How Much Gold Can You Bring From Dubai to India?

Updated: September 01, 2026

Bringing gold from Dubai to India is legal, but there are two very different limits travelers often confuse. A qualifying resident or tourist of Indian origin who has lived abroad for more than one year can bring certain gold jewellery duty-free up to 40 grams for a female passenger or 20 grams for another passenger. Gold bars, biscuits and coins do not qualify for this jewellery exemption.

A separate concession allows an eligible passenger of Indian origin or a qualifying Indian-passport holder returning after at least six months abroad to bring up to 1 kg of gold, including specified bars, coins and unstudded ornaments, by declaring it and paying the applicable customs duty. Since May 13, 2026, the relevant concessional customs components are 10% Basic Customs Duty plus 1% AIDC, or 11% in total.

So buying gold in Dubai may still make sense in some situations, but the comparison is not simply “Dubai gold price versus India gold price.” You must add Indian customs duty, Dubai making charges, exchange-rate costs and any other purchase expenses before deciding whether you actually save money.

How Much Gold Can You Bring From Dubai to India

How Much Gold Can You Bring From Dubai to India?

There are two important limits:

  • Duty-free jewellery: up to 40 grams for a qualifying female passenger or 20 grams for another qualifying passenger, after residing abroad for more than one year.
  • Gold on payment of concessional duty: eligible passengers returning after at least six months abroad can import up to 1 kg of qualifying gold in baggage.

These rules should not be mixed together.

The 40g/20g provision is a duty-free jewellery allowance. The 1 kg provision is a dutiable import concession.

Buying a 1 kg gold bar in Dubai does not mean you can walk into India duty-free with it.

Dubai to India Gold Limits at a Glance

Gold Limit Duty Main Condition
Qualifying gold jewellery – female passenger Up to 40 g Duty-free Resident or tourist of Indian origin residing abroad for more than 1 year
Qualifying gold jewellery – passenger other than female Up to 20 g Duty-free Resident or tourist of Indian origin residing abroad for more than 1 year
Gold bars / eligible coins / unstudded ornaments under baggage gold concession Up to 1 kg Customs duty payable Eligible Indian-origin/passport passenger after at least 6 months abroad
Gold bar under ordinary ₹75,000 baggage allowance Not covered Dutiable Gold other than ornaments is excluded from general allowance
More than 1 kg under passenger gold concession Not covered by concession Different import rules apply Do not treat as ordinary passenger baggage concession

How Much Gold Jewellery Is Duty-Free From Dubai to India?

India's Baggage Rules provide a special jewellery allowance for a resident or tourist of Indian origin who has been residing abroad for more than one year.

The current duty-free limits are:

  • Female passenger: up to 40 grams of jewellery
  • Passenger other than female: up to 20 grams of jewellery

Important 2026 change: The current rule is based on weight. The old jewellery value ceilings that used to accompany the 40 g and 20 g limits are no longer part of the new Baggage Rules.

The rule applies to jewellery, which Indian Customs defines as articles of adornment ordinarily worn by a person and made of gold, silver, platinum or similar precious metals, whether studded or not.

Does the ₹75,000 Duty-Free Allowance Cover Extra Gold?

Do not add ₹75,000 of gold bars or coins on top of the jewellery allowance.

Under the current Baggage Rules, gold or silver in any form other than ornaments is excluded from the normal general free allowance.

This means a gold bar, biscuit or coin does not become duty-free simply because its value falls under the normal passenger baggage allowance.

Can You Carry 1 kg Gold From Dubai to India?

Yes, an eligible passenger may import up to 1 kg of gold as baggage, but it is not duty-free.

The concession can cover qualifying gold such as:

  • Gold bars bearing the required identifying information
  • Qualifying gold coins
  • Tola bars
  • Unstudded gold ornaments

The passenger must satisfy India's eligibility conditions and pay the applicable customs duty.

“1 kg allowed” does not mean “1 kg free.” It means an eligible passenger may use the passenger-baggage gold concession for up to 1 kg after declaration and payment of duty.

Who Qualifies for the 1 kg Gold Concession?

CBIC's passenger guidance provides the concession to an eligible passenger of Indian origin or a qualifying passenger holding an Indian passport who is returning to India after a period of not less than six months of stay abroad.

Short visits to India during those six months can be ignored when the total duration of such visits does not exceed the permitted period under the rule.

The key requirements include:

  • Eligible Indian-origin or qualifying Indian-passport status
  • At least six months stay abroad
  • Gold within the permitted form and quantity
  • Maximum 1 kg under the concession
  • Declaration to Indian Customs
  • Payment of applicable customs duty in the prescribed manner

An ordinary foreign tourist should not assume that the 1 kg passenger-gold concession applies. CBIC's current passenger guidance specifically states that import of gold as baggage by a foreign national is prohibited under this concession.

What Is the Customs Duty on Gold From UAE to India?

This is an area where travelers can easily find outdated numbers online.

CBIC's traveller material published earlier in 2026 still refers to a concessional rate of:

5% Basic Customs Duty + 1% AIDC = 6%

However, a later Customs notification changed the relevant rate.

From May 13, 2026, Notification 15/2026-Customs increased the Basic Customs Duty on the relevant gold entries from 5% to 10%. With the existing 1% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess, the current concessional customs components total 11%.

Component Current Rate
Basic Customs Duty 10%
AIDC 1%
Total concessional components 11%

The actual duty payable is calculated using the customs-assessed value/tariff value applicable at the time, not necessarily simply the retail invoice amount converted using your own exchange rate.

Watch for old 6% articles. They may be quoting CBIC material issued before the May 2026 duty amendment.

Can You Bring Gold Bars or Coins From Dubai Duty-Free?

No. Gold bars, biscuits and coins do not qualify for the special 40g/20g duty-free jewellery allowance.

The special duty-free allowance applies to jewellery.

Gold in forms such as:

  • Bars
  • Biscuits
  • Coins
  • Bullion

must be treated under the applicable gold-import rules.

Eligible passengers may be able to bring qualifying bars or coins within the 1 kg concession after paying duty.

Does Gold Worn on Your Body Count Toward the Duty-Free Limit?

Wearing newly purchased Dubai gold does not automatically make it duty-free.

Customs looks at the nature and circumstances of the goods, not simply whether a necklace is around your neck instead of inside your suitcase.

There is an important difference between:

  • Genuine used personal jewellery reasonably associated with your travel
  • New jewellery purchased abroad and being imported into India
  • Commercial quantities or multiple new pieces

Putting a new Dubai necklace on before landing is not a customs loophole. If the jewellery is an import subject to declaration or duty, wearing it does not erase that obligation.

Can Children Carry Gold Duty-Free From Dubai to India?

Do not assume every child automatically creates another 20 g or 40 g gold allowance for the family.

The special jewellery rule is tied to an eligible passenger who is a resident or tourist of Indian origin and has resided abroad for more than one year.

The general passenger allowance and the jewellery allowance have their own eligibility rules, and allowances cannot simply be pooled to justify a larger family gold purchase.

Practical rule: Do not buy a large quantity of Dubai gold and divide it among children solely to multiply duty-free allowances. Customs can examine who owns the jewellery, the passenger's eligibility, quantity, packaging and whether the baggage is genuinely bona fide personal baggage.

Does the Duty-Free Gold Limit Reset on Every Trip?

There is no customs “account” that simply credits you another 20 g or 40 g whenever you board a new flight.

The Baggage Rules assess eligibility on arrival, including the required period of residence abroad and whether the goods are bona fide passenger baggage.

A qualifying person who continues to reside abroad may still satisfy the residence condition on a later trip, but repeated importation of newly purchased jewellery can attract scrutiny, particularly where the pattern resembles commercial importation rather than genuine personal baggage.

Do not treat the jewellery allowance as a repeatable gold-import business strategy. Commercial goods are specifically excluded from the definition of personal effects and bona fide passenger baggage.

How Do You Declare Gold at Indian Customs?

If your gold is dutiable or otherwise requires declaration, do not walk through the Green Channel hoping it will not be noticed.

The basic process is:

  • Determine whether the gold exceeds your duty-free entitlement.
  • Keep the Dubai purchase invoice.
  • File the baggage declaration electronically where applicable.
  • Choose the Red Channel on arrival.
  • Tell the Customs officer exactly what gold you are carrying.
  • Present the gold and supporting documents for assessment.
  • Pay the assessed customs duty.
  • Keep the customs receipt and duty-payment documentation.

See India Customs Red Channel vs Green Channel.

Can You Declare Gold Before Landing in India?

Yes. India's new customs declaration system allows passengers to submit baggage declarations electronically.

CBIC's ATITHI system can be used by international travelers for baggage and other customs declarations.

Under the 2026 declaration procedures, an accompanied baggage declaration can generally be filed electronically up to three days before arrival.

This can be particularly useful if you already know you are carrying dutiable gold.

See ATITHI Indian Customs Guide: How to Declare Goods Before Arrival.

How Much Gold Can You Carry Out of Dubai?

There is no simple Dubai rule saying every departing passenger may export exactly 1 kg of gold. The widely discussed 1 kg figure is primarily relevant to India's concessional passenger-baggage import rule for eligible arrivals.

Dubai Customs separately requires travelers to comply with UAE declaration rules for precious items, commercial quantities and other declarable goods.

Dubai Customs specifically identifies:

  • Gold
  • Jewellery
  • Silver
  • Other precious metals

among items travelers may need to declare under its passenger customs procedures.

Buying 1 kg of gold legally in Dubai does not automatically mean you can import 1 kg into India without duty. Dubai sale rules and Indian import rules are separate.

Is It Worth Buying Gold in Dubai and Bringing It to India?

Sometimes—but calculate the landed cost before buying.

Dubai has historically attracted gold buyers because of:

  • Highly competitive bullion and jewellery market
  • Transparent daily gold pricing
  • Large number of jewellery retailers
  • Wide choice of 22K and 24K products
  • Competition in making charges

But an Indian traveler should compare:

Dubai Purchase India Alternative
Dubai gold price India gold price
Dubai making charges India making charges
UAE tax treatment Indian tax treatment
AED/INR conversion cost No FX conversion
Indian customs duty if applicable No passenger import duty
Possible resale/purity considerations Local hallmark/resale considerations

Simple Dubai Gold Cost Formula

Dubai landed cost in India = Dubai purchase price + making charges + currency conversion costs + applicable Indian customs duty + other relevant purchase costs.

If the Dubai-to-India price advantage is only 3% or 5% but you owe approximately 11% concessional customs duty, the apparent saving can disappear quickly.

However, qualifying jewellery that genuinely falls within the 40 g or 20 g duty-free allowance creates a different calculation.

Is Gold Cheaper in India or Dubai?

Neither location is always cheaper.

International gold prices are closely linked globally. The final retail price differs because of:

  • Local taxes
  • Import duties
  • Currency exchange rates
  • Dealer premiums
  • Making charges
  • Purity
  • Retail competition

Dubai can appear cheaper at the retail counter, especially for high-purity gold, but that does not automatically mean it remains cheaper after legally importing it into India.

Is 24K Gold Cheaper in Dubai?

Dubai has an extremely competitive 24K gold market, and the displayed per-gram price can sometimes be attractive compared with India.

However, 24K bullion purchased in Dubai is precisely where Indian customs duty matters most because gold bars and coins are not covered by the 40 g / 20 g duty-free jewellery concession.

Do not compare a Dubai 24K bullion price with an India retail price while ignoring Customs. Compare the legal landed cost after Indian duty.

Where Can You Check Today's Gold Price in Dubai?

For a reliable Dubai retail benchmark, use the Dubai Jewellery Group's Dubai City of Gold rate page.

It publishes suggested Dubai retail gold rates in AED per gram for:

  • 24K
  • 22K
  • 21K
  • 18K

Check today's official Dubai Jewellery Group gold rate.

Use the live rate instead of putting a fixed Dubai gold price into your travel budget. Gold can move significantly between the day you plan the trip and the day you actually buy.

What Is the Price of 1 kg of Gold in Dubai Today?

One kilogram equals 1,000 grams.

To estimate the raw 24K gold value:

Current Dubai 24K rate per gram × 1,000 = approximate gold value of 1 kg.

For example, if the displayed 24K rate were AED X per gram:

AED X × 1,000 = AED X,000 for 1 kg

Then add any retailer premium, fabrication/making charges or other applicable costs.

Because gold prices change throughout the market, check the Dubai Jewellery Group live gold rate on the day you plan to purchase.

Which Country Has the Cheapest Gold?

There is no country that is permanently the cheapest place in the world to buy gold.

Gold is globally traded, so wholesale prices remain closely connected across major markets.

Countries and regions frequently considered competitive include:

  • UAE / Dubai
  • Singapore
  • Hong Kong
  • Switzerland

But the relevant question for an Indian traveler is not:

“Where is gold cheapest?”

It is:

“Where is gold cheapest after purchase costs, currency conversion, Indian customs duty and resale considerations?”

Should Gold Be in Cabin Baggage or Checked Baggage?

High-value gold should generally remain under your control rather than being placed in checked baggage.

Checked luggage can be:

  • Delayed
  • Misrouted
  • Damaged
  • Opened for inspection
  • Stolen from

Keep valuable jewellery and gold securely with you where airline and security requirements permit.

Cabin baggage does not mean hidden baggage. If gold must be declared to Customs, its location in your hand bag does not remove the declaration requirement.

What Documents Should You Keep When Buying Gold in Dubai?

Keep documentation showing exactly what you purchased.

  • Original purchase invoice
  • Jeweller's name and address
  • Purchase date
  • Gold purity / karat
  • Weight
  • Description of jewellery, bar or coin
  • Serial number where applicable
  • Payment receipt
  • Any purity or authenticity certificate supplied

Do not remove all packaging and receipts merely because you think unboxed gold will look “used.”

Customs can assess the circumstances of import. An invoice is useful evidence of value, source and description even when duty ultimately applies.

Common Mistakes When Bringing Gold From Dubai to India

Mistake Better Approach
Assuming 1 kg is duty-free Understand that 1 kg is a concessional dutiable route for eligible passengers
Applying the 40g/20g jewellery rule to bars Use it only for qualifying jewellery
Assuming wearing jewellery avoids Customs Declare when required regardless of where it is carried
Using the normal ₹75,000 allowance for a gold bar Remember gold other than ornaments is excluded
Using the old 6% duty figure Account for the May 2026 customs amendment
Dividing large purchases among family members Make sure every passenger independently qualifies and the baggage is bona fide
Walking through Green Channel with dutiable gold Declare through the proper Customs/Red Channel process
Comparing only Dubai and India shop prices Compare landed cost after duty and FX costs
Putting valuable gold in checked luggage Keep valuables under your control where permitted

Bottom Line

You can legally bring gold from Dubai to India, but there is no blanket “1 kg duty-free” allowance.

The key rules are:

  • A qualifying female passenger who has resided abroad for more than one year may bring up to 40 g of jewellery duty-free.
  • Another qualifying passenger may bring up to 20 g of jewellery duty-free.
  • The allowance applies to jewellery—not gold bars, biscuits or coins.
  • An eligible Indian-origin or qualifying Indian-passport passenger returning after at least six months abroad can bring up to 1 kg of qualifying gold under the concessional baggage route after paying duty.
  • The May 2026 customs amendment raised the relevant concessional Basic Customs Duty to 10%; together with the 1% AIDC, the current concessional components total 11%.
  • Dutiable gold should be declared to Indian Customs rather than taken through the Green Channel undeclared.

Dubai can still be an attractive place to buy gold, but always compare the legal landed cost in India, not just the shop price in Dubai.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much gold can I carry from Dubai to India?

A qualifying resident or tourist of Indian origin residing abroad for more than one year can bring jewellery duty-free up to 40 grams for a female passenger or 20 grams for another passenger. Separately, an eligible passenger returning after at least six months abroad may import up to 1 kg of qualifying gold after declaration and payment of customs duty.

Can I carry 1 kg gold from Dubai to India?

Yes, if you meet India's eligibility requirements for the concessional passenger gold import scheme. The 1 kg is not duty-free. The gold must be declared and the applicable customs duty paid.

Can I bring 1 kg of gold from Dubai without paying duty?

No. The 1 kg provision is a concessional dutiable import route, not a 1 kg duty-free allowance.

How much gold jewellery can a woman bring from Dubai to India duty-free?

A qualifying female passenger who is a resident or tourist of Indian origin and has resided abroad for more than one year can bring up to 40 grams of jewellery duty-free under the current Baggage Rules.

How much gold can a man bring from Dubai to India duty-free?

The current Baggage Rules use the wording “passenger other than a female passenger.” A qualifying passenger in that category who has resided abroad for more than one year can bring up to 20 grams of jewellery duty-free.

Can I bring a gold bar from Dubai to India duty-free?

No. The special 40g/20g exemption applies to jewellery. Gold bars, biscuits and coins do not qualify for that duty-free jewellery allowance.

Does the ₹75,000 India duty-free allowance include gold bars?

No. Gold or silver in forms other than ornaments is excluded from India's ordinary general passenger free allowance.

What is the customs duty on gold from UAE to India?

For eligible passengers using the concessional gold baggage route, the May 2026 amendment increased the relevant Basic Customs Duty to 10%. With the existing 1% AIDC, the current concessional customs components total 11%. The amount payable is assessed by Customs using the applicable valuation rules.

Why do some websites still say gold customs duty is 6%?

CBIC traveller material issued earlier in 2026 referred to 5% BCD plus 1% AIDC. Notification 15/2026-Customs subsequently increased the relevant Basic Customs Duty to 10% effective May 13, 2026, so older 6% references can be outdated.

How do I declare gold at Indian Customs?

Declare dutiable gold through the appropriate electronic baggage declaration process where applicable and use the Red Channel on arrival. Present the gold and purchase documents to Customs, have the duty assessed and pay the amount required before clearance.

Can I declare Dubai gold before I land in India?

India's 2026 customs system allows accompanied baggage declarations to be submitted electronically before arrival, including through the ATITHI/automated Customs system. A declaration can generally be filed up to three days before arrival.

Does gold worn on the body count toward the customs limit?

Wearing gold does not automatically exempt newly purchased jewellery from Customs. Genuine used personal jewellery can be treated differently depending on the circumstances, but wearing a new Dubai purchase is not a loophole for avoiding declaration or duty.

Can children carry gold duty-free from Dubai to India?

Do not assume every child automatically provides an extra gold allowance. The special jewellery allowance applies to qualifying passengers meeting the residence and status requirements. Family allowances cannot simply be pooled, and Customs can examine whether the jewellery is bona fide passenger baggage.

Does the gold duty-free allowance reset every trip?

There is no simple gold quota account that automatically resets every flight. Customs evaluates eligibility and bona fide baggage on each arrival. Repeated importation of newly purchased jewellery can attract scrutiny if it appears commercial.

How much gold can I carry out of Dubai?

Dubai does not provide a simple universal 1 kg passenger export allowance corresponding to India's rule. Dubai Customs has its own declaration requirements for gold, jewellery and precious metals, while India's 1 kg concession determines what an eligible passenger may import under the Indian baggage gold scheme.

Can I buy 1 kg of gold in Dubai?

Dubai's gold market sells bullion in large denominations, so purchasing 1 kg can be possible through an appropriate dealer. However, buying it legally in Dubai does not make the gold duty-free in India. Indian baggage eligibility, declaration and customs duty rules still apply.

Is it worth buying gold in Dubai and bringing it to India?

It depends on the price difference. Compare the Dubai purchase price, making charges, currency conversion costs and Indian customs duty with the final cost of buying comparable gold in India. A small Dubai price advantage can disappear if customs duty is payable.

Is gold cheaper in Dubai or India?

Dubai can sometimes have competitive retail gold prices and making charges, but neither market is always cheaper. Compare same-day prices for the same purity and include Indian customs duty when the Dubai gold is dutiable.

Is 24K gold cheaper in Dubai?

Dubai often has competitive 24K pricing, but bullion imported into India does not receive the special 40g/20g jewellery exemption. The legal landed cost after customs duty is what matters.

Where can I check today's Dubai gold price?

The Dubai Jewellery Group publishes current suggested retail gold rates for 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K gold on its Dubai City of Gold website.

How do I calculate the price of 1 kg gold in Dubai?

Check the current Dubai 24K price per gram and multiply it by 1,000. That provides an approximate raw gold value for 1 kg before dealer premiums, fabrication charges or other costs.

Which country has the cheapest gold?

No country is permanently cheapest because gold is globally traded and exchange rates, taxes, premiums and local fees change. Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Switzerland are often competitive markets, but Indian travelers should compare the final landed cost after customs duty.

Should I put Dubai gold in checked baggage?

High-value gold is generally safer under your control rather than in checked baggage, subject to airline and security rules. Whether it is in cabin or checked baggage does not change your obligation to declare dutiable gold to Customs.
