Travelling to India with a drone requires more preparation than travelling with a camera. Before packing a DJI Mini, an FPV drone or another model, check three separate things: whether it can legally enter India, whether your airline will carry it, and whether you can operate it at your destination.
Do not assume that a personal-use drone, a used drone or a model weighing under 250 grams automatically qualifies for entry. Airline acceptance does not establish customs clearance, and customs clearance does not establish permission to fly.
Quick advice for tourists: If you cannot establish a lawful basis for bringing your particular drone into India before departure, leave it at home. For holiday photography, consider hiring a local operator who can demonstrate the required registration and permissions.
Can I Bring My Drone into India as a Tourist?
There is no simple blanket “yes” for tourists. India’s DGFT drone import policy prohibits imports of complete drones, including completely built, semi-knocked-down and completely knocked-down forms, subject to specified exceptions.
The exceptions cover qualifying research and development imports and defence or security purposes, with DGFT authorisation. They are not a general holiday-photography exemption. Drone components have a separate import treatment.
For accompanied baggage, temporary visits or re-imports, obtain written guidance from your arrival airport’s Customs office about your exact circumstances. Include your nationality, itinerary, model, serial number, ownership history and whether the drone will leave India with you. Ask what legal provision and documents would permit entry.
An airline representative saying “drones are allowed” usually answers a baggage question. It does not resolve Indian import requirements.
Can You Import a DJI Drone into India?
Buying a DJI drone in the USA, Dubai or another overseas market does not create an import exemption. The restriction concerns drones as goods, rather than a DJI-only prohibition.
Does a DJI Mini Under 250 Grams Get an Exemption?
Do not confuse a weight-based aviation exemption with permission to import. A nano-category drone can have different operating requirements, but that does not automatically settle its customs treatment.
Is DJI Banned in India?
That question combines several different issues. Importing a drone, possessing an existing drone and operating it are separate matters. A DJI listing from an Indian seller does not, by itself, prove lawful import, valid registration or permission to fly.
Before buying, ask for the invoice, serial number, import documentation where applicable, and registration details relevant to the aircraft. Avoid relying solely on a seller’s statement that “small drones need no paperwork.”
Do You Need to Declare a Drone at Indian Customs?
Yes. The passenger declaration in the 2026 customs regulations specifically lists drones. It directs passengers answering “Yes” to that item to report to a Customs officer at the Red Channel. See the Baggage (Declaration and Processing) Regulations, 2026.
Keep your invoice, model specifications, serial number and any relevant permissions accessible. Declaration is necessary, but it does not guarantee that Customs will release the drone.
How Much Customs Duty Applies to a Drone?
First establish whether entry is permitted; then establish any duty payable. Do not plan to solve an import restriction simply by paying a percentage of the purchase price.
For a permitted import or re-import, ask Customs to confirm the applicable assessment, valuation and any relief supported by your documents. There is no reliable single “tourist drone duty” figure that answers every situation.
Does WPC Approval Make the Drone Legal to Import?
Wireless equipment requirements are another part of the paperwork. Ask Customs and the Department of Telecommunications which WPC authorisation or equipment approval applies to your model. Do not treat a radio approval as a substitute for the separate import and aviation requirements.

What If You Previously Took the Drone Out of India?
A drone previously lawfully held in India and taken abroad presents a different documentation question from a newly purchased overseas drone. Contact Customs before leaving India and ask how to record its identity for your return.

An export record helps establish the identity and history of an item; it does not replace permissions required for that item. Obtain confirmation for the drone itself rather than assuming the process for an ordinary camera will be sufficient.
Can You Put a Drone in Checked Baggage?
Sometimes the drone body can travel in checked baggage, but the answer depends on the airline. Spare lithium batteries must travel in cabin baggage. Check every operating carrier on a connecting itinerary.
Air India’s Published Drone Policy
For domestic carriage, Air India’s restricted baggage guidance allows qualifying drones up to 2 kg in cabin or checked baggage, subject to its conditions and partner-airline rules.
- The drone must be switched off and suitably packed.
- For checked carriage, batteries must be removed and carried in the cabin.
- Nano drones containing lithium batteries are accepted only as cabin baggage.
- Its drone-specific guidance excludes batteries over 100 Wh from passenger baggage and directs them to an approved cargo arrangement.
For international flights, Air India also makes carriage subject to the rules of the country concerned. Confirm battery quantities and your exact configuration directly with the airline.

Protect terminals with suitable covers or insulating tape and keep batteries separated. Do not travel with damaged or swollen batteries. If staff take your cabin bag for gate-checking, remove spare batteries before handing it over.

Can I Take My DJI Mini 3 on a Plane?
Its battery size can fit ordinary airline limits, but the journey still needs airline and destination approval. DJI lists the Mini 3’s standard battery at 18.1 Wh and its Battery Plus at 28.4 Wh.
Those ratings are below 100 Wh. However, a low battery rating does not establish permission to bring the aircraft into India. Also check the aircraft’s actual take-off weight: a heavier battery or accessories can change whether it falls within the nano category.
Send your airline the model name, battery rating, number of batteries and proposed packing arrangement. Ask for a response covering the entire itinerary, including any domestic connection.
What Are the Drone Rules for Flying in India?
The Drone Rules, 2021 framework distinguishes aircraft categories, pilot requirements and airspace zones. Later amendments replaced the remote pilot licence terminology with a remote pilot certificate.
- Nano category: Up to 250 grams, based on the applicable all-up weight.
- Pilot certificate: Exemptions exist for nano drones and non-commercial micro-drone operations.
- Green zones: Prior airspace permission is generally unnecessary within the applicable limits, but other obligations still apply.
- Yellow and red zones: Require the relevant authorisation before operating.
Check the current airspace map before every flight. A green-zone location does not remove property access, privacy, wildlife, local security or site-specific restrictions.
Do Not Assume You Can Register a Drone After Arrival
DGCA’s published notice on non-type-certified UAS registration states that registration has been temporarily suspended and describes a contact process for locally manufactured nano/model aircraft.
This makes “bring it first and register it later” particularly poor travel planning. Verify the current process and eligibility for your aircraft before buying or travelling. A pilot-certificate exemption should not be read as a blanket exemption from registration or import requirements.
Can Foreign Tourists Fly Drones?
A foreign pilot qualification or overseas drone registration does not automatically establish eligibility in India. Before planning to operate, ask DGCA to confirm what applies to your nationality, aircraft and intended activity.
If you need aerial footage for a wedding, film or commercial project, ask a local operator to provide evidence of aircraft compliance, pilot qualifications where required, and permissions for the actual location.
Can You Fly in Restricted Regions or Popular Tourist Areas?
Permission to visit a place is not permission to fly a drone there. Protected Area Permits, Restricted Area Permits and other visitor permissions concern access. Drone operations require a separate check.
For foreign visitor requirements, consult the Ministry of Home Affairs’ protected and restricted area information and the destination administration. Requirements can depend on nationality, itinerary and current orders.

- Prepare documents: Keep invoices, ownership records, export evidence and permissions together.
- Declare on arrival: Follow the drone declaration requirement and report to the Red Channel.
- Confirm operation separately: Verify registration, pilot requirements, airspace and local permissions before flying.
Removing the original box does not change the rules. Pack to protect the equipment, and give accurate information about what you are carrying.
