You open your flight confirmation and notice it: a missing letter, your surname in the wrong place, or your married name on a ticket when your passport still shows your maiden name.
A name discrepancy does not always mean you need a new ticket—but do not assume a small mistake will be ignored. The first step is to establish whether you are looking at normal airline formatting, a correctable error or a booking issued for the wrong person.
This guide explains what to check, who to contact and why waiting until airport security is the wrong time to find out.
Airline policies reviewed: November 2026. Correction eligibility depends on the airline, booking channel, itinerary and time remaining before departure.

Is a Misspelled Name on a Flight Ticket a Problem?
It can be. A correction that is straightforward several days before travel may become difficult shortly before departure, particularly when a travel agency or another airline is involved.
Start by comparing the booking with the document you will use for travel. For an international journey, keep your passport open while checking the details.
| What you notice | What it might mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| First and middle names joined together | Normal ticket-display formatting | Check that all letters and underlying name fields are correct. |
| Surname printed before the first name | Normal surname-first display | Distinguish the printed order from incorrectly completed booking fields. |
| A missing or incorrect letter | A genuine spelling error | Request a correction promptly. |
| First name entered as surname, and vice versa | Incorrect name fields | Ask the airline or issuing agent to review and correct them. |
| Missing middle name or expanded initial | Airline, route or passenger-data requirement | Check the policy for the complete itinerary. |
| Married surname on ticket, maiden surname on passport | A document mismatch | Request advice and correction using supporting documents. |
| Another person’s name | A potential passenger substitution | Do not assume the ticket can be transferred. |
“Only one letter is wrong” is not a boarding guarantee. A policy permitting a spelling correction means you can request that correction; it does not mean you should leave the error unresolved.
First Name, Last Name and Surname: What Goes Where?
Last name, surname and family name generally refer to the same booking field. “Given names” refers to the names recorded in that section of your passport, which may include more than one name.
Follow the actual document fields rather than guessing from the order in which you normally write your name. For example, if the passport records “Priya Anjali” under given names and “Sharma” under surname, use those details according to the airline’s booking instructions.
Why does my ticket show the surname first?
A display such as SHARMA/PRIYAANJALI can be normal. Emirates explains that names may be joined together on tickets even when entered separately during booking.
The question is whether the booking contains the correct names in the correct fields—not whether the printed ticket looks exactly like the passport page.
What if I actually reversed the booking fields?
That is different from a surname-first display. Do not assume every airline will recognise and overlook it. Request a review and explain precisely which field contains which name.

What If Your Passport Has No Surname?
A blank surname field creates a booking-format issue that should be resolved before payment. Airlines and destinations can have different instructions for passengers whose names appear entirely under “Given Names.”
- Do not invent a surname to satisfy a booking form.
- Do not automatically repeat your name in both fields.
- Do not enter FNU or LNU simply because someone used it successfully on another airline.
- Ask for the correct format for your passport, destination and every operating carrier.
If an online form cannot accommodate the approved format, ask the airline or agent to make the booking. Retain the instructions with your confirmation.
Air India publishes specific formats and destination exceptions in its passenger-name guidance. Those instructions should not be treated as universal rules for other airlines.
Do Middle Names, Initials and Nicknames Matter?
There is no reliable rule that middle names never matter. The printed ticket and the passenger information transmitted for travel checks are also not necessarily identical.
American Airlines explains that its Secure Flight passenger-data field can contain a middle name without changing the displayed reservation name. Its instructions require those passenger details to match the identification used for travel.

What about initials commonly used in Indian names?
If your passport spells out a name but the ticket contains only an initial, ask whether the booking needs correction. Do not expand an initial yourself using a spelling that differs from the travel document.
Can I use a nickname?
Use the name on your travel document when booking. A familiar nickname may be understandable to a person but still require an airline correction. “Everyone knows me by this name” does not establish that the reservation meets the carrier’s requirements.
Can I ignore a missing middle name on an Air India ticket?
Air India’s published guidance makes middle names mandatory for travel to or from the United States and Canada when they appear on the passport. It also requires complete names in the document details supplied to the airline.
Married Name on the Ticket, Maiden Name on the Passport
For international travel, book using the passport you will actually present. A new surname on a bank account, social-media profile or frequent-flyer account can accidentally populate a booking while your passport still uses your previous name.
A marriage certificate or court order can support a correction request. It should not be treated as an automatic substitute for correcting a mismatched ticket.
British Airways explicitly advises that ticket and passport details must match when travelling after marriage. See its maiden-name travel guidance.
If your passport will be renewed before departure, discuss the expected name change with the airline before booking or updating the ticket. Also check the associated visa or other entry documentation.
Our travelling with a maiden-name passport after marriage guide explains the wider document issues.
How to Fix a Wrong Name on Your Flight Ticket
- Compare the documents. Identify the exact difference between the booking and the ID or passport you will use.
- Check when you booked. Some free-correction windows run from the booking time, while other deadlines run backward from departure.
- Contact the ticket issuer. Start with the airline for a direct booking or the travel agency that issued the ticket.
- Describe it accurately. Say “name correction for the same passenger” when that is what you need.
- Provide evidence through an official channel. Have your booking reference, ticket number and relevant identity document ready.
- Ask about every flight. Include connecting, return and partner-operated segments.
- Confirm the cost and process. Ask whether correction, reissue, an agency service fee or a new booking is required.
- Check the completed result. Obtain the updated itinerary or ticket and verify the passenger details again.
Message you can send:
“My booking reference is [PNR]. The ticket shows [incorrect name], but my travel document shows [correct name]. This is the same passenger. Please confirm the correction procedure, any charges, the deadline and whether all connecting and return flights will be updated.”
A support case number is useful, but it is not the same as a completed correction. Ask whether any further action remains before travel.
Can I correct the name online?
Sometimes. The available route might be an online support request, chatbot or customer-service team rather than an editable field in Manage Booking.
Changing your account profile does not necessarily change an existing ticket. Confirm that the reservation itself has been updated.
What Do Airline Name-Correction Policies Say?
These are selected published policies, not a promise that every request will qualify.
| Airline | Published correction provision | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Air India | Lists genuine typing errors up to three characters, title corrections and reversed first/surname fields as non-chargeable categories. | Its passenger page excludes corrections within 24 hours of departure and restricts partner-operated itineraries. Other correction categories may be chargeable. |
| IndiGo | Its Conditions of Carriage provide free spelling correction within 24 hours of booking for tickets booked directly through its website or app, through customer care. | It does not permit ordinary passenger-name changes, and its codeshare provisions are restrictive. |
| Air India Express | Its terms provide no additional charge for correcting the same person’s name when reported within 24 hours of booking. | Replacing the passenger with another person is not permitted. |
| Emirates | Its booking FAQ states that direct bookings containing only Emirates-operated flights can receive spelling corrections without a fee. | Partner flights and agent bookings need separate checks. Direct-booking requests must be made at least two hours before departure. |
| AirAsia | Its support page provides spelling-correction requests through AskBo with supporting identification, without a spelling-correction fee under that process. | Agent bookings go through the agent; legal name changes need further validation. This does not cover other airlines sold through AirAsia MOVE. |
Official policies: Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, Emirates and AirAsia.
Do not aim for the deadline. Agent processing, weekends, supporting-document checks and partner-airline approval can reduce the time available. Request the correction as soon as you notice the error.
Will Indian Airport Security Let You Through With a Misspelled Name?
Do not rely on security staff overlooking the mismatch. Airport entry, airline check-in and boarding involve separate checks. International travel adds immigration and destination-document requirements.
A successful online check-in does not resolve a name error. Nor does passing one checkpoint guarantee that the next airline or authority will accept the documents.
For domestic travel, check the booking against the acceptable identification you intend to present. For international travel, resolve discrepancies against your passport and the applicable airline instructions.
See our guide to acceptable IDs for domestic flights in India.
Will TSA accept a misspelled name?
TSA screening in the United States is a separate process from airline ticket acceptance. Do not use another passenger’s experience as a guarantee that your error will be accepted.
Southwest’s identification guidance notes that some minor differences, such as middle initials or abbreviations caused by character limits, may be acceptable. That does not establish a general exemption for spelling errors or a different surname.
For TSA PreCheck, check that your reservation name, date of birth and Known Traveler Number are correct. A mismatch can affect your benefits.

Should You Cancel and Rebook Within 24 Hours?
Check the actual policy before cancelling. A free spelling correction, a cancellation window and a reservation hold are different facilities.
For covered U.S. airline reservations made at least seven days before departure, the U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to provide either a 24-hour unpaid hold or a 24-hour penalty-free cancellation option. They do not have to offer both.
The requirement does not automatically apply to travel-agent bookings, does not guarantee free name amendments and should not be treated as a worldwide rule for every flight.
Even when cancellation is free, the replacement ticket can cost more. Check the new fare and seat availability before deciding.

What If You Discover the Error at the Airport?
Contact the airline immediately. If you are already at the airport, seek the airline’s ticketing or assistance desk; airport security cannot reissue your ticket.
- Show the original travel document and booking confirmation.
- Explain whether the issue is spelling, name order, a missing component or a legal name change.
- Provide any earlier support reference and supporting documents.
- Ask whether the ticket and boarding pass can be corrected before the applicable cutoffs.
- If correction is impossible, ask about the available rebooking or cancellation options before becoming a no-show.
An airport correction is a possibility, not a dependable plan. Some policies require action well before departure, and the staff present may not have authority to complete the change.
How do I correct a boarding pass?
First establish whether only the display is unusual or whether the booking is wrong. If a correction is needed, have the airline complete it and issue a replacement boarding pass where required.
Do not edit the PDF yourself. Changing visible text does not correct the airline’s records or the information linked to the barcode.
How to Avoid the Problem Next Time
- Book with the travel document open beside you.
- Check each passenger separately, especially children and relatives.
- Review autofill and saved frequent-flyer profiles.
- Confirm surname and given-name fields before payment.
- Check the confirmation immediately after booking.
- Resolve single-name or blank-surname formats before buying.
- Review all flight segments after any correction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still fly if one letter is wrong?
Do not assume so. Request a correction and obtain confirmation from the airline or issuing agent. A small error may be easier to fix, but it is not automatically accepted.
Are surname and last name the same?
They generally refer to the same field on airline booking forms. Use the surname recorded in your travel document, following the carrier’s instructions.
My first and middle names are joined. Is that a typo?
Not necessarily. Joined names can be normal airline formatting. Check that the letters and underlying passenger details are correct before requesting a change.
Do airlines charge for name correction?
Some qualifying corrections are free; others can involve airline or agency charges. Ask for the applicable policy and an itemised explanation before paying.
Can I give my ticket to a relative by changing the name?
That is a passenger substitution, not a spelling correction. The airlines listed above do not permit ordinary ticket transfers through their name-correction processes.
Is a marriage certificate enough to travel with different names?
Do not assume it is. It can support a correction request, but airline and document requirements still apply. Resolve the mismatch before departure.
The agent says a remark has been added. Is that enough?
Ask whether the airline has approved the arrangement, whether the ticket needs reissue and whether every operating carrier has the correct details. A remark alone should not be treated as proof that all requirements are satisfied.
What if the travel agent made the mistake?
Keep the details you originally submitted and ask the agent to arrange correction. Request a written explanation of any charges and who is responsible for them. Do not allow a fee dispute to consume the correction deadline.
