Can You Save Money on Flight Tickets by Changing Your Payment Method?

Updated: September 12, 2026

You find a flight at a good price, enter your passenger details and reach the payment page. Now you see a UPI offer, a credit card discount and a convenience fee. Would switching payment methods make the ticket cheaper? Could paying cash at an airport counter save even more?

Yes, changing your payment method can sometimes save money on flight tickets. The saving depends on the offer you qualify for, the fees charged by the booking channel and any borrowing costs. Cash, credit card and UPI are not automatically cheaper than one another.

Payments for flight tickets in India

This guide explains how to compare the actual cost of each option when booking flights in India.

Last checked: Payment offers and fee schedules can change; confirm the terms and final amount before paying.

Quick answer: Compare the final payable price after an eligible instant discount, then account for any financing costs. Evaluate future cashback and reward points separately. Paying through UPI does not automatically remove an airline’s convenience fee, and paying cash at a counter does not guarantee a cheaper ticket.

How Can Your Payment Method Change the Cost of a Flight Ticket?

A payment method can affect the amount you spend through an instant discount, a payment-related fee, cashback, rewards or financing charges. These affect different parts of the transaction.

Price component What it means What to compare
Ticket price and required extras The quoted fare and services you need The same flight, fare type, baggage and other inclusions
Booking or convenience fee A charge associated with the booking service or channel Whether it remains when you switch payment methods
Payment-specific charge An additional charge where applicable to the selected payment option The amount shown after selecting that option
Instant discount A reduction applied before payment The actual deduction, rather than the advertised maximum
Cashback or rewards A benefit credited or earned later Eligibility, timing, caps and how you can use it
Financing cost Interest and applicable fees for borrowing or instalments The total repayment cost

Separate the payment method from the booking channel. Switching from a credit card to UPI on the same website changes the payment method. Moving from a travel portal to an airline website or airport counter changes the booking channel. The second comparison may involve different fares, fees and promotions.

Cash vs Credit Card vs UPI for Flight Tickets

The table below uses “UPI” to mean a payment funded directly from your bank account. Credit-card-funded UPI needs a separate check.

Payment method Possible advantage Possible disadvantage When to consider it
Bank-account UPI An eligible UPI promotion may reduce the checkout price; payment uses available funds Convenience fees can still apply, and the offer may not combine with other discounts When its final price is lower and you want to pay directly from your account
Credit card paid in full An eligible card offer or useful rewards may improve value Offer exclusions, reward restrictions and interest if repayment conditions are not met When the benefit exceeds any extra cost and you can meet the issuer’s full-payment requirements
Credit card EMI An eligible instalment offer may provide a discount and spread payments Interest, processing charges and other applicable costs can reduce the saving Only after comparing the complete repayment amount
Cash at an authorised counter or agent Useful where cash is accepted or you need booking assistance Counter or service fees may apply; visiting the location also takes time and money When a confirmed all-inclusive quote makes the trip worthwhile

Can Paying by UPI Reduce Flight Booking Charges?

UPI can make a booking cheaper when an eligible promotion reduces your final price. However, selecting UPI does not automatically remove a booking or convenience fee.

A UPI discount and a fee waiver are different

A discount reduces an eligible part of the price. A fee waiver removes a particular charge. You can receive a UPI discount while still paying a convenience fee.

For example, Air India’s published UPI offer terms describe a base-fare discount, with other applicable charges and taxes payable separately. The terms also state that the offer cannot be combined with another offer and may be changed or withdrawn.

Before paying: Apply the eligible UPI code, select UPI and inspect the revised total. Compare that amount with the card option after applying its eligible offer.

What about a RuPay credit card linked to UPI?

UPI is also available with supported RuPay credit cards, as explained by NPCI’s RuPay credit card on UPI guidance. If you select a linked credit card, the payment uses credit rather than your bank-account balance.

Do not assume this qualifies for both a UPI promotion and a credit card promotion. Check the merchant’s offer rules, the accepted payment route and your card’s terms.

When Can a Credit Card Save Money on Flight Tickets?

A credit card can offer better value when you qualify for an instant discount or earn rewards you can use. Start with the amount payable today, then assess any additional benefit.

Check the exact card and transaction requirements

  • Is your specific card eligible, or only selected cards from the bank?
  • Does the offer require a minimum booking amount?
  • Is the discount capped per booking, passenger or month?
  • Does it apply to a regular purchase or only to EMI?
  • Does it require a particular website, app or promo code?

Air India’s official offers page lists different payment promotions, including card and EMI offers. Open the individual terms before deciding that a headline discount applies to your booking.

Count rewards separately from immediate savings

A reward estimate is only useful if the transaction qualifies and you can redeem the benefit. Check reward exclusions, earning caps, expiry dates and redemption charges in your card programme.

If one option costs ₹300 more today but promises points you would value at only ₹100, those points do not make it the cheaper option. Avoid assigning a cash value to unfamiliar rewards just to justify a higher checkout price.

Interest can outweigh a ticket discount

Check your issuer’s repayment rules before counting a credit card discount as a saving. For example, SBI Card’s terms explain that its interest-free period is suspended when a previous bill has an outstanding balance. Paying only the minimum amount due is not equivalent to paying the bill in full.

Read EMI offers beyond the discount headline

An EMI promotion may include borrowing costs. As checked on 12 September 2026, Air India’s HDFC Bank EMI offer terms list processing fees, interest provisions and applicable taxes alongside the discount.

EMI comparison: Add the total instalments, processing fees and other applicable charges. Account for any discount already reflected in that calculation only once. Compare the result with an upfront UPI or regular-card payment.

Are Flight Tickets Cheaper When You Pay Cash at an Airport Counter?

Not necessarily. Cash can be an accepted payment option without being a discounted payment option.

IndiGo’s booking guidance lists cash acceptance at airports, participating travel agents and IndiGo shops. Confirm the chosen location’s payment arrangements and opening hours before visiting.

A counter quote may include a booking fee. You should also account for the cost of reaching the airport or office and compare the same fare conditions.

Ask for the complete quote before travelling

  • What is the final amount for the flight and fare type I want?
  • Does it include all booking or service fees?
  • Is the quoted price available when paying cash?
  • What baggage and other services are included?
  • What are the cancellation terms and refund process?

Example: If a counter quote is ₹150 lower but getting there costs ₹250, you would spend ₹100 more overall. If you are already at the airport, the comparison may be different.

Keep the payment receipt and issued ticket. Confirm the booking reference and passenger details before leaving.

Airline Examples: Does Switching Payment Methods Remove the Fee?

These examples were checked on 12 September 2026. They illustrate why you should inspect the airline’s own rules rather than assume UPI or cash is fee-free.

Air India

Air India’s booking FAQ lists a ₹399 domestic convenience fee per customer per ticket for website, app and call-centre bookings. It states that the fee applies across payment methods.

On those published standard terms, changing from card payment to UPI does not itself remove the fee. An eligible promotion may still reduce the overall amount.

IndiGo

IndiGo’s payment FAQ lists an online domestic convenience fee of up to ₹499 per person per segment for payment options including cards and UPI. It also lists a domestic booking fee of ₹350 plus GST per passenger per sector for call-centre and airport-counter bookings.

These are different charging structures, so compare the complete itinerary total. Check the current fee schedule and amount displayed for your booking.

Example: Which Payment Method Actually Saves Money?

Illustration only: The following figures are invented to demonstrate the comparison. They are not live airline prices or offers. Assume every option includes the same flight, fare conditions and required extras, and all listed fees include applicable taxes.

Item UPI online Credit card online Cash at counter
Ticket and required extras before the listed fee and offer ₹6,000 ₹6,000 ₹6,000
Booking/payment fees ₹300 ₹350 ₹200
Eligible instant discount −₹250 −₹500 ₹0
Amount paid for the booking ₹6,050 ₹5,850 ₹6,200
Additional travel cost to reach the counter ₹0 ₹0 ₹250
Total cost before any financing charges ₹6,050 ₹5,850 ₹6,450

In this example, the credit card option saves ₹200 compared with UPI, provided it does not incur financing costs. If that card offer were unavailable, its booking price would rise to ₹6,350 and UPI would become the cheaper online option.

This is why there is no permanent winner: the eligible discount and complete cost determine the result.

What Should You Check in a Flight Payment Offer?

  1. Validity: Check the booking dates, eligible days and any travel-date restrictions.
  2. Minimum spend: Confirm which components count towards the qualifying amount.
  3. Discount basis: Check whether the percentage applies to base fare or another defined amount.
  4. Maximum benefit: “Up to ₹2,000” does not mean every booking receives ₹2,000.
  5. Payment eligibility: Verify the bank, card type, UPI option and whether EMI is required.
  6. Booking eligibility: Look for restrictions on routes, cabins, passenger categories or multicity trips.
  7. Combining offers: Check whether applying one code replaces another discount.
  8. Cashback conditions: Establish when it arrives, where it is credited and how it can be used.
  9. Cancellation treatment: Read what happens to the discount, cashback and fees if you cancel.

Instant discount vs cashback

An instant discount lowers the amount you pay at checkout. Cashback is received later under the offer’s conditions. Record these as separate figures rather than subtracting uncertain cashback from the amount you must pay today.

Check the total for every passenger and flight segment

A fee charged per passenger per segment can add up on family or connecting bookings. A discount may have a different cap. Use the booking’s actual total instead of multiplying a headline saving without checking its limits.

How to Choose the Cheapest Suitable Payment Method

  1. Select the exact flight and fare: Match baggage, flexibility and any required extras.
  2. Record the price before payment offers: Note which fees are already included.
  3. Test an eligible UPI offer: Record the final amount shown.
  4. Test an eligible card offer: Confirm whether it requires EMI and record the revised total.
  5. Check additional costs: Include financing charges or the cost of visiting a counter.
  6. Assess later benefits separately: Count rewards or cashback only after reviewing their conditions.
  7. Review once more before paying: Ensure the fare, passenger details and selected extras still match your comparison.
  8. Save the confirmation: Keep the ticket, payment receipt and relevant offer terms.

Practical rule: Choose the option with the lowest verified total for the ticket you need. A larger advertised discount is useful only when it produces a better result after fees and other costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can changing my payment method make a flight ticket cheaper?

Yes. An eligible payment offer or a difference in fees can reduce your final cost. Compare the same flight and fare after selecting each payment option and applying its eligible discount.

Is UPI always cheaper than a credit card for flight bookings?

No. UPI may have the better offer on one booking, while a credit card may produce a lower total on another. Compare the checkout amount and any additional financing costs.

Does paying by UPI remove the convenience fee?

Not automatically. Airlines can apply booking or convenience fees to UPI payments too. Check whether your particular offer removes the fee or simply discounts another part of the price.

Can I buy flight tickets with cash at an airport?

Some airline counters accept cash. Confirm acceptance, opening hours and the complete price with the specific counter before visiting. Cash payment does not guarantee a lower fare or a fee waiver.

Are airport-counter bookings cheaper than online bookings?

They can be, but there is no guarantee. Compare the same fare with all service fees included, then account for any cost of travelling to the counter.

Should I choose EMI to get a bigger flight discount?

Compare the full repayment cost first. Processing fees, interest and applicable taxes can reduce or exceed the advertised saving. An EMI offer should not be compared using the discount alone.

Can I combine a UPI offer with a credit card offer?

Do not assume that you can. Promotions have specific payment and combination rules. A credit card linked to UPI does not automatically qualify for both offers.

Which matters more: cashback or an instant discount?

An instant discount gives a confirmed reduction at checkout. Cashback may also be valuable, but compare its eligibility, credit date and usage conditions before treating it as an equivalent saving.
