Connecting Between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airports: How Much Time Do You Need?

For a self-transfer between Mumbai Airport (BOM) and Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), consider around six hours between domestic flights and seven to eight hours when an international flight is involved. These are cautious planning recommendations, not official minimum connection times or guarantees. How Much Time Should You Allow Between BOM and NMI Flights?

No buffer guarantees a successful connection. An extended flight delay, severe traffic disruption or heavy rain can consume several hours. Allow more time when travelling with children, older relatives, mobility assistance or substantial luggage.

Is Four or Five Hours Enough Between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai Airports?

It may work when everything runs smoothly, but it should not be advertised as a safe minimum. A four- or five-hour gap can shrink quickly once your first flight arrives late or your bags take longer to appear.

For example, a five-hour gap before an international departure gives you only two hours to leave the arrival airport and complete the road transfer if you aim to reach the departure airport three hours early. That leaves little room for baggage collection and taxi pickup, let alone a delayed flight.

Before booking, consider the consequences of missing the next flight. Saving a small amount on an earlier domestic connection may not justify the cost of replacing a long-haul ticket.

What about a two- or three-hour gap?

Do not deliberately book a two- or three-hour self-transfer between BOM and NMI. These airports are not neighbouring terminals. Even a relatively quick drive would leave very little time for everything before and after it.

What Must Your Connection Time Cover?

A useful planning formula is:

Connection gap = arrival processing + vehicle pickup + road journey + departure-airport reporting time + disruption buffer.

Do not assume you will be in a taxi 20 minutes after arrival. Equally, do not assume every international arrival can complete immigration, baggage collection and customs within one extra hour.

Domestic Flight to NMI, International Flight From BOM

This is a connection where generous planning matters. After arriving at NMI, you need to collect any checked bags, find your car, travel to the correct BOM terminal and complete international departure procedures.

Air India’s Mumbai departure guidance recommends arriving three to four hours before international flights. Follow your own airline’s instructions if they differ.

Example: noon arrival at NMI and 8 p.m. departure from BOM

The following is an illustrative plan, not a prediction of actual journey times:

• Noon: Scheduled arrival at NMI.
• 1 p.m.: Working target to have collected baggage and met the driver.
• 3 p.m.: Working arrival estimate at BOM after allowing two hours on the road.
• 5 p.m.: Airport reporting target if the airline requires arrival three hours before departure.
• 8 p.m.: Scheduled international departure.

This plan creates roughly two hours of contingency before the 5 p.m. reporting target. A two-hour inbound delay could consume that margin completely. If the airline asks you to arrive four hours early, the margin is smaller.

For a separately booked international ticket that would be expensive to replace, arriving the previous day is worth considering.

International Flight to BOM, Domestic Flight From NMI

After arriving internationally at BOM, allow time for immigration, baggage collection and customs before meeting your driver. Then travel to NMI and complete the domestic airline’s departure process.

International arrival time is not the time you will be ready to leave the airport. Queues, baggage delivery and any additional checks can change the timing substantially.

A seven- to eight-hour scheduled gap is a cautious starting point for this self-transfer. Consider a later flight or an overnight stay if you are travelling with family, expect additional formalities or cannot afford to miss the onward service.

Check-in Closing Time Is Not Your Airport Arrival Target

There are separate deadlines for check-in, bag drop and boarding. Reaching the terminal before takeoff does not mean you can still board.

For example, IndiGo’s published requirements state that check-in counters close 60 minutes before domestic departures and 75 minutes before international departures. Passengers must also meet the specified boarding-gate deadline.

These are closure times, not recommended times to arrive outside the building. Your journey through terminal entry, queues and security must fit before the relevant deadlines.

Does online check-in make a short connection safe?

No. Online check-in may save one step, but it does not move your luggage between airports or remove security, document checks and gate deadlines. If you have checked bags, you must still meet the bag-drop cutoff.

Use a Taxi or Car for a Flight Connection

DO NOT EXPECT TO CATCH AN AUTO-RICKSHAW FOR A BOM–NMI AIRPORT TRANSFER. Arrange a taxi or car for the complete journey, with sufficient luggage space and the exact departure terminal entered as the destination.

NMIA’s official transport page lists taxi services and Uber Auto for local connections. A local auto pickup service should not be interpreted as a dependable through service to BOM.

Why we do not recommend local trains for this connection

Local rail is not a direct terminal-to-terminal transfer. You may need road transport at both ends and train changes between suitable services. Not every Harbour Line train serves the station you need.

Platform changes may involve stairs and footbridges. Do not assume working lifts or escalators will be available throughout the journey. Crowded trains, carrying suitcases and keeping valuables secure add further difficulty.

For an airport connection with a deadline, use a direct car. Do not build your itinerary around a future metro link or an unconfirmed shuttle service.

Before meeting the driver

• Confirm BOM or NMI and the correct terminal.
• Share the flight number and agree how arrival delays will be handled.
• Check pickup instructions, waiting charges and luggage capacity.
• Keep the driver’s contact details and booking confirmation accessible.

Separate Tickets, Connection Protection and Checked Bags

Are both flights protected if they appear in one booking?

Do not assume that one booking reference includes a protected road transfer. Ask the airline or booking agent to confirm who arranges transport, who pays for it and what happens if an inbound delay causes you to miss the onward flight.

For separate tickets, plan on managing the connection yourself unless written terms explicitly provide protection. Do not assume the second airline will rebook you without charge because another carrier arrived late.

Will your bags move automatically between airports?

Plan to collect and transport your own luggage unless the airline explicitly confirms another arrangement. Ask specifically about the change between BOM and NMI, rather than simply asking whether the bags are “checked through.”

Keep medicines, documents, chargers and other essentials in your cabin bag in case the onward flight needs to be changed.

Do international passengers need permission to enter India?

Yes, a road transfer requires passing through immigration and entering India. The permission needed depends on your nationality and immigration status. Do not assume that an airside transit exemption covers travel between airports.

When Is an Overnight Connection the Better Choice?

Consider staying overnight when:

• Your onward international flight is on a separate, expensive ticket.
• A missed connection would disrupt a cruise, wedding, tour or important appointment.
• You are travelling with children, older relatives or someone needing assistance.
• The onward flight is the last suitable service of the day.
• Heavy rain or other disruption could make the road journey unpredictable.
• You would otherwise spend the transfer worrying about a narrow margin.

Choose accommodation with the next departure airport in mind. A hotel advertised as “near Mumbai Airport” may be near BOM, even when your next flight departs from NMI.

Where practical, complete the inter-airport journey before your overnight rest. Confirm late check-in and the following day’s airport transport directly with the hotel.

What Should You Do if Your First Flight Is Delayed?

1. Recalculate immediately. Compare your expected arrival at the next airport with its reporting and check-in deadlines.
2. Contact the onward airline before becoming a no-show. Ask about changing the flight and protecting any remaining sectors.
3. Contact the booking agent if it arranged a protected connection. Request instructions in writing.
4. Update your driver. Confirm the revised pickup and any waiting charges.
5. Keep evidence. Save delay notifications, booking records and relevant receipts.

Do not ask a driver to compensate for a late flight by speeding. Once the timing becomes unrealistic, focus on rebooking rather than trying to recover every minute on the road.

Downgraded on an India Flight? Refund Rights

You paid for business class or premium economy, but the airline sends a message: “Due to operational reasons, the cabin for your booking has been downgraded.” Can it move you to economy and keep everything you paid?

An involuntary cabin downgrade can entitle you to money back. However, the calculation depends on your flight, the applicable passenger-rights rules and whether you travel in the lower cabin or decline the changed journey. Indian domestic flights, U.S.–India journeys and flights departing Europe do not all follow the same refund formula.

Quick answer: Under India’s DGCA downgrade framework, reimbursement is 75% of the ticket cost including taxes for a domestic sector, and 30%, 50% or 75% for an international sector depending on distance. Foreign-carrier provisions and other countries’ rules can affect international claims. Before accepting an offer, ask the airline to identify the applicable rule and explain its calculation.

What Counts as an Involuntary Cabin Downgrade?

A cabin downgrade occurs when the airline carries you in a lower travel class than the one you purchased. Examples include business class to premium economy, business class to economy, or premium economy to economy.

Moving from a window seat to a middle seat within economy is normally a seat reassignment, rather than a cabin downgrade. Losing a paid extra-legroom seat may support a separate seat-fee refund claim.

Likewise, an older aircraft, different meal or broken entertainment screen does not automatically qualify for the cabin-downgrade percentage. Record those problems and request an appropriate service adjustment separately.

How Much Is the Downgrade Refund in India?

DGCA’s reimbursement schedule for passengers carried involuntarily in a lower class is set out below. Air India also publishes these percentages in its conditions of carriage, section 6.4.

Example: If an eligible domestic ticket costs ₹20,000 including taxes, a 75% reimbursement is ₹15,000. This is a percentage of the relevant ticket cost, rather than simply the difference between two advertised fares.

For a return or connecting booking, ask for the value assigned to the affected sector. Do not automatically multiply the price of your entire itinerary by 75% when only one flight was downgraded.

Do these percentages apply to every foreign airline?

DGCA’s Civil Aviation Requirements, section 3, series M, part IV include foreign carriers operating to or from India. However, paragraph 3.6 permits compensation under their country-of-origin regulations or the specified DGCA provisions. An India destination alone does not establish one universal percentage for every airline.

Can Airlines Avoid Paying by Saying “Operational Reasons”?

That explanation alone does not settle your refund claim. An aircraft substitution or unusable premium seat may explain why the airline changed your cabin. Ask separately how it will reimburse the service you purchased but did not receive.

DGCA’s downgrade provision does not make reimbursement depend on proving that the airline deliberately caused the problem. The CAR’s extraordinary-circumstances exceptions address cancellation and delay compensation; they should not simply be treated as a blanket answer to a downgrade claim.

Ask the airline to record:

• The cabin originally purchased and the cabin provided.
• That the change was initiated by the airline.
• The affected flight number, date and sector.
• The reason for the change and the proposed refund calculation.

If you must travel, ask the agent to note that you are accepting transportation in the lower cabin while requesting the applicable downgrade reimbursement. Read any settlement or voucher terms before agreeing.

Can You Refuse the Downgrade and Get a Full Refund?

Request an involuntary refund before cancelling the booking yourself. Tell the airline that the lower cabin is unacceptable and ask about rebooking in your purchased cabin or refunding the unused journey.

India’s percentage schedule addresses passengers who actually travel in the lower class. It should not be described as a universal “100% refund plus a free flight” rule.

For refusal to travel, check the applicable law and the airline’s involuntary-refund conditions. For example, Air India’s conditions of carriage, article 11.3 address situations where it cannot provide previously confirmed space. They distinguish a wholly unused ticket from one that has already been partly used.

Before departure: Obtain written confirmation of the refund and what happens to your onward or return flights. Simply not showing up can create a separate no-show problem. Avoid using a voluntary cancellation button unless the airline confirms that the involuntary refund treatment will be preserved.

Which Rules Apply to International Flights to India?

Flights between the United States and India

For covered U.S. journeys, an involuntary move to a lower cabin can qualify as a significant change. If you decline the changed travel and do not accept replacement transportation or a voucher, a refund is due for the unused transportation. If you fly in the lower cabin, the U.S. Department of Transportation says the airline must refund the fare difference.

This applies to covered flights involving the United States, including foreign airlines—not just U.S. carriers. See the DOT refund guidance.

For qualifying refunds under the U.S. automatic-refund rules, the deadline is generally seven business days for credit-card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods, measured from the applicable refund trigger. These are not necessarily the dates the funds appear on your statement. The timing definition is in 14 CFR 260.2.

Flights departing the European Union for India

EU passenger-rights rules generally cover departures from the EU on any airline. A direct EU-to-India flight over 3,500 km falls within the 75% downgrade reimbursement category when those rules apply. Shorter covered flights use the relevant 30% or 50% category.

Reimbursement concerns the downgraded flight, rather than automatically the whole connecting itinerary, and should be paid within seven days. Flights departing the United Kingdom for India

UK rules cover departures from the UK on any airline. The UK Civil Aviation Authority lists downgrade reimbursement of 30%, 50% or 75% by distance. A direct UK-to-India flight exceeds 3,500 km, placing it in the 75% category.

For travel from India to the UK, carrier eligibility matters: the CAA lists UK and EU airlines for arrivals into the UK. Do not assume the same protection applies to every return flight.

Calculation warning: Do not copy India’s “including taxes” wording into every European claim. Ask for an itemised fare-and-tax calculation under the applicable regime. UK CAA guidance distinguishes taxes that vary with cabin class from taxes that do not.

Flights from Dubai, Doha, Singapore or elsewhere

Identify the operating airline, departure country and applicable conditions before assuming a refund percentage. An Indian airline’s international downgrade rules and a foreign airline’s obligations may differ.

If more than one legal framework could apply, ask the airline to explain how it has assessed them. Do not assume you can add multiple percentage refunds together for the same downgrade.

How Do You Claim From Air India, Delta or American Airlines?

Air India

Air India’s payment and refund FAQ directs passengers with downgraded bookings to customer support under New Refund Request. Attach your original confirmation, replacement boarding pass and downgrade notification.

If a travel agent or booking website issued the ticket, involve that seller in the refund process. Ask Air India to confirm the downgrade and calculation so the seller has the necessary information.

Delta Air Lines

Delta’s cancellation and refund page lists a fare difference for a seat downgrade among reasons to use its Travel Resolution Form.

Describe whether Delta moved you to a lower cabin or you voluntarily requested a cheaper ticket. For a connecting India itinerary, identify the actual operating airline on the affected flight.

American Airlines

American’s conditions of carriage state that passengers who travel after a cabin downgrade receive the difference between the original fare and the fare for the cabin flown on the affected segment.

Its refund provisions also address passengers who decline qualifying airline-initiated changes. A voluntary request to move into a cheaper cabin is a different situation and follows the ticket’s change and refund conditions.

How to Request a Downgrade Refund

1. Save the original booking. Keep the ticket number, payment receipt, cabin description and itinerary.
2. Save proof of the change. Keep emails, app notifications, boarding passes and written airport confirmations.
3. Choose your preferred outcome. Request rebooking in the purchased cabin, travel with downgrade reimbursement, or an involuntary refund if you decline travel.
4. Ask for an itemised calculation. Request the affected sector’s value, applicable percentage or fare difference, tax treatment and any separately paid upgrade adjustment.
5. Submit the claim in writing. Obtain a case number and retain every response.
6. Challenge an unexplained amount. Ask which rule or contract term supports it instead of accepting a payment labelled only “goodwill”.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a refund even if my ticket was non-refundable?

A non-refundable fare does not automatically remove rights arising from an airline-imposed cabin downgrade. Make clear that your request concerns an involuntary change, rather than a change of travel plans.

Does accepting the economy seat mean I lose my claim?

Travelling in the lower cabin is precisely the situation addressed by downgrade reimbursement rules. However, a separate settlement or voucher agreement may affect your claim. Keep a copy and read its terms.

What is the DGCA rule for a full refund?

There is no single full-refund rule covering every disruption. Cancellation, qualifying delay and downgrade provisions address different situations. For a downgrade, distinguish reimbursement after flying from an involuntary refund when you decline the changed journey.

Can I get a 100% refund if the flight is cancelled?

An airline cancellation can create a refund entitlement if you do not accept replacement travel. Cancelling the ticket yourself follows different rules. If part of your journey has already been flown, do not assume the entire original ticket will be refunded.

Can I voluntarily downgrade my airline ticket?

You can ask, but the airline may restrict changes or provide only a credit after any applicable charges. Obtain a quote before agreeing. Involuntary-downgrade percentages do not automatically apply when you choose the cheaper cabin.

Can I get money back if the ticket price falls?

A lower advertised price is not a cabin downgrade. Any adjustment depends on your fare conditions and the airline’s repricing policy. Check the net saving after change charges and whether the difference would be cash, credit or unavailable.

What about tickets bought with miles or a paid upgrade?

Include the mileage statement or upgrade receipt in your claim. Ask how the airline will restore miles, upgrade instruments or cash payments, and whether statutory reimbursement also applies. Do not assume an award ticket can be valued at today’s advertised cash fare.

Will I keep my original baggage allowance after a downgrade?

Ask the airline to confirm this before check-in. Also confirm lounge access and other purchased benefits. If staff charge you because the booking was changed, keep the receipt and request a review.

Am I entitled to additional compensation for inconvenience?

Power Banks, Spare Batteries and Electronics

Power banks and loose batteries

Power banks are treated as spare batteries and must not go into checked luggage. Carry permitted spares in the cabin, individually protected from short circuits. Use a battery case, original packaging or protected terminals so they cannot contact keys or coins.

Check the battery’s watt-hour rating and the airline’s quantity limits. Do not assume that a larger battery becomes acceptable simply because you put it in your hand baggage. See IATA’s lithium battery safety guidance and our power bank rules for India flights.

Laptops, cameras and devices with installed batteries

A battery installed inside a device is not treated identically to a loose spare. Where the airline permits a device in checked baggage, it must be protected against damage and accidental activation and fully switched off, not left sleeping or hibernating.

Keep valuable electronics in your cabin bag where possible. Consult the IATA passenger dangerous-goods table and the airline’s device restrictions.

Smart suitcases

If checking a smart bag with a removable lithium battery, remove the battery and carry it in the cabin. Non-removable batteries can make a bag unacceptable, depending on their specification. See our smart luggage guide.

Fuels, Chemicals, Lighters and Vapes

IndiGo’s baggage policy prohibits categories including flammable fuels and solvents, oxidising substances, toxic chemicals and compressed gases. Familiar household uses do not make these products safe for flight. Check labels before packing cleaning supplies, workshop products or camping equipment.

Lighters and matches

Do not pack lighters or matches in checked luggage. International guidance about carrying a small lighter on your person is not permission for every India itinerary. Air India lists lighters as prohibited. See our India guide to lighters and matches.

Camphor and dried coconut

Air India lists camphor and copra, including crushed dried coconut, as prohibited. Do not assume an item is acceptable because it is intended for cooking or a religious ceremony. Fresh coconut is a different entry in its policy.

E-cigarettes and vapes

Do not follow overseas advice that simply says “put your vape in cabin baggage.” IndiGo’s conditions prohibit e-cigarette transport and allow refusal of passengers or baggage containing them. See the official conditions of carriage and our India flight vape guide.

Can You Pack Perfume, Deodorant and Shampoo?

Toiletries are not all banned from checked baggage. The cabin-security 100 ml container rule is not a universal checked-bag liquid limit.

For eligible medicinal and toiletry articles, including permitted aerosols, IATA specifies a combined maximum of 2 kg or 2 litres per person, with each article limited to 0.5 kg or 0.5 litre. Aerosol valves need protection against accidental release. Airlines may impose stricter conditions.

This exception does not make spray paint, fuel sprays or every household aerosol acceptable. Check the product category, not just the can’s size. Source: IATA passenger dangerous-goods provisions.

Can Alcohol Go in Checked Baggage?

Air India permits up to 5 litres per person of alcoholic beverages in the specified 24%–70% alcohol range, in original retail packaging and containers no larger than 5 litres. Stronger alcohol is not covered by this allowance.

Check the exact strength, airline conditions and route before packing. A baggage allowance is separate from international duty-free allowances and state alcohol restrictions. Paying customs duty does not make an aviation-prohibited product acceptable.

Are Knives, Scissors and Tools Banned from Checked Bags?

No blanket ban applies to every sharp object. Air India lists scissors, box cutters and certain knives as permitted in checked baggage, with sharp edges securely wrapped or sheathed.

Weapons, specialised tools and powered equipment need separate checks. A tool body, its battery and any fuel can have different carriage rules. Read our power tools guide before packing workshop equipment.

Do not treat firearms or ammunition as ordinary tools. Where carriage is permitted, licensing, airline approval, declaration and special packing requirements apply. IATA describes this as a controlled exception in its passenger dangerous-goods guidance.

Are Food, Spices, Fruits and Plants Banned?

Food is not one single prohibited category. Check the individual product and route instead of treating all homemade food, fresh produce or powders as dangerous goods.

• Domestic travel: Airline restrictions, odour, packaging and leakage matter.
• International travel: Food and agricultural products may also face destination import, declaration or quarantine requirements.
• Dangerous products: An item classified as dangerous goods does not become acceptable because it is edible or factory-sealed.

Medical Equipment and Items Requiring Approval

Medical oxygen, battery-powered mobility aids and temperature-controlled medical shipments require specific arrangements. A general dangerous-goods allowance does not mean every airline accepts every configuration.

Contact the operating airline before travel with the equipment model, battery details and medical requirements. Do not put an oxygen cylinder or a large mobility-aid battery into an ordinary suitcase and assume it will be accepted.

Medicines, Jewellery, Cash and Documents

These items should not be grouped with explosives or fuels. The reasons to keep them with you include access during travel, loss risk and airline conditions concerning valuables.

IndiGo advises carrying medication, money, jewellery, electronics and other precious or fragile belongings in cabin baggage. Its dangerous-goods page also states that it does not transport valuables in checked luggage. See the official guidance.

Keep essential medicines, identification, travel documents and necessary prescriptions accessible. Check medicine-specific legal and storage requirements separately.

What Happens If Security Finds a Prohibited Item?

Your bag may require further inspection, and the item may be removed or refused carriage. IndiGo warns that removed prohibited items may not be returned. Its conditions also allow baggage searches in a passenger’s absence when the passenger is unavailable.

If you realise you checked a prohibited battery or other restricted item, tell airline staff immediately. Do not wait until arrival.

• Follow instructions and respond promptly if staff call you for baggage screening.
• Ask what options are available for the particular item.
• Request documentation if an item is retained, where available.
• Do not assume that everything refused in checked baggage can move into the cabin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are power banks allowed in checked baggage?

No. Carry eligible power banks in cabin baggage within airline limits. Remove them before a cabin bag is checked at the gate.

Can I pack a laptop in checked luggage?

It may be permitted subject to the airline’s device and battery rules, but cabin baggage is preferable for valuable electronics. Where checking is allowed, switch the device off completely and protect it against damage and activation.

Can I put a 200 ml shampoo bottle in checked baggage?

The cabin 100 ml rule does not by itself prohibit it. Check that the product is an acceptable toiletry, observe applicable quantity limits and pack it against leaks.

Are all aerosol cans banned?

No. Eligible personal-care aerosols have limited exceptions. Fuel sprays, paint sprays and other hazardous aerosols should not be treated as toiletries.

Are scissors prohibited in checked luggage?

Not automatically. Check the airline’s item list and securely cover sharp edges. Cabin restrictions are different.

Can I carry a vape if I remove its battery?

Do not assume that removing the battery resolves India’s e-cigarette restrictions. Leave the device out of your luggage.

Does factory-sealed packaging make food legal to bring into India?

No. Packaging can help identification and prevent leaks, but it does not override import restrictions, permits or declaration requirements.

Where should I check an unusual item?

Do Airlines in India Provide Bassinets for Infants?

Aircraft configuration matters more than a broad label. Do not assume every international flight has bassinets, every domestic flight lacks them, or every bulkhead row has mounting positions.

Can You Request a Baby Bassinet on Air India?

Yes. Air India says passengers can request a complimentary bassinet during booking, at airport check-in or through its customer support portal. Availability is limited, so request it early rather than waiting until boarding.

Its family travel page specifically highlights bassinets on long-haul journeys. For a domestic flight, ask about the actual aircraft and cabin instead of assuming the general service applies.

The reviewed FAQ does not provide a universal numerical bassinet weight or length limit. Ask Air India to confirm the limits for your flight; do not apply another airline’s specifications.

Does IndiGo Provide Bassinets on International Flights?

There is an important exception to IndiGo’s general no-bassinet guidance. Its Norse-specific FAQ lists three bassinets: one in Stretch and two in Economy. It states that they are free, require an advance request and are intended for infants under two years weighing up to 12 kg.

Contact IndiGo early to confirm that your flight uses this service and to clarify the request deadline. The same FAQ prohibits passengers from bringing personal bassinets or baby beds onboard.

Do not extend these provisions to all IndiGo flights. Use the Norse-operated flight FAQ for the specific service and reconfirm if the aircraft changes.

What Are the Age, Weight and Size Limits?

Being under two years old does not automatically make a baby suitable for a bassinet. “Infant” is a ticket category; bassinet eligibility is an equipment and safety assessment.

Ask the airline about:

• Maximum permitted weight
• Usable length and width
• Any age or developmental restrictions
• Whether the baby must fit with legs comfortably extended
• The crew’s final assessment onboard

For example, Emirates specifies up to 11 kg and requires a safe fit; it may refuse use if the baby must bend their legs to fit. Its limit is not an Air India limit. See Emirates’ bassinet conditions.

How to Request a Bassinet on a Plane

1. Check before booking: Give the airline your proposed flight number, date and cabin.
2. Add your infant: Make sure the baby is included in the reservation.
3. Provide travel-date details: Give the baby’s date of birth and expected weight and length.
4. Request the bassinet explicitly: Buying an infant ticket or a front-row seat is not the same thing.
5. Clarify the seat: Ask whether a compatible position is assigned, requested or still pending.
6. Save the response: Keep the request reference and any written confirmation.
7. Recheck each flight: Include connecting and return sectors, especially after schedule or aircraft changes.
8. Confirm at check-in: Then follow the cabin crew’s instructions onboard.

Message you can send: “I am travelling with an infant on flight [number] on [date], booking reference [PNR]. My baby will be [age], approximately [weight] kg and [length] cm. Does this aircraft and cabin offer a bassinet? Please confirm eligibility, request status, the compatible seat and any associated charges.”

Request early, but do not assume every airline allocates bassinets strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. Ask how allocation works for your flight.

Are Baby Bassinets Free? Do Infants Fly Free?

A free bassinet does not mean a free infant ticket. Air India and the Norse-specific IndiGo service describe the bassinet itself as complimentary, subject to availability.

Check the full booking price separately, including the infant fare, applicable taxes and any seat-selection charges. Do not assume the accompanying adult’s seat is free simply because the bassinet is.

IndiGo’s special-assistance policy specifies a fee per sector for lap infants. Akasa Air also lists a per-sector infant fee in its infant policy.

If the child turns two during the trip, contact the airline before booking to confirm how the return journey must be ticketed.

Is a Bassinet a Safety Seat?

No. A bassinet is not a substitute for an approved child restraint. It cannot be relied on for the entire journey. Follow crew instructions about removing and securing your baby during takeoff, landing, turbulence and other restricted periods.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exploring a separate seat with an appropriate approved restraint for safer air travel. However, airline acceptance differs: IndiGo’s standard infant policy and Akasa Air’s policy require lap travel and do not permit booking an infant’s own seat. Confirm the operating carrier’s rules before buying or bringing a restraint.

Prepare for the Flight Even If You Request a Bassinet

Plan for periods when the bassinet is unavailable. Keep nappies, wipes, spare clothing and feeding supplies accessible, including enough for delays.

Check feeding, nappy and comfort needs. Feeding or a pacifier may help with ear-pressure discomfort when safe and consistent with crew instructions. Ask the crew for assistance if needed. Do not give medicine simply to make a baby sleep without medical advice.

What is the safest age for a baby to fly?

An airline’s minimum accepted age is not a medical recommendation. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises waiting until around two to three months when possible. Discuss travel with your paediatrician, particularly for a premature baby or one with heart, lung or other health concerns.

Does Visitor Insurance Pay for Medicines in the USA?

Visitor insurance can pay for prescription medicines in the USA when they treat an illness or injury covered by your policy. Payment is subject to exclusions, deductibles, benefit limits and other conditions. Having a prescription does not automatically make the medicine an eligible insurance expense.

For visitors from India, two separate questions matter: can a U.S. pharmacy dispense the medicine, and will your insurance pay for it? A valid local prescription may solve the first issue without solving the second.

Quick answer: Medicine prescribed for a covered new illness may qualify for reimbursement. Regular refills for an existing condition, replacement of forgotten tablets and over-the-counter purchases should not be assumed covered. Be prepared to pay at the pharmacy unless your insurer confirms a direct-payment arrangement.

When Does Visitor Insurance Cover Prescription Medicines?

The starting point is whether the underlying illness or injury is covered. Insurers may also require the medicine to be medically necessary, prescribed by an eligible clinician and purchased within the applicable coverage period.

Comprehensive and Fixed-Benefit Plans: What Is the Difference?

A large overall medical maximum does not necessarily mean the same amount is available for outpatient medicines.

Will Insurance Pay for Diabetes, Blood Pressure or Other Regular Medicines?

Do not buy visitor insurance assuming it will fund regular prescriptions throughout a long U.S. visit. Check whether the plan covers ongoing treatment of pre-existing conditions, rather than only a narrowly defined unexpected episode.

Getting a new prescription from a U.S. clinician does not make an existing condition new. Similarly, running out of tablets does not by itself establish an insured medical emergency.

If you are running out of essential medicine: Contact a clinician or pharmacist promptly. Do not stop treatment, change the dose or substitute a different product simply because an insurance claim is uncertain.

Can a Tourist Get a Prescription in the USA?

Yes. A tourist can seek an assessment from a clinician authorised to practise and prescribe in the relevant U.S. state. Depending on the problem, an appointment may be available through a clinic, urgent-care centre or an appropriate telehealth service.

A prescription depends on the clinician’s assessment; an appointment does not guarantee that your requested medicine will be prescribed. Telehealth availability and prescribing restrictions also vary.

Bring your existing prescription, medicine packaging, dosage details, allergies and relevant medical records. Ask your insurer whether the consultation is eligible and whether it recommends a particular provider. Some visitor plans include access to telehealth, as described on IMG’s visitor insurance information page.

Do U.S. Pharmacies Accept Indian or Other Foreign Prescriptions?

Visitors from India should plan to obtain a prescription valid under local U.S. rules rather than assume an Indian prescription can be filled directly. Carry the Indian prescription as useful medical documentation.

There is no accurate blanket statement that every foreign prescription is rejected everywhere. State rules matter. For example, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy says foreign prescriptions generally cannot be filled, but allows certain written prescriptions for non-controlled medicines from Canadian or Mexican doctors. That exception does not establish acceptance of Indian prescriptions.

Does CVS fill international prescriptions?

Do not assume a CVS location can fill an Indian prescription. Ask the local pharmacist whether it meets the applicable legal and dispensing requirements. CVS explains that pharmacists may need to verify prescriptions with the prescriber; this is not a promise to accept overseas prescriptions. See CVS prescription verification guidance.

Does Walgreens fill international prescriptions?

Contact the specific Walgreens pharmacy before relying on an overseas prescription. Acceptance depends on applicable law and pharmacy requirements. For travel planning, arrange access to a locally authorised clinician if you may need a refill.

Do You Have to Pay for Medicines Yourself First?

Be prepared to pay upfront and submit a claim. However, do not treat “all visitor insurance is reimbursement-only at every pharmacy” as a universal rule. Ask your insurer how your particular prescription benefit works.

A hospital or clinic accepting your insurance does not establish that a retail pharmacy can bill the same plan. Likewise, a pharmacy discount card may reduce the price without paying an insurance benefit.

Before collecting the medicine, ask:

• Does this policy provide a pharmacy billing benefit or require reimbursement?
• Is there a separate prescription limit or deductible?
• Does the benefit cover this condition and medicine?
• Is there a limit on the quantity or days supplied?
• What documents and claim deadline apply?

How to Claim Prescription Medicine Expenses

1. Keep the prescription details: Retain the medicine name, strength, quantity and prescriber information.
2. Request an itemised pharmacy receipt: A card-payment slip alone may not identify the medicine or patient.
3. Save the consultation records: The insurer may need evidence of the condition being treated.
4. Submit the required claim form: Use the insurer’s portal or stated claims process.
5. Meet the deadline: Follow your certificate’s filing requirements.
6. Keep copies: Retain the documents and submission confirmation.

Why might a covered prescription receive no reimbursement?

A deductible can absorb the eligible expense. For illustration, if a hypothetical policy applies an unmet $250 deductible to an eligible $80 pharmacy bill, the insurer may pay nothing for that bill. The expense may instead count toward the deductible, according to the policy.

What Happens If a Tourist Gets Sick in the USA?

Tourists can receive medical treatment, but access to treatment and insurance payment are separate matters. For a non-emergency, contact your insurer’s assistance service to locate appropriate care and understand billing arrangements.

For a medical emergency, call 911 or seek emergency care without waiting for insurance approval. Under EMTALA, qualifying hospital emergency departments must provide an appropriate emergency screening and stabilising treatment or an appropriate transfer regardless of insurance, ability to pay or U.S. citizenship. This does not make the care free.

How to Get Proof of Prescription Before Travelling

Ask your prescribing clinician for a current prescription copy and, where appropriate, a travel letter identifying your medicines and treatment needs. Include generic names, strengths and dosing instructions so a clinician abroad can identify the products.

Keep medicines in original labelled packaging and carry the documents with them. CDC recommends carrying medicines in hand baggage and bringing prescription copies; controlled or injectable medicines may need additional documentation. See CDC guidance on travelling with medicine.

Which medicines are not allowed overseas?

There is no single worldwide banned-medicine list. Rules depend on the drug, destination, transit country and quantity. Controlled medicines and products legal in one country may face restrictions elsewhere.

Check the destination and transit authorities before departure. A doctor’s letter does not override an import restriction. For entering the USA with personal medicines, consult the FDA’s personal importation guidance.
