Can You Bring a Costco Gold Bar to India? Customs Duty and Rules

Updated: November 02, 2026

You can bring a Costco gold bar to India if you meet the applicable import conditions—but it is not duty-free. Buying it from a recognised retailer, keeping it sealed or carrying just one small bar does not create a customs exemption.

For eligible passengers, the baggage route permits up to one kilogram of gold, subject to conditions including the required stay abroad, declaration and payment of duty. Current official guidance lists a concessional duty rate of 6%, not the older figure of around 15%.

Before buying, check your eligibility as carefully as the price. A Costco receipt proves a purchase; it does not prove that you qualify to import the bar into India.

This guide concerns gold carried in passenger baggage, not postal, courier or commercial imports.

Does Buying the Gold Bar at Costco Change the Rules?

No. Indian Customs assesses the gold and the passenger’s eligibility—not the retailer’s membership programme.

Costco lists one-ounce gold bullion bars, including PAMP products. The exact weight, purity, markings and packaging depend on the product purchased.

Keep the Costco invoice, order confirmation and the bar’s identifying information. These help establish what you bought and connect the physical bar to your records.

Costco is the seller; the refinery is the manufacturer. Record both. “Bought at Costco” is less useful for identification than the refiner’s name, bar weight, purity and serial number.

Who Qualifies for the Passenger Gold Concession?

Condition 23 of Notification No. 45/2025-Customs defines an eligible passenger as a person of Indian origin or a holder of a valid Indian passport who comes to India after at least six months abroad.

Short visits to India during that period can be disregarded only where their combined duration does not exceed 30 days and the passenger did not use the relevant concession during those visits.

The conditions also require duty payment in convertible foreign currency. Confirm the accepted payment arrangements with the arrival airport before travelling.

Can a U.S. citizen bring a Costco gold bar to India?

A U.S. citizen of Indian origin may qualify if the remaining conditions are met. A U.S. passport alone does not establish eligibility. Likewise, an OCI card does not remove the stay-abroad requirement.

If you are not of Indian origin, or your stay abroad is too short, obtain clarification from Indian Customs before carrying bullion. Do not assume that willingness to pay a higher rate automatically resolves import-policy restrictions.

How Much Gold Can You Bring to India?

CBIC’s international traveller guide confirms a maximum of one kilogram per eligible passenger under the conditional passenger gold route.

This is a permitted quantity subject to compliance. It is not a free allowance.

Example quantity Approximate gold weight What to remember
One 1-troy-ounce bar 31.1035 grams Still requires the applicable declaration and duty
Two 1-troy-ounce bars 62.207 grams Count both bars in your total
One 100-gram bar 100 grams Being below 1 kg does not establish eligibility
One 1-kilogram bar 1,000 grams Reaches the limit under this route

Have Customs confirm the treatment of your complete gold inventory if you are also carrying coins or ornaments. Do not treat the limit as a separate kilogram for each type of gold.

Is Any Part of a Costco Gold Bar Duty-Free?

No passenger duty-free gold-bar allowance applies. Annexure I of the Baggage Rules, 2026 excludes gold and silver in forms other than ornaments from the general free allowance.

That means you cannot subtract the general ₹75,000 allowance from a gold bar’s value. You also cannot apply the special jewellery weight allowance to bullion.

One small bar is still bullion. A 10-gram, one-ounce or 100-gram bar does not become duty-free because it is a gift, a personal investment or your only purchase abroad.

Jewellery has different provisions. Read our India gold jewellery customs guide rather than applying jewellery allowances to a bar.

What Is the Customs Duty on a Costco Gold Bar?

Mumbai Customs’ current gold-import guidance lists:

  • 6% for eligible passengers under the specified conditions.
  • 36% for other passengers in its published rate table.

The second rate is not a universal permission to import restricted bullion. Eligibility, admissibility and the duty assessment are separate questions.

CBIC’s passenger-clearance guide identifies the concessional 6% as 5% basic customs duty plus 1% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess. It also explains that gold valuation for duty uses the notified tariff value.

Do not calculate duty from the Costco receipt alone

The applicable tariff value and customs exchange rate can differ from your purchase price and card conversion rate. Keep the invoice, but ask Customs for the assessed value and calculation.

Illustrative example: If Customs assesses the gold at ₹3,00,000 and confirms the 6% concessional rate, duty would be ₹18,000.

This is an arithmetic example—not today’s value of a one-ounce bar or a guaranteed customs bill. The arrival-date assessment controls.

The Important Detail About One-Ounce Bars

Gold uses the troy ounce, approximately 31.1035 grams, rather than the everyday ounce of approximately 28.35 grams.

There is another detail worth checking before purchase: the customs notification distinguishes bars bearing engraved refiner/manufacturer serial numbers and metric weight from other forms of gold.

A bar stamped only “1 oz” does not acquire an engraved metric weight because you printed a conversion. Do not alter the bar or its markings. Send Customs the actual product specifications if you need confirmation of its classification.

Retain the original assay card and packaging where supplied, and make sure the serial number in your records matches the item. Customs may still need to examine it.

How Do You Declare a Costco Gold Bar in India?

The 2026 baggage declaration regulations require passengers carrying dutiable or prohibited goods to declare their accompanied baggage electronically before entering the Green Channel. The declaration can be submitted up to three days before arrival.

For a gold bar requiring assessment and duty payment, report to the Red Channel or designated Customs area. Do not walk through the Green Channel hoping to explain the purchase only if stopped.

  1. Prepare your inventory: number of bars, weights, purity, refiner and serial numbers.
  2. Keep purchase evidence: Costco invoice, order confirmation and payment record.
  3. Prepare eligibility evidence: passport, travel history and relevant Indian-origin documentation.
  4. Declare accurately: identify the item as a gold bar or bullion, not jewellery.
  5. Present the bar for verification: follow the officer’s instructions.
  6. Retain the assessment and receipt: these document lawful clearance and duty paid.

If electronic filing is unavailable, ask Customs for assistance. The regulations allow an authorised officer to permit another manner of declaration on arrival; a technical problem is not a reason to omit disclosure.

Can You Carry Gold Bars on a Plane?

A gold bar is not automatically prohibited simply because it is valuable. However, airline carriage, security screening and customs import permission are separate matters.

Keep valuable bullion in a secure cabin bag under your control, subject to the airline’s rules. If that bag must be gate-checked, remove the gold and documents first. Be prepared for security staff to inspect a dense metal object.

Do not conceal a bar inside another object or misdescribe it. Secure packing should protect it from loss, not hide it from officials.

Confirm insurance specifically covers bullion in transit. Do not assume ordinary baggage cover, jewellery cover or airline liability will reimburse the full value.

If someone asks you to carry their bar, read A Friend Asked You to Carry a Package to India. Should You? before accepting responsibility.

Is Buying a Gold Bar at Costco Still Worthwhile?

Compare the total landed cost, not just Costco’s displayed price:

  • The purchase price and any applicable sales tax.
  • Foreign-exchange and payment charges.
  • Indian customs duty.
  • Insurance and secure transport costs.
  • Any testing, resale discount or conversion charges at the intended Indian buyer or jeweller.

If you intend to exchange the bar for wedding jewellery, ask the jeweller for a written explanation of the exchange valuation and making charges before purchasing abroad.

A retailer discount or card reward does not guarantee a saving after import costs. This article explains travel compliance, not whether gold is a suitable investment.

How Much Gold Can You Legally Keep in India?

Do not confuse ownership with border allowances.

The government’s clarification on gold jewellery and ornaments states that there is no prescribed holding limit where acquisition is supported by explained sources, including inheritance.

The frequently repeated 500-gram, 250-gram and 100-gram figures concern jewellery treatment during income-tax searches. They are not airport import allowances and do not authorise duty-free entry of Costco bars.

For bullion, retain purchase records, payment evidence and import-clearance documents. The ability to own gold does not remove the obligation to import it lawfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring one Costco gold bar as a gift?

Gift status does not create a bullion exemption. Explain the purpose accurately and satisfy the applicable passenger-import conditions, declaration and duty requirements.

Can I bring a bar after a two-week trip to America?

A two-week visit alone does not meet the six-month stay-abroad condition. Confirm admissibility and treatment with Customs before carrying the bar; do not assume paying 6% will be available.

Does an OCI card guarantee the concessional rate?

No. It may help establish Indian origin, but the stay-abroad and other conditions still matter.

Should I remove the bar from its sealed packaging?

There is no customs advantage in making it appear used. Retain identifying packaging and documents, while allowing any inspection Customs requires.

Can I send the bar to India instead of carrying it?

Do not apply passenger baggage rules to a courier or postal shipment. Confirm the separate import route and carrier restrictions before sending bullion.

Is a gold bar treated as cash under the U.S. $10,000 reporting rule?

CBP’s monetary-instrument guidance says gold bars and bullion are not currency or monetary instruments for that reporting definition. That does not remove other export, merchandise or Indian customs obligations.

Can I use a wedding-jewellery temporary-import certificate for bullion?

Do not assume the temporary personal-jewellery procedure applies to an investment bar. Obtain specific Customs advice for bullion rather than relying on wedding-jewellery guidance.

Before You Fly: A Short Checklist

  • Confirm eligibility before buying the bar for travel.
  • Record the exact weight, purity and markings.
  • Check the current duty and payment arrangements.
  • Carry the Costco invoice and supporting travel records.
  • Declare the bullion and complete Customs clearance.
  • Keep the duty receipt with your ownership records.
