently from newly purchased laptops, gifts or multiple computers that appear to be brought for resale.
There is also a valuable customs concession many travelers miss: under India's Baggage Rules, 2026, a passenger 18 years or older, other than a crew member, may bring one new laptop or notepad computer duty-free in bona fide baggage. This is separate from the general ₹75,000 baggage allowance available to many residents, NRIs, OCI travelers and other qualifying passengers.
On the aircraft, laptops are best kept in cabin baggage. Air India and IndiGo currently allow a standard 7 kg cabin bag in Economy plus a small personal item such as a laptop bag weighing up to 3 kg, subject to their current baggage conditions.
Quick answer: One used personal laptop is normally straightforward. A business traveler carrying a used work laptop plus a used personal laptop can also have a legitimate reason for carrying two. There is no automatic customs tax merely because you have laptop number two or three. The situation changes when additional laptops are new, boxed, high-value or appear commercial.

How Many Laptops Can You Carry to India?
There is no Indian customs rule saying that every passenger is limited to exactly one or two laptops.
The number alone does not determine whether duty is payable.
Consider these very different situations:
| What You're Carrying | Customs Situation |
|---|---|
| 1 used personal laptop | Typically straightforward personal-use situation |
| 1 used personal + 1 used work laptop | Can have a clear legitimate business/personal purpose |
| 2 used laptops + old backup laptop | May be questioned, but not automatically dutiable |
| 1 used laptop + 1 new laptop | New-laptop exemption may apply if passenger is 18+ |
| 1 used laptop + 2 new laptops | One new laptop can receive specific exemption; other new goods require separate customs consideration |
| 3 identical new boxed laptops | Higher chance of commercial-intent questions |
The important distinction is not simply “one vs two laptops.” Customs looks at whether the devices are used personal effects, new purchases, gifts, bona fide passenger baggage or goods being imported for commercial purposes.
How Many Laptops Are Officially Allowed on Indian Flights?
Customs law and airline rules should not be mixed together.
Customs: determines whether goods entering India are duty-free or dutiable.
Airline/security rules: determine how many electronic devices can safely travel aboard the aircraft and where they can be packed.
There is no blanket Indian customs rule saying:
- Only one laptop may enter India
- Only two laptops may enter India
- The third laptop is automatically taxable
Likewise, an airline allowing several portable electronic devices does not mean every new laptop is automatically duty-free at Indian customs.
One New Laptop Duty-Free: What Changed in 2026?
The Baggage Rules, 2026 contain a very clear laptop concession.
A passenger who is:
- 18 years of age or older
- Not a crew member
may bring:
One new laptop, including a notepad computer, duty-free in bona fide baggage.
This is important: the rule specifically says one new laptop. It is not merely an exemption for the old laptop you already use.
The Laptop Exemption Is Separate From the ₹75,000 Allowance
The one-new-laptop provision appears separately in Rule 5 from the general free allowance.
Therefore, an eligible adult passenger can have:
- Used personal effects qualifying under the personal-effects rules
- The applicable general free allowance
- One new laptop under the specific laptop concession
subject to all applicable baggage conditions.
Old age rule is obsolete: older baggage guidance often said passengers aged 18 or sometimes 10 years and above. The current Baggage Rules, 2026 specifically set the new-laptop concession at 18 years or older.
What About Used Personal and Work Laptops?
The one-new-laptop concession should not be confused with the treatment of used personal effects.
The Baggage Rules separately allow duty-free clearance of used personal effects required for satisfying daily necessities of life, subject to the rules and exclusions.
A laptop you have genuinely been using for work or personal purposes can therefore present a different customs situation from a newly purchased boxed computer.
Signs of Genuine Personal or Work Use
- The laptop has been used before the trip.
- Your files and software are installed.
- It belongs to your employer.
- You regularly travel with it for business.
- It shows ordinary signs of use.
- You have a reasonable explanation for carrying it.
Do not rely on artificial “used” tricks. Opening the box and starting a brand-new laptop before landing does not automatically make it a long-standing personal effect.
What Is the “2-Laptop Customs Rule” for India?
There really isn't a written rule saying:
“One laptop is free and the second laptop is automatically taxed.”
This internet shortcut overlooks the distinction between:
- Used personal effects
- One specifically exempt new laptop
- Goods covered by the general free allowance
- Dutiable goods
- Commercial imports
Example: Two Used Laptops
You are a software engineer traveling from the United States with:
- Your employer-issued MacBook Pro
- Your personally owned Windows laptop
There is no automatic rule requiring customs duty simply because you have two laptops.
Example: One Used Laptop + One New Laptop
An eligible passenger aged 18 or older may be able to use the specific one-new-laptop concession for the new machine while the genuinely used laptop is considered separately under the personal-effects rules.
Example: Two New Laptops
The specific concession covers one new laptop.
The second new laptop does not receive a second identical laptop exemption simply because you are carrying two computers.
Its value and customs treatment must be considered separately, including whether any available general allowance applies.
Can You Carry 3 Laptops to India?
Yes, carrying three laptops is not automatically prohibited.
But the reason for carrying them becomes increasingly relevant.
| Three-Laptop Scenario | What Customs May Consider |
|---|---|
| Company laptop + personal laptop + old backup | Potentially legitimate personal/business use |
| Two used laptops + one new laptop | New-laptop exemption may apply to the new unit for eligible passenger |
| One used + two new laptops | Second new laptop needs separate customs treatment |
| Three identical new laptops | Could raise commercial-intent concerns |
| Three laptops for resale | Not normal personal baggage |
There is no automatic “third laptop duty.” The important question is what each laptop is and why you are carrying it.
Business Traveler With Company Laptop + Personal Laptop
This is one of the most common two-laptop situations.
A traveler may need:
- Company-managed laptop for work
- Personal laptop for private use
- Different operating systems for development or testing
- Separate secure corporate device
If both are genuine used devices, their treatment is very different from carrying two unopened computers for friends.
Business traveler: if the work laptop belongs to your employer, keeping an asset tag, company identification or documentation showing company ownership can help explain why you are carrying multiple computers if anyone asks.
Can You Carry an Old Laptop and a New Boxed Laptop Together?
Yes.
This is actually one of the situations where the 2026 rules are useful.
An adult traveler might have:
- One genuinely used personal laptop
- One new laptop purchased abroad
The used machine can be considered under the personal-effects provisions, while the Baggage Rules separately provide a duty-free concession for one new laptop for passengers age 18 and above.
You do not have to throw away the new laptop box to obtain the laptop concession. The law specifically provides for one new laptop.
Can You Carry Two Laptops From Dubai to India?
Yes. Arriving from Dubai does not create a separate two-laptop customs rule.
For example:
Used Personal Laptop + Used Work Laptop
This can be a normal personal/business travel situation.
Used Laptop + New Laptop From Dubai
The one-new-laptop concession may apply to the new laptop if you are an eligible passenger aged 18 or above.
Two New Laptops From Dubai
The specific exemption covers only one new laptop. The second laptop needs to be assessed under the remaining applicable baggage rules.
Dubai Duty Free does not mean India customs duty-free. Goods purchased duty-free at the departure airport are still subject to Indian baggage rules when you enter India.
How Does the ₹75,000 Customs Allowance Affect Laptops?
India's Baggage Rules, 2026 took effect on February 2, 2026.
For passengers arriving other than by land, the general free allowance is currently:
| Passenger | General Free Allowance |
|---|---|
| Resident | ₹75,000 |
| Tourist of Indian origin | ₹75,000 |
| Qualifying foreigner with a non-tourist visa | ₹75,000 |
| Tourist of foreign origin | ₹25,000 |
The Customs Baggage Declaration Regulations specifically include NRIs and OCI cardholders within the term “tourist of Indian origin.”
Another important rule: one passenger's free allowance cannot be pooled with another passenger's allowance.
Does the New Laptop Use Up the ₹75,000?
The Baggage Rules separately provide the one-new-laptop concession for eligible passengers age 18 and above.
This means the special laptop exemption should not simply be described as “your laptop is included inside the ₹75,000 allowance.”
That was one of the weaknesses in older baggage-rule explanations.
How Is Customs Duty Calculated on an Extra Laptop?
If an additional laptop does not qualify as a used personal effect, the one-new-laptop exemption or another applicable allowance, Customs may assess it as dutiable baggage.
The standard baggage tariff commonly applies basic customs duty at 35%, with the applicable Social Welfare Surcharge producing an effective rate of approximately 38.5% for ordinary dutiable baggage under the relevant baggage heading.
However, actual assessment depends on:
- Whether the article is dutiable
- Available free allowance
- Assessable value
- Applicable customs notification
- Whether a special tariff treatment applies
Don't Use the Laptop's Commercial Import GST Rate
One common mistake is to search the normal import tariff for laptops and conclude that passenger baggage will simply be charged 18% IGST.
Passenger baggage can be assessed under the baggage tariff framework instead.
The old version of this article used an oversimplified “18%+” laptop duty calculation. Do not use that as the default passenger-baggage rate.
Do You Need to Declare Your Laptop at Indian Customs?
Not merely because you have two laptops.
The 2026 declaration regulations require passengers carrying dutiable or prohibited goods to make the required declaration before entering the Green Channel.
Examples where you should pay closer attention include:
- Additional new laptop not covered by an exemption or available allowance
- Several new computers
- Commercial quantities
- Other dutiable goods that put you over your allowance
A passenger carrying a genuine used work laptop and genuine used personal laptop does not automatically have to declare simply because there are two devices.
Key correction: “Two laptops = mandatory Red Channel” is not an Indian customs rule.
Red Channel vs Green Channel
| Channel | Use |
|---|---|
| Green Channel | Passenger is not required to report dutiable or prohibited goods |
| Red Channel | Passenger is declaring goods for duty payment or goods subject to applicable customs controls |
The 2026 system also supports electronic baggage declarations through the Customs automated system, including ICEGATE/ATITHI, and advance filing can be made up to three days before arrival.
If you're unsure about a very expensive second new laptop, declaring and asking Customs is safer than trying to hide it among clothing.
Domestic vs International: Does It Matter?
Yes—a lot.
International Arrival in India
Customs rules matter because you are importing goods into India.
Domestic Flight Within India
For a trip such as:
- Delhi → Bengaluru
- Mumbai → Kochi
- Hyderabad → Chennai
you are not importing the laptops into India at that point.
The primary issues are:
- Airline cabin baggage allowance
- Number of permitted baggage pieces
- Battery capacity
- Security screening
- Safe stowage
International-to-domestic connection: If you arrive from Dubai at Mumbai and then fly to Kochi, the customs question arises when you enter India—not because of the later domestic sector.
Can I Carry 3 Laptops on an IndiGo Domestic Flight?
IndiGo does not publish a rule limiting passengers to one or two laptops.
Its current lithium-battery policy permits, subject to security clearance, up to 15 portable electronic devices per customer when each device uses:
- Lithium-ion battery not exceeding 100 Wh, or
- Lithium-metal battery within the specified lithium-content limit
That does not mean you may board with 15 separate laptop bags.
Your laptops still need to fit within the baggage allowance.
Current Standard IndiGo Cabin Allowance
- One hand bag up to 7 kg
- Maximum dimensions 55 × 35 × 25 cm
- Plus one personal article, such as a small laptop bag, up to 3 kg
Therefore, three laptops may be possible if the devices comply with battery rules and all of them fit within the permitted cabin baggage pieces and weight.
Three laptops do not mean three free laptop bags. IndiGo permits one additional personal article—not one personal item for every computer.
Can You Carry 2 Laptops on Air India?
Air India likewise does not publish a simple “only one laptop device” rule for normal travel.
Its current Economy/Premium Economy cabin allowance includes:
- One standard cabin bag up to 7 kg
- One additional small personal item up to 3 kg
A laptop/notebook in a bag is specifically listed as an eligible personal item.
Therefore, a traveler could keep one laptop in the main cabin bag and another in the permitted laptop bag, provided all size, weight, battery and security requirements are met.
Is a Laptop Included in the 7 kg Cabin Bag?
It depends on how you pack it and the airline's personal-item rule.
IndiGo
IndiGo currently allows:
- One main cabin bag up to 7 kg
- One additional personal article such as a small laptop bag up to 3 kg
If the laptop is inside the 7 kg roller bag, its weight obviously forms part of that bag's 7 kg.
If it is in the permitted separate laptop bag, the current additional-personal-item rule allows that article up to 3 kg.
Air India
Air India currently has a similar structure for Economy and Premium Economy:
- 7 kg standard cabin baggage
- One small personal item, including laptop/notebook bag, up to 3 kg
This directly answers the common question: your laptop does not always have to fit inside the airline's 7 kg main cabin bag. Both Air India and IndiGo currently permit a separate qualifying laptop/personal-item bag up to 3 kg under their standard published rules.
Is a Laptop Counted as Hand Baggage on IndiGo?
A laptop can be packed inside your main hand baggage, or you can use IndiGo's additional personal-item allowance for a small laptop bag.
The important distinction is:
| Bag | Current IndiGo Standard Allowance |
|---|---|
| Main cabin bag | 1 piece up to 7 kg |
| Additional personal article/laptop bag | 1 article up to 3 kg |
Check your ticket for codeshares or unusual fare/aircraft conditions because airline baggage rules can differ by itinerary.
Can You Keep a Laptop in Check-In Baggage in India?
Cabin baggage is the better choice, and some airlines impose stricter restrictions than others.
Air India
Air India's current restricted-baggage guidance lists laptops/computers with lithium batteries up to 100 Wh as:
- Carry-on: Yes
- Check-in: No
For flights departing India, Air India says that if a laptop is placed in checked baggage, the battery must be removed and carried in cabin baggage.
IndiGo
IndiGo recommends carrying portable electronic devices in hand baggage.
Its published policy says that if a permitted portable electronic device is placed in checked baggage, it should be:
- Completely switched off
- Packed securely against damage
Because airlines can impose stricter rules than general battery standards, check the operating carrier rather than assuming one rule applies to every flight.
Never put a spare laptop battery or power bank in checked baggage. Spare lithium batteries and power banks belong in cabin baggage.
Why Is Cabin Baggage Strongly Recommended for Laptops?
Even when an airline permits a laptop in checked baggage under specified conditions, the cabin is usually the smarter place for it.
Less Physical Damage
Checked baggage can be:
- Dropped
- Stacked under heavier luggage
- Moved through automated baggage systems
- Loaded and unloaded multiple times during connections
A laptop screen, hinge or chassis is much less tolerant of rough handling than clothing.
Lower Loss and Theft Exposure
A laptop kept under the seat or in your nearby cabin bag remains under your control.
Better Battery Safety
A lithium-battery problem is easier for the crew to detect and respond to when the device is in the passenger cabin.
You Still Have the Laptop if Checked Baggage Is Delayed
For a business traveler, losing clothing for a day is inconvenient. Losing the only work computer can stop the entire trip.
Best practice: Keep the laptop, medicines, passport, valuables and essential work equipment with you in the cabin whenever permitted.
How Do Battery Watt-Hour Rules Affect Laptop Carriage?
The key number to check is the battery's Watt-hour rating (Wh).
| Battery | Practical Rule |
|---|---|
| Up to 100 Wh | Normal laptop range; generally accepted subject to airline rules |
| Over 100 Wh up to 160 Wh | Airline approval may be required |
| Over 160 Wh | Generally outside normal passenger-baggage allowance for consumer laptop batteries |
Where Do You Find the Watt-Hour Rating?
Look for:
- Battery label
- Laptop technical specifications
- Manufacturer website
- Battery specifications in system information
If the battery lists voltage and amp-hours instead:
Wh = Volts × Amp-hours
Are Gaming Laptops With a 99 Wh Battery Allowed?
Usually yes.
A 99 Wh installed lithium-ion battery falls just below the common 100 Wh threshold.
For example, Air India's current laptop rule allows lithium-ion laptop batteries not exceeding 100 Wh in cabin baggage.
IndiGo likewise permits portable electronic devices with lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh under its normal PED provisions, subject to security clearance.
This is why many high-performance gaming laptops deliberately use batteries around 99 Wh rather than exceeding 100 Wh.
What If My Laptop Battery Is Over 100 Wh?
Do not assume it is prohibited without checking—but do not show up at the airport without approval either.
IndiGo currently says that, with prior airline approval and security clearance, a passenger may carry up to two portable electronic devices whose lithium-ion batteries are:
Over 100 Wh but not more than 160 Wh.
IndiGo currently asks customers to obtain prior approval at least 24 hours before departure for this category.
Other airlines may have different approval processes.
Large workstation or specialized laptop: check the actual battery label. Do not assume every laptop automatically falls under 100 Wh.
Can You Carry a Laptop Power Bank or Spare Battery?
Spare batteries and power banks receive stricter treatment than batteries installed inside a laptop.
They should be carried in cabin baggage.
Do not place them in checked baggage.
Current airline rules may also restrict:
- Number of spare batteries
- Battery capacity
- How terminals are protected
- Where power banks may be stored in the cabin
- Whether they may be used or charged onboard
See Power Bank Rules on Flights in India and Lithium Batteries on India Flights.
What Happens During Laptop Security Screening in India?
Your cabin baggage and electronics are subject to airport security screening.
At many security lanes, passengers are asked to take laptops or larger electronics out so they can be screened clearly.
However, screening procedures can vary with:
- Airport
- Security lane
- Screening equipment
- Current security procedures
- Instructions from CISF/security staff
Pack for easy removal: keep the laptop near the top of the bag or in a dedicated compartment so you can remove it quickly if security asks.
Do You Always Have to Put the Laptop in a Separate Tray?
Follow the instructions at the checkpoint.
Do not rely on an old article saying BCAS requires the exact same separate-tray procedure at every airport and every screening lane. Newer screening technology can change how electronics are handled.
Can Airport Security Ask You to Turn On Your Laptop?
Security personnel can carry out additional screening when necessary.
For that reason, traveling with some battery charge is sensible.
But powering on every laptop is not a routine requirement for every passenger at every Indian airport.
Practical advice: do not arrive with a completely dead laptop if you can avoid it, especially when traveling internationally through multiple security checkpoints.
Are iPads, Tablets and Kindles Counted as Laptops?
Not for the specific one-new-laptop customs concession.
The 2026 rule specifically refers to:
“one new laptop including notepad.”
It does not say:
- One laptop plus one new iPad
- One tablet instead of a laptop
- One Kindle
- One of every type of computer
A used personal tablet can potentially be considered under the normal personal-effects principles, while a new iPad or tablet may need to be considered against the applicable general baggage allowance.
Do not apply the one-new-laptop exemption automatically to a new iPad. The rules specifically distinguish laptops/notepads from tablets in other baggage provisions.
If you are bringing a U.S. cellular iPad, see Will a U.S. iPad Cellular Work in India?.
When Do 3 or More Laptops Trigger Commercial-Intent Concerns?
There is no written rule saying:
“Three laptops = commercial import.”
But the Baggage Rules define personal effects in a way that excludes goods imported for commercial purposes.
Customs may look more closely when you carry:
- Several identical laptops
- Several factory-sealed units
- Multiple units of the newest model
- Computers with no evidence of personal/work use
- Large quantities inconsistent with normal travel
- Devices intended for resale
Three Used Developer Laptops
A software engineer carrying a:
- Corporate MacBook
- Personal Windows laptop
- Linux development/testing machine
can have a credible professional reason for all three.
Three New MacBooks
Three sealed identical MacBooks brought for different friends present a much less convincing personal-effects case.
The number is a clue, not the rule. Customs looks at the actual circumstances.
Should You Carry Laptop Purchase Receipts?
You do not need to travel forever with the original receipt for every old laptop you own.
But an invoice can be useful when carrying:
- Brand-new laptop
- Very expensive workstation
- Recently purchased computer
- Second new laptop
- Device whose value may need customs assessment
A digital receipt in your email or cloud storage is usually much easier to keep than carrying years of paper invoices.
If Customs needs to value a new laptop, an authentic invoice gives you much better evidence than arguing about an online price at the counter.
Taking an Expensive Indian Laptop Abroad and Bringing It Back
If you already own an expensive laptop in India and are taking it abroad temporarily, you may want evidence that it left India with you.
Under the 2026 Baggage Rules, certain personal effects taken out earlier can be re-imported duty-free when the required departure declaration has been made electronically or otherwise and Customs is satisfied.
This is the legal idea behind what travelers often call a:
- Export certificate
- Travel export certificate
- Temporary export declaration
There is no universal “₹1 lakh laptop must get an export certificate” threshold written into the current Baggage Rules. The point of departure documentation is to establish that the item was already taken out of India rather than newly purchased abroad.
See India Customs Export Certificates: Traveler Guide for Valuables and India Travel Export Certificate for High-Value Items.
How Many Laptops Can a Software Engineer Carry for Work?
There is no special software-engineer laptop quota.
Instead, consider both customs and airline rules.
International Arrival
Be able to explain why the devices are needed.
Useful evidence can include:
- Employer asset tag
- Company login screen
- Corporate travel documentation
- Different laptops for separate clients or systems
- Proof that one or more devices belong to the employer
On the Aircraft
Make sure all computers:
- Fit within your permitted cabin baggage pieces
- Stay within the weight allowance
- Meet battery limits
- Can be screened efficiently
Three legitimate work computers may be easier to explain than two brand-new sealed laptops being delivered to other people.
Laptop Checklist Before Flying to India
- Check whether each laptop is used or newly purchased.
- If bringing one new laptop, remember the special 18+ duty-free concession.
- Check your general customs allowance for other purchases.
- Keep invoices for new high-value laptops.
- Check battery Watt-hours.
- Get airline approval if a battery exceeds 100 Wh where required.
- Keep laptops in cabin baggage whenever possible.
- Keep power banks and spare batteries in cabin baggage only.
- Check cabin bag and laptop-bag weight separately.
- Remember that one laptop bag does not mean unlimited laptop bags.
- Keep laptops easy to remove for security screening.
- Keep some battery charge available.
- If carrying several new laptops, consider customs declaration before entering Green Channel.
- If taking an Indian high-value device abroad, consider documenting its departure.
Common Laptop Travel Mistakes
| Don't Do This | Do This Instead |
|---|---|
| Assume only one laptop can enter India | Separate used personal effects from the new-laptop exemption |
| Assume every second laptop is automatically taxed | Look at whether it is used, new, personal, work or commercial |
| Use the old age-10 laptop rule | Current new-laptop concession applies at age 18+ |
| Assume two laptops always require Red Channel | Declaration depends on whether you have dutiable/prohibited goods |
| Calculate passenger laptop duty using only normal GST/IGST | Check the applicable baggage tariff and allowance |
| Put a power bank in checked luggage | Keep spare lithium batteries and power banks in the cabin |
| Assume every airline permits laptop in checked baggage | Check your operating airline; Air India currently restricts battery-equipped laptops from check-in |
| Bring three separate laptop bags | Fit devices within the airline's permitted cabin pieces |
| Assume iPad gets the special laptop exemption | Treat the tablet separately under applicable customs rules |
| Throw away the invoice for a new expensive computer | Keep a digital copy for valuation if needed |
Bottom line: India does not impose a simple one-, two- or three-laptop customs limit. A passenger 18 or older can currently bring one new laptop duty-free under a specific 2026 concession, while genuine used personal laptops can be considered separately under personal-effects rules. Multiple laptops are possible, but new boxed computers, commercial quantities, baggage weight and lithium-battery rules all need separate attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many laptops can I carry to India?
India does not publish a fixed one-, two- or three-laptop customs limit. Used personal and work laptops, one new laptop under the specific exemption, additional new computers and commercial quantities can all receive different treatment.
Can I bring one new laptop to India duty-free?
Yes. Under the Baggage Rules, 2026, a passenger age 18 or older, other than a crew member, can bring one new laptop including a notepad computer duty-free in bona fide baggage.
Is the one new laptop included in the ₹75,000 allowance?
The one-new-laptop provision is a separate specific concession within the Baggage Rules rather than merely being described as part of the ₹75,000 general free allowance.
Can I bring two used laptops to India?
Yes. There is no automatic duty simply because you have two used laptops. Customs can consider whether they are genuine personal or work devices and the circumstances of the trip.
Can I carry three laptops to India?
Yes, three laptops are not automatically prohibited or dutiable. Three genuine personal/work machines are different from three new boxed laptops intended for other people or resale.
Can I carry a company laptop and personal laptop?
Yes. This is a common business-travel situation. If both are genuine used devices, there is no rule automatically imposing customs duty because you are carrying two laptops.
Can I carry an old laptop and a new laptop together?
Yes. An eligible passenger age 18 or older may qualify for the specific one-new-laptop concession, while the genuinely used laptop can be considered separately under the personal-effects rules.
Can I carry two laptops from Dubai to India?
Yes. A used personal or work laptop plus one new laptop can be a straightforward situation, particularly because eligible adults have a specific one-new-laptop customs concession. Two new laptops require additional customs consideration because only one receives that specific exemption.
Do I need to declare two laptops at Indian customs?
Not automatically. The 2026 regulations require declaration when you are carrying dutiable or prohibited goods. Merely possessing two genuine used personal/work laptops does not itself create a mandatory declaration rule.
Can I carry 3 laptops on a domestic IndiGo flight?
IndiGo does not publish a one- or two-laptop device limit. Its current policy permits up to 15 portable electronic devices with batteries up to 100 Wh, subject to security clearance, but your three laptops must still fit within the permitted cabin baggage pieces and weight.
Is my laptop included in IndiGo's 7 kg cabin baggage?
If the laptop is packed inside the main cabin bag, its weight counts toward that bag's 7 kg limit. IndiGo currently also permits one additional personal article such as a small laptop bag weighing up to 3 kg.
Is my laptop included in Air India's 7 kg cabin allowance?
If it is inside the main cabin bag, yes. Air India currently also permits one additional personal item, including a laptop/notebook bag, weighing up to 3 kg and fitting within its personal-item dimensions.
Can I put my laptop in checked baggage?
Check your operating airline. Air India currently does not allow a laptop containing its lithium battery as checked baggage and says the battery must be removed for check-in on flights departing India. IndiGo recommends carrying electronics in cabin baggage and imposes conditions if permitted devices are checked.
Why should laptops be carried in cabin baggage?
The cabin reduces exposure to rough baggage handling, loss and damage, keeps the device accessible, and makes lithium-battery problems easier to detect and manage.
Is a gaming laptop with a 99 Wh battery allowed?
Generally yes under the normal lithium-ion threshold used by Air India and IndiGo, because 99 Wh is below 100 Wh. Normal baggage and security requirements still apply.
What if my laptop battery is over 100 Wh?
Airline approval may be required. IndiGo currently permits up to two portable electronic devices with lithium-ion batteries over 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh with prior approval and security clearance.
Can I carry a laptop power bank in checked baggage?
No. Power banks and spare lithium batteries should be carried in cabin baggage subject to the airline's quantity and capacity limits.
Do I have to remove my laptop at Indian airport security?
Many security lanes ask passengers to remove laptops or large electronics for screening. Follow the instructions at your specific airport and lane because screening procedures and equipment can vary.
Can airport security ask me to turn on my laptop?
Additional security screening may be carried out when necessary, so keeping some battery charge is sensible. Powering on every laptop is not a routine requirement for every passenger.
Does an iPad count as the one new duty-free laptop?
The specific Baggage Rules concession refers to one new laptop including a notepad computer. Do not automatically assume that a new iPad or tablet receives the same specific laptop exemption.
How many laptops can a software engineer carry?
There is no special software-engineer quota. Multiple legitimate work devices can be carried subject to customs, airline baggage, battery and security rules. Employer ownership or asset information can help explain several work computers if questioned.
When do multiple laptops look like a commercial import?
There is no automatic numerical cutoff. Several identical new or boxed laptops, quantities inconsistent with personal use or evidence of resale can make the shipment look commercial rather than bona fide passenger baggage.
Should I get an export certificate before taking my laptop out of India?
For an expensive device already owned in India, documenting its departure can help establish prior ownership when you bring it back. The 2026 rules provide for duty-free re-import of qualifying personal effects taken out earlier when the required departure declaration is made and Customs is satisfied.

If you carry an additional company laptop, and the customs guy catches you, you can ask them to write the laptop that you are planning on taking back on your passport.
This should not be a problem - of course, you are at the mercy of the customs officer, who can make up rules on the fly!

I have company label with serial id and the laptop handover document which was given by my company but I didn't take export certificate while leaving India as it is my first and short notice travel and I wasn't aware of such thing exists (not an excuse).
1. Doesn’t work laptop come under professional equipment?
5. (ii) Professional equipment upto a value of Rs. 40,000.
Professional equipment worth of RS. 40,000/- can be carried.
It also says “This concession is not available for items of common use such as Cameras, Cassette Recorders, Dictaphones, Typewriters, Personal Computers and similar items.”
2. A person who stayed in US for more than 6 months is allowed to carry duty free items worth 25k+12k as stated in the above grid?

Hello, everybody,
Iam living in Europe since 7 years (orgin is INDIA), Am am going to go to INDIA for 10 days on vacation and i was planning to drop my TV for my Parents living in India which I buyed 3 monthes ago in Europe(SONY LED 46 inches TV).
Is my TV considered as a used product while paying tax ?
or
As per the bill it costed me around 60k in rupees.
(25k is free allowance)
do i need to pay(60-25k)=35,000 rupees ? or
The goods over and above the free allowances of 25K shall be chargeable at 35% customs duty
so 60k-25k = 35k and taking 35% of it which, is 12,250 rupees ?
Please suggest me
Thanks in advance
You can get a guitar with you as a personal item, but it will have to be a part of your check-in baggage. No duties as long as you are bringing just one piece.
Hi, I am going to India after three years and I am taking my 3 yrs old laptop and 1 month old ipad2 and my two smart phoness, 1 from work(i9000 GalaxyS 1 yr old) and 1 personal(iphone 4 1 month old). Do you think i will have to pay any custom duty/levy.
I have got gift of used ipad from my son. Have I to pay custom duty on the same when I return to India? Churi
The Indian (Mumbai) custom officers are like beggars, even if you have less than 25K they will beg you for money. If you don't pay you would be in trouble. Be careful after you pay these AH's there are some more Ghatis waiting like beggers at the exit...
Hi All,
If we want to purchase any Laptop or TV or Mobile, costs nearly Rs.40,000/-. But The Customs Dept. are suppose to allow only Rs.25,000/-. Nowadays, this amount is too low right? So on behalf of one of the passenger I am requesting the Customs Department, it is better to increase the limit upto 50,000/-.
Thanks,
Venu Murala.

I had a similar problem.. wanted to get a lappy from US but lot of hassles.
someone told me about manyship (just google it) and then i got it from a person who is traveling to india. really cool. hth
So much of confusion among the travelers. i wish the customs department would have clearly pronounced the rules.
I travel to the US almost every month and most of the times while returning from the US, i buy a new laptop either for my office staff or friends.
The best way is this- If you are already carrying a laptop with you abroad for your work, declare it at customs after the immmigration and obtain an export certificate against your laptop. Retain this certificate till you return to India. Happily, buy any laptop that you want to howmuch ever it might be worth of. You will be allowed to carry this new laptop back once you show the export certificate of your existing laptop.
Cheers and happy shopping
