Free Airline Services and Perks in India

What do you get free when flying in India? Depending on the airline, aircraft, route and ticket type, your fare may include meals, drinking water, entertainment, Wi-Fi, baggage, wheelchair assistance, infant equipment or even airport lounge access.

However, “free” does not always mean every passenger receives the service. Some perks are included only with particular fares, international routes, premium cabins, credit cards or loyalty status. This guide explains what Indian airline passengers may receive without paying an additional fee—and what usually costs extra.

Free Airline Services and Perks

What Do Airlines Give for Free in India?

Quick answer: Most passengers receive the basic services necessary to complete the flight, but meals, checked baggage, entertainment, Wi-Fi, headphones and seat selection are not universally free. What is included depends on the airline, route, fare family, cabin and aircraft operating the flight.

Services that may be included without an additional payment include:

  • Cabin baggage within the airline’s permitted limit
  • Checked baggage when included in the selected fare
  • Drinking water during the flight
  • Meals or refreshments on eligible Air India and international services
  • Movies, television programs and music on equipped aircraft
  • Wireless entertainment streamed to your own device
  • Wheelchair and disability assistance for eligible passengers
  • Carriage of certain mobility and assistive devices
  • Infant bassinets on certain aircraft, subject to availability
  • One stroller, carrycot or infant car seat under some airline policies
  • Online check-in and a digital boarding pass
  • Airport lounge access through an eligible cabin, credit card or membership
  • Additional baggage through airline loyalty status

Many of these services are included in the ticket price rather than being truly free. The important question is whether you must pay an additional fee after choosing your fare.

What Does “Free” Really Mean on an Airline?

Airlines use several different types of complimentary benefits.

Type of Benefit How It Works Example
Included with every eligible ticket No separate payment is required after purchasing the fare. Permitted cabin baggage or basic onboard assistance.
Included with selected fares The service is part of Flex, premium or bundled fares but not the cheapest fare. Meals, preferred seats or additional baggage.
Included on selected routes The same airline may provide the service internationally but not domestically. Meals, alcohol, blankets and entertainment.
Included on selected aircraft The service depends on the plane assigned to the flight. Wi-Fi, seatback screens or wireless entertainment.
Included through status or a credit card The benefit is provided by a loyalty program, bank or card issuer. Lounge access or extra baggage.
Free on request The passenger must request the service before travel or while onboard. Wheelchair assistance, a bassinet or a special meal.

Do not assume that an airline’s cheapest advertised fare includes every normal service. Airlines increasingly sell Basic, Lite or unbundled fares that remove meals, checked baggage, seat selection or other benefits.

Are Meals Free on Indian Flights?

Meals are not free on every flight within India. The answer depends mainly on whether you are flying with a full-service airline or a low-cost carrier.

Air India

Air India meals

Air India generally provides complimentary refreshments or meals on Air India-operated flights. However, its lowest Basic Fare may not include a complimentary meal, and food may instead be available for purchase where offered.

The type of service can depend on:

  • Flight duration
  • Departure time
  • Domestic or international route
  • Economy, Premium Economy, Business or First Class
  • Basic, Value, Classic or Flex fare conditions
  • Aircraft and catering availability

Passengers requiring vegetarian, religious, medical or child meals should check whether a special meal can be requested in advance.

IndiGo meals

Standard IndiGo domestic fares normally do not include an unrestricted free meal. Travelers can pre-book food through 6E Eats or purchase available items onboard.

There are important exceptions. Certain longer international services and specific fare products may include a meal. IndiGo’s A321XLR services, for example, advertise complimentary meals and beverages in eligible Economy and IndiGoStretch cabins.

Akasa Air and SpiceJet meals

Food on most low-cost services is generally purchased separately or included through a bundled fare. Pre-booking can provide more choice and may cost less than buying onboard.

Check the confirmation: Look for wording such as “meal included,” “complimentary meal,” “buy on board,” “pre-book meal” or “no meal.” Do not assume that a longer flight automatically includes food.

Are Water and Drinks Free on Indian Flights?

Passengers can normally request drinking water during a flight. However, free drinking water does not necessarily mean that the airline will provide an unopened bottle of a particular size or brand.

The airline may provide:

  • Water in a cup
  • A small bottle with an included meal
  • Tea or coffee with the meal service
  • Complimentary non-alcoholic drinks on certain international services

The airline may charge separately for:

  • Bottled water sold through an onboard menu
  • Soft drinks on a low-cost flight
  • Premium juices or specialty drinks
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Extra drinks outside an included meal service

Security reminder: You may usually carry an empty reusable bottle through airport security and fill it after screening where a drinking-water station is available.

Do Indian Airlines Provide Free Wi-Fi?

In-flight Wi-Fi remains limited in India and is not available on every domestic aircraft.

Air India introduced onboard Wi-Fi on selected Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321neo aircraft. The airline has continued expanding the connected fleet, but the service is not available on every Air India flight.

Even when a route frequently uses a Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft, last-minute aircraft substitutions can remove the service.

Connection Type Internet Access? What It Means
Onboard Wi-Fi internet Yes Can allow messaging, browsing or other internet activity depending on the plan.
Wireless entertainment network No Connects your device to movies stored on the aircraft, not the public internet.
Airport Wi-Fi Only inside the terminal Stops working after the aircraft leaves the airport network.

Do not confuse wireless entertainment with internet Wi-Fi. Your phone may connect to an aircraft network for movies while email, websites and messaging remain unavailable.

See the current guide: Wi-Fi on India Domestic Flights.

For terminal connections, read Wi-Fi at Indian Airports.

Is In-Flight Entertainment Free?

When an airline provides built-in or wireless in-flight entertainment, access to the basic movie and television library is usually included. The service may be delivered through:

  • A personal seatback screen
  • An overhead cabin screen
  • A wireless network connected to your phone, tablet or laptop
  • An airline entertainment app

Air India provides seatback entertainment on many wide-body aircraft and wireless Vista Stream entertainment on selected aircraft. Content varies according to the aircraft and route.

Some newer IndiGo long-haul services provide entertainment streamed to passengers’ personal devices. Most regular IndiGo domestic aircraft do not have individual seatback television screens.

Before boarding: Charge your device, bring a power bank in your cabin bag, install the required airline app and download your own backup entertainment.

Are Headphones and Earbuds Free on Airlines?

Do not assume that the airline will provide headphones merely because entertainment is available.

Headphones or earbuds are more likely to be supplied when:

  • The aircraft has individual seatback screens
  • The flight is a long-haul international service
  • The passenger is traveling in Premium Economy, Business or First Class
  • The headphones are necessary to use the airline’s installed entertainment system

They are less likely to be provided when:

  • Entertainment streams to your personal device
  • The flight is a short domestic service
  • The airline follows a low-cost model
  • The passenger is expected to use personal Bluetooth or wired earbuds

Carry your own headphones. Include a standard 3.5 mm wired pair or an airline adapter when flying on an aircraft with a seatback screen. Bluetooth may not connect directly to every airline entertainment system.

This should be the first supporting post added to the cluster:

Do Airlines Still Give Free Headphones or Earbuds?

Is Checked Baggage Free on Indian Airlines?

Checked baggage may be included in the ticket, but it is not automatically included with every fare or route.

The allowance can depend on:

  • Airline
  • Domestic or international route
  • Fare family
  • Cabin class
  • Weight or piece-based baggage system
  • Loyalty-program status
  • Codeshare operating airline

A fare may include cabin baggage but no checked bag. Another fare on the same flight may include 15 kg, 20 kg, 25 kg or one or more checked pieces.

“Free baggage” is a limit, not unlimited baggage. Excess weight, extra pieces, oversized bags and special equipment may still attract charges.

Always check the baggage allowance displayed on the final ticket rather than relying on a general airline advertisement.

Is Seat Selection Free?

There is a difference between receiving a seat and selecting a particular seat.

Seat Service May Be Free? Explanation
Airline assigns any available seat Often The system selects the seat during check-in.
Choosing a standard seat Fare-dependent May be included with Flex or bundled fares.
Window or aisle seat Not guaranteed The airline may charge based on demand and location.
Extra-legroom seat Usually paid Often sold as an upgrade or add-on.
Seat required for safety or disability Special rules may apply Contact the airline’s accessibility team before travel.

Skipping paid seat selection does not mean the passenger must stand or travel without a seat. The airline assigns a seat, but family members may not receive their preferred arrangement unless the fare or current rules provide it.

Is Wheelchair Assistance Free at Indian Airports?

Passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility should be able to request appropriate assistance. Airlines may ask the passenger to explain whether assistance is needed:

  • From the terminal entrance to check-in
  • Through security and immigration
  • To the aircraft steps
  • To the aircraft door
  • To the passenger’s seat
  • During a connection
  • From the aircraft to baggage claim or terminal exit

Request assistance at least 48 hours before departure whenever possible. This gives the airline and airport time to arrange the correct wheelchair category and trained staff.

Air India states that wheelchair use is available free to passengers requiring disability or reduced-mobility assistance. Policies may distinguish a genuine accessibility need from an able-bodied passenger requesting a wheelchair merely for convenience or faster movement through the terminal.

Do not request a wheelchair only to obtain priority boarding or skip a queue. Misuse can reduce availability for passengers who genuinely cannot walk long distances, climb stairs or reach the aircraft independently.

For airline-specific details, read IndiGo Wheelchair Assistance: Request, Charges and Rules.

For the broader airport process, see Wheelchair Assistance at India Airports.

Is Assistance for Senior Passengers Free?

Senior citizens do not automatically receive every special service free merely because of age. The available help depends on the passenger’s mobility needs and the airline or airport service requested.

A senior traveler may be able to receive:

  • Wheelchair assistance when mobility is limited
  • Help reaching the boarding gate
  • Priority boarding where operationally available
  • Assistance during a flight connection
  • Support for visual, hearing or other disabilities

Paid meet-and-assist, porter, fast-track or escort services are different from disability assistance. These premium services may involve a separate charge.

Read Air Travel Assistance for Seniors in India.

Free Airline Services for Infants and Children

Families may receive additional allowances, but the rules differ significantly by airline.

Infant bassinets

Air India provides infant bassinets free of charge on flights and aircraft where they are available. Bassinets are limited and must be requested in advance.

A bassinet request is not a guaranteed reservation until confirmed. Weight, height and age limits may apply.

Strollers, carrycots and car seats

Air India permits one collapsible stroller, carrycot or infant car seat for an infant under its baggage policy. Other airlines may allow a stroller or pram, but the item may need to be checked at the counter or aircraft door.

Infant baggage

Some airlines provide an additional infant baggage allowance even when the infant does not occupy a separate seat. The allowance varies by airline and route.

Baby food and formula

Reasonable quantities of baby food, milk and feeding supplies may be permitted in cabin baggage. Airport security may inspect liquids separately.

Reserve early: Bassinets, suitable bulkhead seats and onboard infant capacity are limited. Contact the airline before choosing a flight when a bassinet is essential.

Medical and Assistive Equipment

Wheelchairs, mobility aids and certain assistive devices may be transported outside the passenger’s normal baggage allowance when required because of a disability.

Air India states that passengers can carry assistive devices free of charge as additional baggage, subject to aircraft limitations and applicable DGCA requirements.

Equipment may still require advance approval when it includes:

  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Spillable or non-spillable batteries
  • Portable oxygen concentrators
  • CPAP machines
  • Large powered wheelchairs
  • Medical oxygen
  • Needles, syringes or injectable medication

Passengers may need a medical information form, doctor’s certificate or airline medical clearance.

Free carriage does not remove safety restrictions. Contact the airline before departure and provide the equipment’s make, model, dimensions, weight and battery specifications.

Are Blankets and Pillows Free on Indian Flights?

Blankets and pillows are more common on long-haul international flights than on short domestic flights.

They may be included for:

  • Business and First Class passengers
  • Premium Economy on selected international routes
  • Long overnight services
  • Specific long-haul economy flights

They may be unavailable or sold separately on:

  • Short domestic routes
  • Low-cost airlines
  • Flights without a long-haul comfort service
  • Fares where comfort accessories must be pre-booked

Bring a light jacket or shawl because cabin temperature can feel cool even when no blanket is supplied.

Are Airline Amenity Kits Free?

Amenity kits may include items such as:

  • Eye mask
  • Socks
  • Earplugs
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Lip balm
  • Hand lotion
  • Small personal-care products

They are generally associated with international Business Class, First Class or selected Premium Economy services. Economy passengers should not expect an amenity kit on ordinary domestic flights.

Unlike reusable airline blankets or premium headphones, disposable personal-care items in an amenity kit are normally intended for the passenger to keep.

Is Airport Lounge Access Free in India?

Airport lounge access is rarely free for every passenger. It may be included when you have:

  • An eligible Business or First Class ticket
  • High-tier airline loyalty status
  • Star Alliance Gold or another alliance benefit
  • An eligible Indian credit or debit card
  • Priority Pass, LoungeKey or another lounge membership
  • A promotional airport-lounge offer

A “complimentary” credit-card visit may still have conditions, including:

  • Minimum spending during the previous quarter
  • A limited number of visits
  • A small card-verification charge
  • Domestic lounges only
  • Exclusion of guests or children
  • Temporary suspension when the lounge is full

Lounge access is an airport benefit, not always an airline benefit. A bank or card network may provide access even when the airline ticket itself includes no lounge privileges.

Can Airline Miles Give You a Free Flight?

Airline points or miles can be redeemed for an award ticket, but the flight may not be completely free.

The passenger may still pay:

  • Government taxes
  • Airport charges
  • Carrier-imposed fees
  • Convenience or booking fees
  • Change or cancellation charges
  • Baggage and seat-selection fees

Award-seat availability can also be limited, especially during holidays and peak travel periods.

Free Services During Delays and Cancellations

Meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation or transportation during a disruption are passenger-rights issues rather than ordinary complimentary perks.

What an airline must provide can depend on:

  • Length of the delay
  • Scheduled departure time
  • Whether the disruption is within the airline’s control
  • Whether the flight is cancelled
  • Whether the passenger accepts an alternative flight
  • Applicable DGCA rules

Do not assume that every delay automatically provides a free hotel. Weather, air-traffic restrictions, airport closures and other extraordinary circumstances may be treated differently.

During a disruption: Ask the airline to state in writing whether it will provide meals, accommodation, ground transportation, rebooking or a refund.

Airline Services That Usually Cost Extra

These services are commonly sold as add-ons, although they may be included in a higher fare:

  • Choosing a particular window or aisle seat
  • Extra-legroom seating
  • Priority check-in or boarding
  • Additional checked baggage
  • Oversized or overweight baggage
  • Meals on most low-cost domestic flights
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Premium airport meet-and-assist services
  • Porter services
  • Paid lounge entry
  • Fast-track security or immigration
  • Ticket changes and cancellations
  • Unaccompanied-minor service
  • Pet transportation
  • Sports equipment exceeding the included allowance

How to Check What Your Fare Includes

  1. Identify the operating airline. A ticket sold by Air India may include a segment operated by another airline.
  2. Open the fare comparison. Compare Basic, Value, Classic, Flex and other fare families.
  3. Check baggage separately. Review cabin baggage, checked baggage, pieces and weight.
  4. Look for the meal symbol. Confirm whether food is included, available for purchase or unavailable.
  5. Check the aircraft. Wi-Fi, television screens, power outlets and entertainment depend on the plane.
  6. Review seat-selection terms. An assigned seat and a chosen seat are not the same benefit.
  7. Add special assistance early. Request wheelchairs, bassinets and medical clearance before departure.
  8. Save screenshots. Keep proof of the fare benefits displayed when you booked.
  9. Recheck before travel. Aircraft, schedules and service offerings can change.

Best rule: Never choose between two airline tickets using the headline price alone. Compare the final cost after adding baggage, meals, seats and other services you actually need.
